man bots are signing up like crazy on my site and i have this installed. it started up all of a sudden. is anyone else experiencing this?

steadicamop 02-02-2008 07:28 AM

Do you still have the default 4 images enabled? If so check this post and add extra images, I've got up to 10 now andn don't seem to have any spam sign ups - I will admit I had one get through before I changed it.

Let me know how you get on.

BlackRabbit1971 02-11-2008 04:04 AM

I changed the image set completely as I have a themed board and not a single bot. I think someone must have gone through all the pics and found some way of letting the bot know which is which. My advice would be, you can keep 4 pics but change the sets.

The only thing that I have found is that when a users clicks on the wrong image and is sent to the message " I'm sorry, you have selected the wrong image, please go back and try again. " and then hits the back link it will give them new image choices to click, but the word underneath them does not match all the time. Any idea's to make sure that the "hint" word will match the images all the time?

Yes, I've noticed the same problem. It is possible with a larger array of photos that a user could accidentally click on the wrong image, get the error message, and then click on their browser's "Back" button to try again.

Clearly the image verification php script is being executed in this scenario, because a new image set is being selected and a new question is displayed.

A fix to reload the images would be greatly appreciated.

This mod is FANTASTIC! It has brought the onslaught of spambots signing up for our sites to a complete halt.

Most impressive!

Sothside40 03-02-2008 04:11 AM

works perfect, thanks.

karlm 04-07-2008 05:10 PM

Will you be updating this to work with vb3.7 series? (hoping so)

biglamb 05-01-2008 09:53 AM

Works with 3.6.10, but, yes there is a but...every once in awhile one on the images will not load and I get the vb_regsource, as I said this is not very often. Thanks for all the information in this thread. It has been very helpful.

the hack in spanish please

GlitterKill 05-13-2008 07:04 PM

Why would you use this in VB 3.7 when it is a stock feature that was added for the 3.7 release?

Yes, that's what I also like to know. Anyhow, as mentioned above this hack works fine with 3.7.0

Many thanks :)

Thanks Kirauni for info! ;)

This is not in v3.7 is it?

SecTa 05-22-2008 04:01 PM

I must say that this hack saved me and my mod-team a lot of time and nerves - after installing it there was not a single spam post on the forums!
After upgrading to vb 3.7 i thought that built-in Re-Captcha will be as effective, but recent spam attacks proved me wrong. Installed it again, many thanks steadicamop!

Philster 05-22-2008 10:53 PM

Hi everyone, do I need to remove/disable 'No-Spam 3.0' before I install this mod? Thanks.

Phil.

Exactly...... but the verification image folder is present

I have tried to install the mod on v3.7 but get nothing at all, all the required components are in place like GD libraries etc. , would love to see this work.

steadicamop 05-23-2008 04:52 PM

Sorry for the lack of support and input -- have been busy elsewhere and have let this slip.

I've noticed a few things - could anyone confirm if this is now a standard part of VBulletin 3.7.0? Just curious as no one has mentioned it to me....

Also if not and people are installing on 3.7 and if this works ok or not, I have seen a few which do and some which don't ... if there are any common issues on that I will do my best to resolve, although I'm still on 3.6.2!

AdrianH 05-23-2008 05:40 PM

This is NOT to be found anywhere in v3.7 , I wish it was.

I have tried to install on v3.7 but get either a blank page or an unchanged registration page, the mod does not appear.

I have the components you list as required so it should work as others have stated it works well in v3.7.

steadicamop 05-23-2008 08:09 PM

Without upgrading myself I'm a little helpless to make a 3.7 but I plan on upgrading next month, then I can look at holes as to where it's not working. Technically it should work as all it does it use a hook at the start of the regstration process, but I can imagine somewhere along the line it calls something has changed inbetween versions.

Bear with me, I will do my best to port this to 3.7

Jason

mikeylikesitz 05-23-2008 08:32 PM

that is great news,
i had it as well and lost it when upgraded to 3.7

Jason , having read this whole thread from the first post again I see I was installing incorrectly as the folder required to be uploaded is the last "verification" folder and NOT the whole set supplied.

I think the install has too many folders and the instructions are a bit ambiguous.

Having loaded up the correct folder I now get the mod prior to the registration page so it is an extra layer.

I do think it needs to have more images to choose from, say 8 instead of 4, I will see what this does to stop the latest bots as they are walking right by the captcha/ReCaptcha and Q+A systems.

steadicamop 05-24-2008 07:59 AM

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your feedback I will be working on an updated version for 3.7, which will include AdminCP options.

To increase the number of images in the meanwhile, instructions on how to are in this post -- https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost....&postcount=122

There is only really one folder that this mod uses, I just put it inside the images directory so it was tidy, it can be put anywhere but the code needs to be updated to reflect this.

installed on 3.7 and so far has stopped the spam i was getting so nice mod thanks

steadicamop 05-24-2008 08:17 AM

No errors whatsoever on 3.7? I might just go ahead and re-release it for 3.7 until I can upgrade myself and add new options.

That is what I did to increase the number of images but I am getting an error in that the questions/phrases are incomplete ,ie; click the image that is A ......... and the rest is missing.

(Reason for fault is now found........... editing wrong secion!)

AdrianH 05-24-2008 09:27 AM

Hi Jason, having re-read that post https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showp...&postcount=122 I have edited the style templates and can confirm that this is working perfectly in v3.7.:D

I now have 8 images and the phrases are displayed correctly.

Good luck with the next version!

steadicamop 05-24-2008 05:18 PM

Glad you got it going ... currently testing out on 3.7, I see it's working fine, now going to work on adding AdminCP options for number of images .... image directory - I can't think of any other items I could add ... suggestions welcomed!

Artes_Marciales 05-25-2008 06:45 AM

Great mod!
Thanks : )

I have one idea, most of user will use the default images you provide, and the only failure of this script is that image final size won't change. I can imagine bot will easily know "default" picture size, and click on the good one depending of the question !
One easy fix for this would be to randomly change the jpg output quality in GD from 70 to 100%, this way, each page reload would really display 'new pictures' to spam bots :)

anyway, it's a very cool mod, I can't wait 3.7 official version :D

tehblob 05-29-2008 03:01 AM

Your suggestion has been noted, I have another idea with this, to make different size images, that was that could also fool the bots ... just want to give as many possibilities as I can.

I'm away for a week now but will get the latest version going as soon as I can ... should also be backwards compatible I hope!

working fine on 3.7.0 for me ... somebody said it was stock in 3.7 series but no one has yet found it. seems to be working like a charm. like with my 3.6.8 board, it stopped the bots dead in their tracks and users have sucsefully registered without issue.

NeitherSparky 06-04-2008 01:53 AM

Yes this seems to be working on 3.7 for me, of course I have only been using it a day. ;) I did use my own images as I have a themed board...it isn't necessary to match the exact same number of images used by default is it? I could use more or fewer couldn't I?

I look forward to the updated version. :)

ngx 06-07-2008 03:33 AM

Hi Steadi. I just installed this about 30ish hours ago, and so far 5 bots have signed up. I either have some very persistent bots who just keep clicking until they strike it lucky, or they have found a way around it. *sigh*

Thanks anyway.

Have you extended the number of picture to 8 ?
