Is this the system that Gamers Euphoria runs?

opus 08-24-2004 10:46 PM

has anyone looked at rottentomatoes.com's journal integration? I'm not sure if that journal is completely custom or what but it is very nice.

spence2 08-25-2004 06:30 AM

AH....a couple of rookies in the quest for a vb3 journal! You'll find that hack here. It' s a much appreciated "patched" version of an obsolete vB2 journal system that some are using while awaiting AN-net's shiny new vB3 journal system!

* spence2's got the steaks on the grill, sizzling!

Cant Wait, Ive been lurking aound this thread for like a month.

JamesFrost 08-26-2004 02:40 PM

a lot of talk, no actual product (Like most other journal hacks.... Reeva et al excepted from this) ;)

any rough idea of timescales?

Osterling 08-26-2004 04:04 PM

i don't want to be rude by any means...

but i keep getting deadlines that turn out false.. like i was told a little bit ago it would be done at the end of the weekend, and that was like two weeks ago. then last week, i was told that this week would be beta and at the end their would be a release.. and yet he doesnt seem to be able to make that deadline either..

i just have to wonder when some one says it will be done by the end of the weekend, and yet a few weeks later he is still working on it..

so to be honest.. i am wondering if this will ever be released..

Ghostsuit 08-26-2004 04:34 PM

I have to say my advice is go with the Reeva version until something better eventually get's released. I've given up waiting for people to release Journals hacks if they appear fine if they don't I've still got one working at the moment.

Porting the basics won't be that hard.

spence2 08-26-2004 06:20 PM

I think in all fairness, there ought to be some distinctions made here.

When Ryangel fell off the face of the earth, we were all stuck. Wonko the Sane ported it, only to have it banned from vB.org because Ryangel could not be found to grant permission. I pleaded the "nobody can find this guy" argument with Erwin to no avail.

So, I pm'd Wonko the Sane and he posted it on Kurafire's site. From there a lot of people worked very hard & were very generous to share their modifications to his hack. Oblivion Knight & Sabretoothe then posted their versions of this hack on vbhacks.us when Kurafire closed his board.

The distinction that I feel ought to be emphasized here is that yes, a lot other coders promised, hyped and posted about their fabulous plans ... brad.loo's could do the dishes and Kurafire's could walk the dog. Oh, and that fabulous chocolate flavored journal that won't melt in your hand mainly because you're never gonna get your hands on it. We beg. We plead. We suck up. We bow down. And along comes AN-net, and here is the distinction: AN-net is actually coding!

While I'm also frustrated and share your exasperation, I think AN-net deserves more respect for his efforts. He has kept us updated on his progress. He has furnished us with screenshots. He seems genuinely to be developing a journal system for this community ... and seems genuinely committed to share his work with all of us.

I certainly don't want to see AN-net discouraged by posts that seem to equate his efforts with those who for whatever reason are great at boasting and posting, but never quite get around to doing any coding.

PixelFx 08-26-2004 06:40 PM

I think for those are complaining they should just be pacient, since AN-net is releasing this for free. this looks like a great hack, but sometimes life or bread and butter work takes presidence over free stuff we maybe working on for the community.

An-net thanks for taking the time to work on this hack, It will be worth the wait.

but again... as i explained to him on aim.. i am understand it's free, and no one is payin him.. but to be constantly giving false dates on when it will be completed.. that isn't fair either

AN-net 08-26-2004 07:29 PM

i understand the frustration you guys feel but my life, work(not coding), clients, and school summer stuff is alot to do and i am trying my best to get this done and i am makign sure there are no bugs cause if i rushed(no offense to zachery or link) it would turn out like ushop did with tons and tons of errors. so i will be beta testing it and making sure it optimal for release.

patience is all i need from everyone;)

Osterling 08-26-2004 07:54 PM

then please don't toy with me.. and give me misleading information, and deadlines that are incorrect ;)

Reeve of shinra 08-26-2004 08:00 PM

I think Spence is on the mark... AN-Net has put alot of effort in to coding this and we can see that simply from the screen shots. I am sure AN-Net didnt even need to let people know that he would be working on it except that alot of people are very interested in this and others either werent able to do it due to time constraints or are simply not releasing the ones they've made.

Right now, there is a journal system on vbhacks.us which works and if a journal is that important to your community, then go with that until AN-Net is finished as it will provide the basics and then some. I can garuntee you that there will converters available shortly after as alot of us plan to migrate.

Romeos Tune 08-27-2004 01:38 AM

Personally, I'm surprised An-Net was so nice after reading all this mess. If you all are that impatient then learn how to code for yourselves or pay someone to do it. Until then you should keep nasty comments to yourself and be patient. Even if it did never happen it didn't cost you a penny so give him a break and let him take his time and get it right.....

Even with tradmarks there is a period of time where anyone can claim abandonment to it. Vb.org needs something similar otherwise after a few more years and version 4.0 it is going to get crazy.

An-net, thanks for all your work, I completely understand time constraints and the web.

Osterling 08-27-2004 07:14 AM

yet again.. no one seems to comment on my issue..

that fact he keeps providing me missleading/false information... or is that justified because he is doing this for free? i'm sorry.. but i am not upset at the time it is taking, all i am looking for is some upfront honesty, that he cannot seem to provide me..

which... leads me to beleive how much of the journal hack is really completed...

