Just wanted to give a heads up to everyone. I'd recommend anyone planning on installing this hack does it immediately and puts a link to the archive on their main page (or a page that is frequently spidered by google) because... the google dance will be happening in the next 1-3 days. The "google dance" is when google updates all the links and adds new pages. So bottom line, if you get your archive up before the dance, then your archive pages will be in google NEXT dance (only 1 month) but if you miss this dance, then your archive pages might not be in google for 2 months.

I installed the hack today, at the moment I'm literally invaded by Inktomi's spider (50 instances on Who's Online). How could I get rid of the "Unknown Location: /archive/topic/1250.html" messages displayed by online.php?

LOL...I would love to do something like this, however, with 1.6 million posts on-line, it could become a server issue in directory storage. Meaning, number of files in one directory. Darn!

It doesn't actually create a file for each thread, it just seems like there are ;)

SkuZZy 12-30-2002 06:54 PM

yeah it doesn't actually create the files. However, your files would still be huge. I am working on releasing the ability to split pages in v3.0. IE: Only 250 threads would be displayed per page, because google only spiders the first 99kb of each page.

The downside to that version will be that URL.s will look like http://www.whatever.com/archive/topic.php/400.html instead of just "topic/400.html". But it still works ;)

Skuzzy & Xenon, thank you so very much for this hack.

Skuzzy, I remember reading somewhere that google doesn't like the slash + something else after a dynamic file extension... ie. slash after abc.php like "abc.php/abc.html"

As a matter of fact, that might be why v.3 new indexing system is not being pickedup by google now. Just thouhgt i'd let you know

Thanks again, this hack is awsome

Yeah, having .php in the URL affects how it's spidered I think. Once vb3 is released, i'll just use mod_rewrite to take the .php out of the vb3 archive, then I will strip the archive down and remove all the pointless javascript junk. Why waste bandwidth on an archive? ???

Do you mind telling me what the problem was you were having? Other people might be having the same problem. Or if you don't feel like posting it in public, PM it to me ;)
