Serial Killer 04-04-2006 05:23 PM

If I bought the pro version of the GeoCity database, could I just use that instead of the lite version?

Serial Killer 04-04-2006 08:59 PM

ReadOrDie. Follow...these...instructions.

See that little folder icon under the "download" on the right hand side of the screen? Click on it. Then click save. Then click desktop. This will save the zip to your desktop. Double click the downloaded folder. Extract to desktop. The "read me" txt will point you in the right direction.

Now to the hack. It's a nice idea. but it is rather pointless. Even the super-expensive version is only approx 75% accurate, so what's the point? I would rather allocate this hack's space on my vBulletin to something like FlashChat.

This hack is a gimmick.

*clicks install* hee hee

Phalynx 04-10-2006 07:47 AM

Its a gimmick, but it's a nice looking gimmick :D

BTW, are there plans to do a more detailed Map espacially for a single country, like Germany. Or continents like Europe/America?

Snatch 04-10-2006 10:59 AM

I deinstalled the old version and now I installed the new.

I uploaded all the Files but the Cron sayes:
Code:

World Map Plotter

Map Image Not Found.

These files are in the maps dir:
world.png
world_alpha.png
world_color.png
world_real.jpg

Plz help.

Hmmm...This is strange. Doesn't matter what i do in the options, it doesn't seem to affect how the hack operates. For example, I try to change the marker to a diamond, but it stays as a cross. And even the templates don't change!

Also, how do you prevent the map from expanding when you place the mouse over it?

Serial Killer 04-10-2006 09:21 PM

Doh...I forgot that it takes a few mins for the changes to take affect.

Nice hack. I'll be voting for this as hack of the month. It used to be v3 arcade, but not anymore :(

Andy R 04-12-2006 04:08 AM

I have purchased the full version of GeoIPCity from Maxmind for my ad targeting using phpadsnew. Can I run this off the full distrobution? They say there is better coverage, do you know if that is correct?

DementedMindz 04-12-2006 07:55 AM

no clue why people keep asking questions i dont think hes going to answer... he hasent answered a question since 25. Mar 2006, 22:40

user02934123123 04-12-2006 02:42 PM

Dear all,

Could anyone offer some assistance in decompressing this downloaded file as per step 5 in the hack instructions?

I've downloaded the GeoLiteCity.dat.gz file from http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity, and uploaded it to my server; no problems thus far. However, when attempting to decompress the .sz file from the SSH command line with tar -xvfz GeoLiteCity.dat.gz, I receive various tar errors.

For those of you who have had success with the file/install, how did you decompress the file? Am I using incorrect flags for the untarring?

With thanks in advance.

DementedMindz 04-12-2006 10:15 PM

i would just unzip it and upload it via ftp this way you dont get the errors...

Serial Killer 04-13-2006 06:19 PM

Now that the new Google map mod is out, i will be switching to that one. This hack is nice, but the Google one looks so much better!

ConqSoft 04-13-2006 06:23 PM

They serve two different purposes...

Serial Killer 04-13-2006 07:25 PM

I know. This hack displays the users automatically (and for the most part works pretty well), but the Google map allows users to place their own marker on the map and display their info.

Which do you prefer?

ConqSoft 04-13-2006 07:27 PM

I prefer this one, because if I had ~9000 members on the Googlemap, the system would puke. :)

Serial Killer 04-13-2006 07:31 PM

hee hee hee! Good point. The Google map looks nice though... :(

Do you have any problems with your frappr map. Is it resource intensive? Looks pretty good.

ConqSoft 04-13-2006 08:09 PM

The frapper map isn't hosted by me, and isn't used very heavily anyway, so I dunno.

Both. :)

Gordon219 04-15-2006 03:52 AM

Is it possible to have one for Invision? :)

phreebsd 04-15-2006 05:47 PM

dude this it totally a cool addon. I love it.
/me clicks install.

delds 04-15-2006 06:54 PM

Any way to have the option of providing a location fro a perticular user based on ip ? perhaps a small map beside the user name in each post with ip location (in text), making the small map clickable to open a bigger map with the persons location.

MrDiaz 04-17-2006 03:35 AM

very nice indeed, it would be nice if we could rollover the positions on the map.

*clicks install*

computer1 04-18-2006 07:31 AM

Bingo!!! I too am looking for this!!!

Let me start by saying this is a awesome hack :) I have read through all the posts and gone through all the "how do I unzip a file" and "how do I stop the auto resizing" questions :) I finally got to someone who is looking for the same thing I am.

Basically, is there a way to modify the "postbit", and maybe "memberlist" templates to have a link that tosses you to a map showing that particular user?? My forum is basically used for entertainment and it would be neat after having 2 weeks worth on conversations with members to click and see where they are in the world. The way it is set up now seems more like statistics, something the mods would use, not necessarily the members.

I love it though :D:D .... please help

DementedMindz 04-21-2006 04:40 PM

i dont think you will get it anytime soon his Last Activity : 31. Mar 2006...

Well that stinks :( This hack is so good, but it's right on the edge of being incredible!! I put it on my site and just as I predicted users said wow.... but what good is it besides just being a "cute trick".

It's good for admins, but makes no sense for users :(

If there was a way that in the "memberinfo" template it showed that particular user on the map it would be insane!!

i agree im going to remove mine... i dont see a point for it no more and once you have over like 2000 members the map looks like sh!t.... the dots are so close together and really you cant tell what is what... ashame he dont build on it but for now im going to remove mine...

Uhh, that's what it's supposed to do. It shows your membership world coverage. Nothing else. You aren't supposed to be able to see every little dot.

i think your brilliant... i know what its suppose to do... it just looks horrible when you get alot of members... plus for now having it installed for a bit now i truely dont see a point in it no more...

eirche 04-24-2006 06:50 AM

brilliant!! i just hope it's not resource intensive

hcmagix 04-24-2006 07:10 AM

German users need this hack only for germany! The beta hack that show members in a german map was adjusted by the coder :(

ab420 04-24-2006 02:38 PM

Anyone know why it only shows 3 of my 65 members?

rareclownfish 04-25-2006 06:53 PM

I just finish installing this hack, it looks good.
I just have a question, how to get the map one image size from the code it self and not mouse over like it is now.

PS nice hack btw

zylstra 04-26-2006 10:10 AM

rareclownfish,

Adjust map size to 1080 instead of the default 750 in the vbulletin options for the map.

zylstra 04-26-2006 10:23 AM

The mod is nice! Thanks.

Some cool upgrades to this mod may be sunlight shading. Another one is alt tags (with imagemap) for member name when the member's dot is moused over.

But perhaps a more easy mod to implement would be a city name next to the member's name on the whosonline page and the member's city in their profile.

How can I make a permanent 900?

zylstra 04-27-2006 08:19 PM

Resize the map that you decide to use (in your maps/ folder) with a local graphics app. Actually come to think of it this probably doesn't work. Can't help ya.

rareclownfish 04-27-2006 11:00 PM

ok thanks

Gujulvr 04-28-2006 02:29 AM

As long as members can opt-out that sounds good. Some people like/love their privacy and it should be honored, otherwise that's a good idea ;)

Bubble #5 05-05-2006 12:53 AM

What exactly does the "START OPTIONAL" section in the instructions do? It doesn't give any information...
