It is my opinion is no matter the age, there will still be use for a lot of (maybe not all) old mods. That can be proven by what I have found in 2 years of posts I have gone through and found plenty of either mods I put in or mods that gave me insight to do something similar.

Again, who out there is qualified to tell me what mods are good or not good for my sites? Not an attack, just a comment.

Now let's continue with this thread in what it was intended for, shall we? v3arcade discussions.

*Bold added to text in quoted matter by me.

Excuse me but that is what I thought I was doing. Just because the convo is con as opposed to pro for this hack does not mean it is not v3arcade related.

I think that the moderators here do not need any other qualification than to be able to make the assessment that a hack could damage a board or is useless. Other than that, the mods here can perform like any other mod by deleting spam, flame and other such corrective measures.

In the present case the v3 Arcade hack is just being kept around due to its past popularity, which has long fizzled out when the author shut off free access to games in an attempt to punish the whole for the sins of a few and when he no longer supports it. The fact that others have to support the hack only highlights this fact.

Is it appropriate to keep it around simply because it was once a good and popular hack? That is the 54 Million Dollar question here. The answer is easy: No. The rationale behind the answer not so easy but here goes: People spend close to $100 for a vbulletin lease and they will shell out almost $200 if they want to own one. The first thing they want to do for the most part is to attract members and to do this requires features. Photo galleries, arcades, RPGs and chat rooms. Of all of these, arcades are the most desired. I know...my members want arcades. The arcades get the most activity at my site and at some of my friends' sites. Where does one get an arcade? Here. Which one do they get? The one under the discussion. It's the one that I got. Now we have an arcade, we need games. The hack only comes with 3 or 4 games which members grow tired of and only come to arcade to see if newer games have been installed. Then it's back to here to see into getting more games. The official v3arcade link takes one to a page where we are told that because a few baddies made a mistake we all must do without.

Is it appropriate to keep it around simply because it was once a good and popular hack? That is the 54 Million Dollar question here. The answer is easy: Yes. Now, this is my opinion. They were made because they were thought to be useful. Maybe they are not "current" because it worked well before or everyone has them. Everyone, that is, that already owns vB. What about the next guy that buyus it? Is it fair to say that he cannot get a hack that was made because a few people's opinions are "it has outlived its usefullness"? I do not think so.

I respect your opinion as I have my own. If you took previous posts as an attack, it was not meant so. I just hope that vB.org does not remove hacks so the next guy that wants to buy vB has the opportunity to decide on his own what is good for his site or not.

Soon! I am entering games into a database now for people to be able to download. A post will come with the link soon. Until then, maybe someone has a FTP already set up. Until I secure my site, I cannot post the link.

RichieBoy67 04-14-2005 03:51 PM

I was thinking of doing that too but is it legal???

rjordan 04-14-2005 04:08 PM

I do not see why not. As long as games are not being distributed that owners do not want distributed, then it should not matter. What I will be doing is allowing the uploading of all games for v3 and ibPro whether they are on the banned list or not.

The banned games will be password protected. Those who want games on the banned list will have to get a login ID and password from the game author. I will not provide them. I have already spoken to a couple of the game authors of banned games and have so far not run into any resistance. This way, if they give you the ID and password, you can get a copy of the game that works with v3 or ibPro (or whatever other game system is made for vB). Only game authors I have spoken to will have authorized games on the site available for download.

The domain is there. I just need to get a good anti-leech in place to prevent unauthorized downloads.

RichieBoy67 04-14-2005 04:15 PM

That is a cool idea... I was just planning on maybe uploading my collection of over 400 games and letting premium members download them if they choose to.... This is more of just an idea for me right now and nothing I am really planning yet... I have to much other stuff going on...

I wish you luck!! :)

Thanks i would appreciate that...its a very popular feature in my forum...members love it.. It would be great to add popular games such as pool ..chess ..scramble...

Does anyone know of the link where u can install 400+ games? someone gave me a link...but its no longer working now :( ...

Pepsi Man 04-15-2005 04:27 AM

Hey, I've got an issue that seems more like it's a certain users' computer's fault than the arcade hack's, but I was wondering if someone might have any idea as to what it might be. I haven't heard of this from any other users, but this one particular member will click on the Arcade link and only get a blank page. Status bar on whichever explorer he uses says done, and that's all that ever shows up is just a blank white screen.

Any thoughts?

Marco van Herwaarden 04-15-2005 06:55 AM

If you have more then 1 style installed on your board, then let those users try using a Style that you know is working with the arcade.

It could be that the templates are not (correct) installed for the Style they are using.

Oblivion Knight 04-15-2005 07:55 AM

The last time that I spoke to John a couple of months back, he was planning on a new version of v3arcade.. Though a pro version has supposedly been in the pipeline since the first release, so I don't know where that stands. As for the suggestion of removing it from vbulletin.org or moving it to an "inactive hacks" forum, I simply laugh at those who suggested it.. :p

v3arcade is a supported mod, perhaps not by the author but there are coders out there that continue to release addons and fixes for it. With any Arcade system, unless done in full cooperation with game authors (such as pnflashgames.com) there is going to be issues with copyright laws and such. I even offered to start up such a site some time ago, but nobody was interested and it never went ahead - and I don't have the time to spare anymore.

