Simple shoutbox that integrates with vBulletin
 

All it needs to do is take into account whether a user is registered. If so he can see and post shouts. Shouts get added to a database table and displayed where you want them with a simple template.

I know there's a shoutbox hack already but it's almost like a forum in itself.

I did, but I don't see why these hacks don't fit your requirements?

I think it's pretty clear I'm asking for a lighter alternative.

UTLamer - the existing shoutbox does everything you want it to do , and anything simpler wouldnt really work very well.. the existing ones are neat , look and work well, and run quearys very fast ... Have you even tried them ?

Instead of writing a new hack, wouldn't it be easier to strip what you don't need/want?

Bah - some people just want the world served up to them on a silver platter. If you don't like the shoutboxes out there write your own.

i disagree that a simpler one would not work well

that's basically what I was asking for (a stripped down version) before everyone decided to clutter up this thread