I didn't mean to cause offense, and I agree with Reeva that there is a difference here in that real code is being produced. Most of us here do not do this stuff full time, but as a hobby (I would guess).

All I'd like to have I suppose is a realistic estimate of when it is going to be ready, taking into account school, work, holidays, etc etc. If you can't give a reasonable estimate, then just let us know that also.

I'm continuing using the current journal hack at the moment, but there is a lot in it that I would tweak if I knew this hack was going to be months away. If it is going to be weeks away, then I'll wait and see how this version looks first.

Keep up the good work - I'm sure it is going to be worth the wait :D

Why would you be talking about creating a installtion file, unless you were close to being ready to release a beta version? And why would you talk about releasing it... if you were not right around the block done?

I think this is a joke... I would advise anyone who wants a journal hack to find a new route, because a LITTLE less then a month ago he was saying it would be done shortly, and today he is still saying that....

I have lost 100% hope in this being completed... I think it sucks, but I would be suprised if he came out BEFORE Christmas. I don't mean to whine, but he keeps saying shortly, I got to wonder how honest his updates are.. and yeah yeah, he sometimes post images.. but liek those couldn't be created..

Too much talk, and not even action I guess..

Reeve of shinra 08-30-2004 05:35 PM

so will be working on your own now? Let us know who it progresses.

heynurse 08-30-2004 06:13 PM

exasko,

You need to relax and stop bashing AN-net, you act as if you are owed something. It's ungrateful people like you that turn off coders who develop hacks. If you have so much time on your hands, stop your whining and learn to code yourself. Maybe you have unlimited time on your hands, but most of us don't, many of these hacks are created in the little free time coders have, they have jobs and lives, their priority is not to please you. Please stop using this thread to whine and bash people who are offering this community hacks, even if it takes longer than you want....

OK, I'm stepping down from my soapbox now. :)

i guess theres two lessons here people shouldn't make promises they can't keep
however the second is when u get something for free you should learn to be more patient as the person who gives something for free owes you nothing

AN-net 08-30-2004 08:25 PM

i know i gave dates that were not kept but you kept prying every week asking and asking so i gave date to keep you quiet cause i didnt need to be hassled when im trying to get it done. as of know when its done it done! this is something i have coded and if im a joke so are you, i dont need to be harrassed for being generous. I have coded almost 4,000 lines of code for this hack and you say i am a fake? if your so sure about i didnt do ++++ then you code 4,000 lines of php:P

Oh wait ill assume you cant code php at all, so i would sit and down be quiet.

Now excuse me, i just had to get that off my chest cause i dont enjoy being attacked especially when im being generous.

I apologize for dates not fulfilled but i am not a miracle worker nor a person without a life.

Also important little tid bit of news, i wont be including a report system in this version due to some flood bugs and i wont be doing the last edited by for this version either. sry to those wanting those 2 features but they definately will be in next version.

Thanks for your time and please be patient:)

I'm kinda glad you got upset..... I don't blame you one bit.... I think you should take steps to limit this to certain people.... lol.... What do you wanna bet that when you release this thing that the people complaining and griping will be amungst the first to install it?? lol Take your time and get it right man and thanks!

I must say it certainly looks good so far from the shots I have seen. I just HOPE my co-admin/owner also wants this as badly as I do? ;)

Might I make a suggestion to those hackers/coders who are being hounded for a date? This formula works WONDERS on my kids .... (after the whine of "why not now?" "Because I don't FEEL like doing it NOW because you asked me too much" banter)

Take the guesstimated time it will be done, add a month and times it by your age. ;) It pisses them off to NO end yet when they DO finally get it ... they are very happy and surprized!

Being a mom, and HAVING a life ... I know how deadlines can come and go without even seeing them approaching.

Thank you for your time AN-net for your time.

*ps* I am on pins and needles wanting to see this in action (not nessisarily on my own site, but any site) .... it looks amazing.

Osterling 08-31-2004 06:52 AM

You all want to say I am whinning because he hasn't released it, and like I've said so many times to him on AIM... I don't care if you take till Christmas to complete it... as long as I know when you give updates they are honest and he is not being honest.. that is why I am angry.

There have been many hacks I am waiting on, but instead of the coder making false statements they are up front.. and that's all I excpet from people and that isn't much IMO.

So everyone can think I am just whinning because he isn't moving fast, but like I've said so many times.. it's the fact I feel he is not being honest.

blueuniverse 08-31-2004 08:22 AM

exasko, I think we all might like it if you just kept quiet. So he said something and couldn't keep to it. That just means he didn't predict that something was going to happen which maybe kept him back, as AN-Net tried his hardest to solve the problem.

PHP is a very complicated language especially when you are using it to an extent and AN-Net has been very helpful while he made it, showing us what is done and what he is planning to do.

Also in your quote you are quoting the word shortly, and really shortly is a word that is open to interpretation. AN-NET would've been working very hard on it for a long time, and maybe shortly is like a month to him. Even if that isn't the case, he's doing it for free so get off his case and leave him alone to get it finished.

Maybe if you left him alone, then it might happen quicker?

I would rather wait for a good copy that has been thoroughly tested than get a buggy one that will casue me to upgrade multiple times.

Thanks for all your effort man!!

actually it has been thoroughly tested, there are almost no bugs at all:) this public beta is to weed all the rest of them out;)
