adding plugins are confusing.

Zoints 10-03-2008 04:07 AM

The Zoints team is happy to announce that Zoints Local is no longer in Beta development and has reached Gold status!

We know it has taken some time, and we thank you for your patience, especially the forum owners who have been testing and submitting bugs to us throughout the entire 2.0 development process.

This release (marked 2.0.0.5) includes bug fixes and additionally some small improvements with the editor.

Information on how to install or upgrade are available in the zip package.

soundbarrierpro 10-03-2008 02:21 PM

Hi guys, I already have all my stuff laid out and everything is working great. Is it necessary for me to upgrade? Also what are the "editor" changes?

Thanks

It is recommended you upgrade as this release fixes several bugs within Zoints providing better stability and user experience.

soundbarrierpro 10-03-2008 05:22 PM

Will it change anything I've already done? My members and what they've done?

Zoints 10-03-2008 05:38 PM

Upgrading should not overwrite the changes your users have made to their profiles :)

This looks like it may be an OK mod, aside from a lot of the errors people are getting, but I have 2 qustions:

1) What exactly is with the /z/ directory? I like to keep my urls and directories nice and neat, so am I forced to have that /z/?

2) What exactly is involved between me and zoints.com? I know I have to register there for a key, but what does it do with my forum and/or members? I saw someone mention somehting about "giving" their members to zoints?

I just saw another error very similar to this reported. Are you, by any chance, running a server with Windows in ISAPI mode?

You are required to maintain a couple of branding elements, including the /z/ directory and the "social networking by Zoints" branding at the bottom of the profile pages.

As far as your second question, no you are not "giving your members to Zoints". The only person on your site who would need to have an account at zoints.com is you yourself. If any of your members do register at Zoints, there is a profile linking option that they can enable, but again, it is not necessary for any of your users to be registered on zoints.com in order to use the Zoints Local profile system.

MindTrix 10-07-2008 06:10 AM

Two quick questions,

1) Do you have to use the Zoints styled profile page, or can you chose to leave it as the normal vbulletin one?

2) If people use the built in blog feature, Do their blogs show up in the New Posts section? We find this useful for having peoples blogs noticed more rather than not knowing they are even there.

3) Can people comment on other peoples blogs?

I can't count so good, but I think that's three :)

If you install the Zoints Profile system, obviously the Zoints Profile pages are going to be there for your users. You do have options to run the vB profile system side by side, though we find this tends to confuse users and lead to some of them using one system and some using the other, which isn't really a great way to build the social networking aspect of your community.

New blog entries, as well as recently updated profiles, tag clouds and other useful updates are all viewable on the Community Central page to hep drive traffic back to the blogs and profiles.

And yes, of course people can comment on other peoples blogs :)

GrendelKhan{TSU 10-07-2008 08:38 AM

wow.

good to see zoints still kickin. I was all over local until vbull did their own stuff and zoints seemed to die for a bit with the takeover.

that said, i may consider zoints again considering, I'm still very interested in this as I loved the ajax drag-drop and I did lose a ton of backlinks (and GoogPR) when switched back to vbull. :(

So questions/concerns:

Duplicate feature confusion... I agree that using zoints and profiles would be confusing... but it seems such a shame to not utilize existing vb features if moved to zoints local as well.

So:
  • Exactly how do Profile Albums and zoints photos interact and vbull social networking ? it says tighter integration of vbull social networking and albums but I still don't understand how you mean. Does zoint profiles block use vbull profile albums? my users have made TONS of albums...and no way I want to lose that.
  • my users have also created lots of vbull groups.... how can I integrate/utilize that in zoints local specifically?
  • Plans for vbphotopost_gallery integration? (kinda same issue as first one above)
  • plans for vblog integration down the road?
  • can import vbulleting tags?
  • iproArcade champ awards block?
Related Note:
In general I have issue with images on my forums.

Users currently can upload to threads as attachments, vbphotopost gallery (had this before albums came around), and vbull Albums (still struggling with how to deal with this). Now if I did zoints local, would I have be to be adding zoints photos albums to the confusion?

man I wish there was just one system that seemlessly integrated all.

ps. I have a big-board. So we need to be sure zoints is in it for the long haul and will maintain updates!

MindTrix 10-07-2008 04:09 PM

One other question! If you use the Zoints profile page instead of vBulletins default one will it move things over? For instance, will all of the profile comments that have been made, show up on the new Zoints profile page? Or will they just vanish? And things like the users albums aswell.

Thanks

MindTrix 10-07-2008 09:21 PM

I have the same error/problem during install as the person in this post

that seems to be a path's issue. make sure you set the paths correctly when installing.

No, Zoints has no knowledge of what vBulletin's profile contains really. The data won't "vanish", it just won't be visible because if you set user's to redirect to the Zoints as their default profile then no one will ever see their vBulletin Profiles. You can turn off the redirect at any time making the vBulletin profiles accessible to your users again. In the 3.7.x version users albums will appear in the albums block but are still completely managed through vBulletin.

MindTrix 10-08-2008 04:40 AM

Thanks for the feedback, i fixed the error not long after i posted, the path was right but i needed to change all of the \ to a / instead and it worked fine.

