Freddie and his team may have developed vB, but I have also developed quite a few massive projects, including one fully based in PHP for NASA. Please do not be so quick to judge. He simply took it personally, which I did not intend.

An 80-character line limit is there for three primary reasons:
1. To prevent ridiculously long lines, such as those queries in vB2 (which are gone in vB3, thankfully)
2. To allow editing of the code at low resolutions or in a complex IDE such as Zend Studio with all the panels open.
3. To allow printing of the code such that two columns can be on each page.

All of the above make it much nicer to follow the 80-character standard for code reviews. Also IDEs have that gray line in the editor for a reason. :)

BTW, I do agree that 80 chars is a bit small (it actually makes the code more messy quite often) and 100 or 120 would be better, but a limit is necessary. Surely you can understand that and see my point.
