Thanks ...

Could have been worse, as you could have been using Latin like the old days for prescriptions ... ;)

That's great! How have you found activity/ posting rates to be with this installed?

FuzionIT 06-27-2007 12:21 PM

Installed :-) Great mod thanks but I'm having problems changing the registration message. I'm using 3.5.4. I get an error message when I try to change using the LGV system so I've changed it in phrases. The message still hasn't changed though. Any ideas?
www.equineonline.net/horseforum

BTW if you look at the viewing system, the message has changed next to where it says Register Take-Over Message Count and Register Block Page Count. It's not actually showing on the forum though.

Ted S 06-27-2007 05:08 PM

This hack is not supported in the 3.5.x version.

Ok. A previous comment was 'The plugin will work in 3.5+'. Does not supported mean it won't work or does it mean no help is provided? I will be keeping the mod as everything appears to work apart from being able to change the registration message. If anyone can point me in the right direction to do that I would be grateful.

Ted S 06-28-2007 01:10 AM

It should work fine (and is running on several 3.5 sites) but as I don't run or use 3.5, I can't offer support for that version.

That said, if you change the right phrase it should appear on your site. Be sure to check your translations and any other languages you may have installed.

Lifesupporters 07-20-2007 09:10 PM

This is a truly great mod Ted, nice work!

I just finished installing it at Lifesupporters.com and the one thing that I truly like about this mod so far is I no longer have the need for custom usergroup permissions for unregistered and users awaiting e-mail in some of my forum categories.

Previously, there were forums that I just didn't want guests to have deep access to simply because they are either off topic given the sites main focus or are complimentary in nature but still do not fully mesh with the site purpose. Now that guests have limited browsing capability, I no longer have to privatize or hide forums and configure the usergroups specially.

I'm keeping an eye on who's online and so far the only user that was blocked was me in Opera as a non-logged in member. Yahoo Slurp, Adsense and Google are all online currently and not one of them is experiencing issues (not that I expected any as I've already read and understood the various responses to spiders and cookie usage).

The only comment I would make is the install file makes reference to this:

Quote:

This plugin does a basic check to identify bots (Google, Yahoo and MSN) and will allow them unrestricted access; however, you may want to consider installing the Bots as Members plugin if you are concerned about other bots. This plugin does not apply to the vBulletin archive and will not restrict views to that portion of your site.
...I read over that entire topic and as great as it sounds, I'd never install it personally given the negative nature of that entire thread. It simply leaves too big of a question mark as to whether or not using it may or may not be considered cloaking which is why I shied away from it all together.

Lastly, this is another minor issue but I did notice earlier in this thread, one user commented on your update line (the first phrase on your install.html file):

Quote:

This article and its associated code was updated on October 7th, 2006
IMHO, it may not be a bad idea to either update this line or simply re-direct it to this forum topic so all users can see the changelog in the very first post. I only make mention of it as it can cause some confusion, at least for tards like me.

BTW, if you do happen to visit my site, please don't slag me for it's appearance so far. This site is over 3 years old but only 3 months old on Joomla/vB so it's still very much in re-build mode.

Thanks again for this great mod!

Lifesupporters 07-20-2007 09:12 PM

...I also thought I'd add for a mod that is apparently Not Supported, you seem to do a fine job supporting it here on the forums!

Ted S 07-21-2007 05:02 AM

I assume you're talking about the Limited Guest Viewing mod rather than the Welcome Header adodn this thrad is about... but not a big deal.

I wrote to be blunt and scare people enough to think about it. The LGV hack may have an impact on a forum as bots develop to use cookies. Right now I don't see issues but I'm trying to avoid having people point at me and say "why didn't you explain it". I'd rather someone not use the hack because they don't like it than use it but not understand it.

Thanks for the feedback.

SeanE 07-30-2007 02:11 AM

Just got the word on the new vB version - is this product ready to go to 3.68?

Thanks,
-Sean

Ted S 07-30-2007 03:16 AM

It's a minor release so yes, shouldn't be an issue.

flindersredclaw 07-31-2007 05:17 AM

Bloody good job Ted. I have been using this for ages. I did switch it off for a while and my registration went way down. Just installed on clean 3.6.8 (fingers crossed)

thanks mate

I'm not sure what you mean? If you download the latest version, you get the latest version with any and all changes since any other version.

As for bots, that's explained in the main post and throughout the thread.

Chachacha 07-31-2007 03:27 PM

Installed. Thanks.

This hack isn't intended to block the viewing of threads (0). If you want that setting use your user group permissions, not this addon. If you set it to 1 it's the same as setting it to 99999, bots don't use cookies (at least not yet).

I would never recommend blocking your visitors from reading their first thread... People visiting a site expect to see the content they came looking for, denying it to them tends to scare them off. Only in the case of reputable brands (i.e. major newspapers) or very high-demand sites are able to do this with success and even then they tend to have tremendous bounce rates.

Will some people register to read their first thread? Of course. But most won't because they've had no chance to see what their missing out on.

This addon is not designed to truly block users. If you want to do that you should use your usergroup permissions and find an addon to treat bots as registered members or something else that lets them view content.

MrNase 08-13-2007 09:09 PM

What are your experiences? Did it really help you to get guests to register? :)

i just try it in test forum

register stats must be increase with block set to 0 , the problem is this will block search engine google too or not if block set to 0

the success forum like this is forums.offtopic.com , guest cant read the thread so they must be register to read, but search engine google cant crawl it too http://www.google.com/search?q=site%...s.offtopic.com

imagine how if google can crawl thread in that forum too

offtopic.com is the largest forums that using vbulletin in big-boards.com stats

Ted S 08-15-2007 02:13 PM

Just because another site is able to block guests entirely doesn't mean you'll find success doing the same. Big Boards have a different dynamic than smaller sites, mainly in their appeal and viral notoriety. And of course, every niche is different.

Blocking guests from viewing anything is a hard sell.

basketmen 08-15-2007 10:05 PM

ok i just need this answer, last question :)

it is ok for search engine google if i set 2 to block thread?

I can only tell you how the hack works. Determining if that meets your SEO needs is entirely up to you.

markdekwant 08-17-2007 01:29 PM

Nice one dude :O

legionofangels 08-28-2007 04:08 PM

Definitely interested in using this accompanied with your other hack.

My question is, is it going to ask me to register if I'm viewing the forums while I'm not logged in?

Because sometimes I like to look around without logging in. Sorry if this has already been answered.

theFAILURE 08-28-2007 04:17 PM

Yes it will. Just clear your cookies and then view more pages :)

As that's the purpose of the hack, yes, that's exactly what it will do. :D

Please read the main post for an explination of how bots see the site.

BadgerDog 09-03-2007 10:19 AM

An associated question for use with this mod, if I may.... :)

Right now, I have most of my forums set so guests can view the threads in the forum, but not the content of an individual post.

If I wanted to use this mod from time to time to drive more interest, but not ON all of the time, is there an easier way for me to turn ON and OFF guest reading posts permissions, then going into each indvidual forum and dealing with permissions for guests (and awaiting validation), to be able to read posts using this mod?

Thanks

Regards,
Badger

Ted S 09-04-2007 04:31 AM

You could certainly write a simple SQL query to do this for you.

theFAILURE 09-04-2007 02:03 PM

I do not this works for Archives though, either way still great :)

Ted S 09-04-2007 02:05 PM

It's not intended to work in the archive as it is not meant to be a system to truly block people from viewing content. The goal is to encourage registrations without being overly invasive.