Thanks, checking this out today to see what its like :)

MindTrix 10-08-2008 08:11 AM

Installed this last night and have been testing it for the last 10 minutes and found a fair few bugs that stop me from using it.

If i create a blog and make my first post, It wont show up on the blog page until ohhh maybe 5 or so minutes later. Then if i go to my profile page and check my Recent Blog Entries it will not show that i have made any blogs. So if i change the settings of the Recent Blog Entries and tick the box to show titles only, It will then update and show the blog i had made. However if i go back into the settings again the box is unticked, so everytime i make a blog i need to tick this box to update!

Secondly, if i edit a blog entry, the edits do not show up anywhere, unless you actually enter the blog to read it, then the updated version will show.

If you try to link to a photo in your blog, they show up in the editor, but when viewing the actual blog itself, they do not show.

When creating a style to use in the profiles, theres an option to upload a picture. I can upload the picture ok, but then i cannot delete it. It will load a white page with '1' written in the corner. So therfor not letting me upload any more pictures because it says i already have one uploaded ( Which i now cannot delete ) and this goes for every single style the user makes, So the same picture shows in every style and cannot be deleted.

That's it so far, but its putting me off using this now as most is not working properly.

Zoints 10-08-2008 02:37 PM

MindTrix, is your Windows server running in ISAPI or CGI mode?

None of the content uploaded/created by your users is overwritten by Zoints. The 'My Albums' block links to the users vBulletin album(s).

Quote:

There is integration of the vB groups, both on the Community Central page and with the
My Social Groups block.

Quote:

Probably not. We've put a lot of blood sweat and tears into our own blog system; it's not too likely that we'd want to replace it with the vB one.

Quote:

can import vbulleting tags?
This is a lot more likely. Zoints Tags is on the roster for things to look at now that 2.0 is gold, and importing tags from vB is definitely one of the more common user requests for this plugin.

These sound like something you might want to look into the Custom Block Creation documentation on:
http://dev.zoints.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

Remember, not only does Zoints Local come with all the out of the box features we talk about in this thread, but you can create custom blocks that are basically mini-applications of their own that you can do, well, just about anything with.

Zoints Local for vB doesn't come with a photo album of it's own. Your users can continue to use the photo album solution of your/their choice.

Good Lord! This is fabulous!

Can I limit this to certain member groups? If so, please tell me how.

Zoints 10-08-2008 04:55 PM

While it has been disscussed in the past, integration with vB usergroups was not something we were able to add. Unless you hack it yourself, you can't limit use of the profile system to certain usergroups.

Your blog issue is actually part of the design. These blocks have been designed to cache the entries for recent blog entries block in order to make it highly scalable. You can edit the time the block takes to reload by editing it's administrative options in ZAdmin.

The editor issue I am unsure about. Please submit a support ticket regarding the issue. Same thing with the style issue.

jambo_1969 10-08-2008 05:06 PM

Installed, however inactive just now.

I've noticed some issues with Firefox 3 compared to viewing etc in IE6 - Profile Pics wont show.

I can upload a photo, however, it wont show in the profile. All permissions have been granted 777, but cant seem to get a pic to upload and show. IE6 shows a white box with an x in it, FF3 refuses to show anything except a text line.

I had the error when writing a comment, but have sorted that.

The only other issues I can see at the moment, are the style designs - every time I try to create a new one, I end up with a blank style.

On the face of it, awesome stuff, just the niggles are a bit frustrating.

Are you guys aware of any issues with Firefox ?

Can you give a definitive pointer towards the uploading of user pictures ?

Cheers
[edit] - also, in FF, if you move the Media Block to near the top centre, the drop down lists for the style lose focus behind the embedded video...

Understandable. perhaps then.... might you consider an import script? Obviously we don't want to run to different blogs. I'm ok with using zoint blogs... but I hate to say "too bad" to those with vb ones.

good to know. I think that will be invaluable for converting to zoints. zoint tag were a big SEO pull.

will do. hopefully there will be a custom block for this, esp given arcade is still the most popular add-on for vbull.

I assume same as above then? a custom block showing gallery pics will be pretty essential imo.

hmm.... a lot to consider.... to be honest, I real WANT to be able to justify zoints again. The PR value and extra features are great. but right now, I'm still trying to weigh the sacrifices as is (like tags, as of yet--non existent custom blocks) .

I'm keeping a very close wathc on this...

is there a way or recommend somehow to test this without full conversion?
thank you for the reply....

I checked my server settings and there is a section about php support, where it is php version 5.2.5 but there is a drop down box behind it that gives me different modes to chose from, at the moment it says Run as CGI application but i can change this from CGI to FastCGI and ISAPI application......Which one do i need it set as?

Sounds like you might need to do the template edits (found in TEMPLATE_CHANGES_MANUAL.txt in the download package) manually on that site.

Just the error message by itself without any details isn't really enough to troubleshoot with. Let's go ahead and have you submit a support ticket with server info and we can try to work through it with you :)

You're the first to report the issues you mentioned. What's your site address so we can actually take a look and see if it's something that's local to your site or if it's a more widespread issue?

Zoints Local is not compatible with Windows in ISAPI mode, so if you're in CGI, that's not the cause of the problem. Let's have you submit a support ticket so we can do some research and attempt to duplicate your issues :)