I'm sure people want something for nothing these days.. There are nearly 1,000 games available and people still want more? Just how much bandwidth do you want to eat up? ;)

@khaleel

Think i read a bit back in this thread that this is an error you can get if a deleted member is on the topscorer list. Please read back for a solution.

Nixpeiler 04-15-2005 09:44 AM

hi,

on search for games i found many dead links or must register and pay for traffic and so on
therefore i want my collection make available i hope that is not forbidden here
there is 590_v3arcade_games it can have everyone but do not link to other sites (hold back you fair)

completely or also individually

have fun

Oblivion Knight 04-15-2005 10:32 AM

No timescale was mentioned, but he did say that game installations would have tighter controls on them..

albibak 04-15-2005 10:40 AM

OK, thx for this information.
I will try to contact him, because I have some idea :)

Is there a quicker way of doing this rather than reading back to 223 pages :ermm:

Marco van Herwaarden 04-15-2005 11:34 AM

Yup just go back to page 225 :D

rjordan 04-15-2005 12:24 PM

I think this may be something different than the fix I posted, although in the same ballpark. I will see if I can find where this is coming from as well if noone else finds it first.

Original deleted user fix is here:

rjordan 04-15-2005 12:54 PM

Ok, let's try this. I have NOT tested this as I have not seen the problem first-hand.

In ./includes/cron/arcadeupdate.php:

Find:
PHP Code:

 $DB_site->query("UPDATE " TABLE_PREFIX "games SET highscorerid=$value[userid],highscore=$value[score] WHERE shortname='$key'");

REPLACE with:
PHP Code:

 if ($value[userid]!="") {
$DB_site->query("UPDATE " TABLE_PREFIX "games SET highscorerid=$value[userid],highscore=$value[score] WHERE shortname='$key'");

I hope this works for you. Let me know as I am curious now on your issue.

rjordan 04-15-2005 02:11 PM

BTW: Sorry for the post edits!

I got

Take out the duplicate ")". I have corrected original post.

RichieBoy67 04-15-2005 07:16 PM

Isn't there a hack to get all the games in alphabetical order???

albibak 04-15-2005 07:46 PM

Search in the arcade.php :

Code:

$result_allgames = $DB_site->query("
                SELECT * FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "games
        ");

Replace by :
Code:

$result_allgames = $DB_site->query("
                SELECT * FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "games ORDER BY games.shortname
        ");

And find :
Code:

$whereclause AND $sessionclause ORDER BY gamesessions.gamename DESC
Replace by :
Code:

$whereclause AND $sessionclause ORDER BY gamesessions.gamename ASC

Thanks. It does appear to be a style issue. Why I gave the user credit for having tried both styles himself and didn't check that out myself I can't even say. :o

lowcarbscoop 04-15-2005 08:38 PM

I just read through all the posts and can't see an answer. I installed arcade under one style and it ran great. I added another style to the board, and re-ran the arcade install to make the changes to the style. The games play under both styles, but if you get a hi score while using the new style, it does not record hi scores.

Does anyone have any suggestions? For now I am having the users that want to attempt hi scores use the old style, but I want to get rid of that style!

Thanks in advance.

RichieBoy67 04-15-2005 08:40 PM

Thanks albiback!!!

I have
PHP Code:

 // Selects all games from the database

$result_allgames $DB_site->query("
                SELECT * FROM "
TABLE_PREFIX "games $searchclause ORDER BY gameid DESC
        "
);

Should I replace this instead?? Forget it...... that worked... Thanks!!

Another problem I am having is that I cannot find the search addon to search arcade games..... Is this hack gone now???

albibak 04-15-2005 09:06 PM

This hack is in the original hack.
On your forum, when you go in the navbar, link search, you can see search module for arcade's games ;)

jonnerd154 04-15-2005 09:10 PM

Does anyone know if "Classic Frogger" has any copyright problems?

RichieBoy67 04-15-2005 09:16 PM

It is not in my navbar because I have a skin... It is a little different and I don't remember how I had it working before....

PHP Code:

<td class="vbmenu_option"><a href="search.php?$session[sessionurl]accesskey="4">$vbphrase[advanced_search]</a></td

That is part of my search in my navbar...

The instructions are...

PHP Code:

Find:
___________________________________________________________________________________________

<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php?$session[sessionurl]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Below thisadd:
___________________________________________________________________________________________

<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="arcade.php?$session[sessionurl]">Arcade</a></td>

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Never mind.... I got it... Thanks

Thanks

Yes I would like to know that aswell.

RichieBoy67 04-17-2005 12:52 AM

Yes, I am using 3.07. The only problems I am haiving are caused from my skin....

My search is not working but I think it is because of my navbar. Everything else works fine...
