Never been a fan of Internet Explorer and loathe the fact that I cannot use transparent PNGs on my site because 10% of my visitors use IE6 which has poor alpha transparency support.

Firefox (^_^)b

Upload as .PNG and rename as .GIF via FTP ;) u will keep ur transparencies

The problem with that is you have to matte a .gif to a specific background color. Therefore, if you display your .gif on background #C0C0C0 on one page, and background #000000 on another, you need two images to achieve an antialiased transparency look.

One specific vBulletin image I can think of is the online/offline indicator - which shows in postbit on one color but in profile view on another color.

The alpha transparency of PNG is what makes them attractive because it will antialias on any background color without matting. A .gif is either colored or transparent - there is no middle ground.

Chrome renders all of my sites just fine. However, I'm not using vBulletin, and I don't know the amount of tableless customization you have done, if any.

So I will need to come in here and say, your css must have already been in hell, my friend. Chrome shouldn't and wouldn't just blow it up for no reason. ;)

PS: If only 10% of your users are on IE6, I think you should feel a little more comfortable with not supporting it. Just explain that in order to view the site in full potential, they must either upgrade to IE7 (or 8 beta) or use a modern web browser. If you can get 1% of that 10% to switch, you've done a great job.

I realize the CSS may not have been perfect, but it worked just fine on every major browser out there - to include PS3 and PSP browsers. Just an annoyance and I didn't really have time to rework my CSS just because Google released a Beta browser.

Also, as my forum sees 7,000 visits a day, 10% means that 700 visitors a day would see ugly grey squares where a transparent PNG should be - that number is sufficient for me to address that as people rarely read notices. If a potential new visitor came in off Google/Yahoo and saw a terrible looking site, I doubt they would stick around enough long enough to read my "you need to upgrade" message.

Or you could upload a javascript file and add three lines to your headinclude so those 10% see PNGs properly.

Really no excuse to not use PNG over GIF these days for static images. Animated GIF is still popular but with animated PNG support in Firefox 3 by default, it will become more and more accepted as well. Hopefully in a few years, we can say goodbye to the GIF format altogether. It is outdated and a relic of 8-bit computing.

I sent Wayne a PM - if anyone else wishes to discuss my PNG/GIF philosophy please PM me; I did not intend to drag this thread off-topic with my remarks.
