Is there any way to disable the "miserable user" option for certain pages? I also have the "forms" mod installed, which I use as a contact us form to create a post in a mod section (avoids emails/etc). I would like miserable users to be able to use that form so I don't keep getting emailed.
Thanks -vissa |
Nope, there is no such facility.
|
Thank you Great Work!
|
I was wondering if I ever would need such an add on....
And sure thing, I did nfind a use for it... Thanks.... |
I have had some members that just have been asking to get banned and I am going this route on them instead.... I have been considering installing this for too long and it is now running on my site and I love it!
If it is this slow on Broadband... I would love to see a Dial Up user that just got put on my &*!$ list! |
i love this hack! thanx!!...*clicked install*
|
Thanks for the hack - really annoying browsing with this hack :)
I'm a little lost with Usergroups. Is it possible to let Moderators add the Usergroup of a user? If not it would be nice to have option that Moderators could add this Usergroup to a user. At list temporarily. Maybe also an IP-Address. Maybe I'll work on that myself. Edit: Sorry, I just read that it works if the Miserable User group is set to banable. Thanks! |
Excellent! This has come in handy on a couple of occasions...lol
|
The day has come for someone to hush up and this tool is just the thing for it. Easiest install I've ever seen!
|
best hack ever! no need to ban people lol just piss them off
|
ditto all of the kudos!
Glad I installed just in time as a few were getting waaaay out of control. :) I wonder if 80% on all options and 1000 second minimum is 'too much'? ;) Thank You! |
Wow - that is so amazing.. what an idea.. Great Post...
|
In the old dial-up BBS days...
Basically it amounts to that age old rule, "Absolute Power, etc... etc" Kinda like pulling an April Fools joke on someone and not being there to see the results. (Except if you like the feeling of power over others when they PM you to complain about your site.. you get the chance then to goof around) Personally, I have too many other things to do... Its just easier, quicker, and less of a hassle to just, BAN... move on! Did someone here really say they've Banned a user 50 times?.... unbelievable.. and they only let them back on long enough for others to get tired of "abusing" him? Perfect example of the "Absolute Power, etc.. etc" Nice example of how to code a modifcation though... (Not Installed) |
installed, and loving it!
|
I never knew just how much I wanted to sizzle their little fly wings off in the hot daylight sun . . . until you placed this small, unassuming but powerful magnifying glass in my hands. But wait - it has a slow burn, fan-forced oven as well, with rotisserie!
Instead of being at the mercy of insects, I am now Back in Control. Thanks for turning my forum admin duties back from digital to analogue, and my clients also salute you! And wasn't that a great idea about redirecting to a custom server overloaded page with the donation facility? . . . How twisted can this get? |
This is a dream hack. Thanks Paul. :)

Got a victim already lined up... thanks! *Clicks Install*

This hack is just the best!!! I run a Community Forum and when the political hecklers get out of control....this is the best solution! I had one heckler (which I had banned for repeated Terms of User violations) send a letter to Vbulletin to complain that I banned them! LOL
I only wish that user ids could be used for this. |
I searched this thread for "server" "load" and "resource" and didn't come up with anything that would give me an idea of how much load is put on the server when someone is in the miserable users group and are feeling the effects.
I know I can tune things down with the settings, but I need to figure out the settings that will inflict the most frustration without exceeding my cpu quota on my hosted site. Thanks for this great product, BTW. |
It has no extra effect on load, it's just serving up pages the same as any other connection. In fact it probably uses less resources as the pages mostly have less interaction with mysql.
|
Excellent. That's what I thought, but I had a bit of an "event" not long after I put a member into the miserable group. I suspected that it was not related to this hack and you've confirmed that. Thanks. (Now, I'm off to fight with my host's support group... :) )
|
Hi Paul, we have version 2.01. To update to the current 2.05 what would we have to do?
|
Download the zip, extract the xml file [to your pc] and then import it into vbulletin as a product (with overwrite set to yes).
|
OK thanks Paul! :)
|
Thank you Sata.....errr Paul for this hack.
I've been runnig vBulletin for the past 5 months and recently found out we have a member stalking another one. I didnt want to outright ban the person since that sometimes creates more problems than solving them. This is a great solution to annoy them to the point that they just leave. It was so simple to install I think my pet canary could install it. Thank you for this Hack!!! I'll report back and let you know what happens with the offending member. |
I just wanted to verify-
Under the IP addresses you want to use for miserable IP addresses, if you enter: 123.234.23 Does that mean it'll affect the range of 123.234.23.1 - 123.234.23.255? Just want to clarify.. thanks!! |
I know that's how the vBulletin IP banning works, so if Miserable Users accepts the shorter IP, then I would imagine that the range you wrote is correct.
|
Yes, as I recall, that should work.
|
hahahah this is funny but great :D
|
I am at a loss. I've installed, uninstalled, reinstalled, and re-read the instructions more times than I can count. It seems to have no effect whatsoever on my test account. What could I have possibly done wrong?

suggestions? Edit: If I change a users primary usergroup to my Miserable Users group, then it changes the amount of stored messages allowed (from 50 to 10). However, there is no other effect...no random server timeouts, no slow down, nothing. Setting the primary user group to "Registered User" and setting the secondary group to the Miserable Users group has no effect whatsoever, leaving stored messages allowed at 50. "Registered User" group settings DO allow for secondary usergroups. Edit #2: Also, Plugin System is Active, and this plugin is set to Active with the hook in global_start Hope this helps someone give me a clue.... |
Possibly you have a broken hack using the same hook as this, preventing it running. Try disabling all other users of global_start and see what happens.

installed for the ATS community

I'm reporting back to let you know that the hack worked. The offending member is gone, as a matter of fact I got a hate mail saying how crapy and slow my board was and to delete their account.
hehehehe I love it!!! I'm surprised there are others having a problem installing. I've got v3.5.x and Have other hacks as well and things went smooth. |
A question, more about groups than this hack I suppose...
I've installed the hack, set up a Miserable Users group, and set the group in the options>Miserable-User config. I can add the group as a secondary on their user details. I don't want them to catch on by suddenly not having access to somewhere they could see before, or vice-versa. If I set the new group to have no access to anything will that override their main group's access and tip them off? or if I give it access to everything will it let them do things I don't want them to do (albeit sloooowly!!! lol ). The default settings for the new group gave some access rights and denied others, so there's no clue which is safest!. If there's no way of doing this without effecting access rights, would it be possible to have a version where we can just add userid's rather than groupid's? Fun hack though :) Jim deakin |
Most people just create the group based on Group 2 (registered users). There has never been any permission problems reported doing this.
|
That's a little awkward, as we have a 'senior members' area which people who've been registered longer than 6 months, and have made more than 500 posts can read. New members/plain registered-users don't see it.
Looks like it needs multiple groups... Thanks for the quick answer anyway Jim Deakin |
How would basing it on the plain registered group affect your senoir members ? It would work just fine for both.
