This is a good hack but it will ruin (not ruin but disfigure) some boards. afterlab has a great forum, the best part is the store parts. It's that little spice that gives it that touch and makes people sign-up and post there. Now if every board had that, people would not have as many reasons to go there because it's "just another board." This is the pure and only reason why I will never post a link to my board. As soon as I post it, people will visit it maybe once or twice to get some ideas and then mass post in requests until my board too is "just another board."

I'm not trying to criticize anybody here, you're all doing what you want best for your board just as I do and will. I've seen the store hack few months ago and have had one installed on my board for a long time with different features. I know vBulletin is suppose to be about sharing hacks and everything but everybody wants their site to be unique and attract visitors because you provide them with something other sites don't. Don't you want that?

its hardly unique when at least 5 forums already have the hack installed... :D did you worry about Shinras board not being unique when you placed a store on your forum?? obviously not! :p

Well WE were the ones making it. That's fine.. If someone was to MAKE one of my features, I made myself, from my Forums.. I'd be fine with it. But when someone releases it and gives it out to 1000+ people, then it's a problem.

yep well originally its not your idea so I dont think you got a say in the matter, if shinra came here and wasnt happy it would be different!

I asked shinraonline (reeve and palmer) about releasing the store hack that i made. They both agreed and didn't have a problem with it. That's very cool from them since i also told them that i won't release my store hack if they didn't agreed.

Well, as I said. Everybody on this board what they see, if they like, they will take/make/steal or any other term you wish to use including me. There's a difference between 1 person taking it for their board and releasing it to 10,000 people that most want to put on their board. So a ratio between 4 people taking it or 6,000 people taking it. I'd say 4 isn't going to make much difference in the world of "lets have a unique website".

if Shinra say its ok.. and its there hack.. its ok

I think the uniqueness of our forums comes from our members.
People with a unique wit and sarcastic sense of humor that blends right in with the rest of them. The staff with thier idea's and laid back manner are also a plus.

I do think the hacks add a certain something to the place, but, my personal opinion is that its not the end all be all. If someone comes along after us and makes a similiar hack, then more power to them. Hopefully they will add something to it that will stir the creative juices allowing some else to make it better yet.

Besides, new idea's are what keeps the members comming back. Not hogging old ones. The store - great as it is, has had its time. Its not the nifty new toy it was a year ago.

And that's just my two cents. Mine, not nessarilly that of my co-admins.

That's a good point but at the start you need to offer them something unique so that they join because if your forum is brand new and it's got the same topic as a forum with 1,000 members, they are most likely to join the other board unless you give them something extremly unique that will make them want to stay but if you're ok with releasing this hack to everyone it's fine then since you were the original creator of the idea and i do respect lesane for asking you because if it was my site and somebody just released it without asking, i wouldn't be too happy.

i agree with reeve... my board is unique.. not because of hacks.. but because of the forums and just ideaS of how too have fun........

Commenting and bragging about everything (like in forum comments), and now complaining because the idea isn't unique anymore is pathetic.

Let me tell you something- 6 months ago when our site came up with a forum RPG, nobody here ever said anything about it. now it's not such a unique thing, and there are tons of sites that will have it soon.
Face it: on the net, nothing stays unique for long. Do what we did - suck it up, or keep quiet about it until it's released. otherwise you're crying wolf.

god, think about Jelsoft, when they see phpbb (which is an absolute ripoff). Just make yours better quality, and have one hell of a community, and people will come to your site.

I go to many forums, but if the community is crap, I don't care what nifty toys they have, I won't go there.

This is why UBB has such a strong community, because they do not go around bragging about stuff and not give it to the public. And to top it all off, you go and make promises to board owners and even talk about money just to dump the board owner and take all of his ideas and claim them for your own.

Yeah, I made it... but even then... the concept wasn't too new for us.
We had been running the "gil and store" since about 3 months after we started our board (and we're going on 20 months now) back on the UBB.

The concept only got noticed after I made the hack... and even then, people didn't care about it for over a month.

People can rip my ideas... *shrug* Fact is, I am the one who's known as the originator of this concept, and still to this day, people refer to "Shinra's Store"

I don't care if everyone and their pet munkey has a store hack now...

The recognition and reputation makes up for it.

The store was a unique concept... for a while. But it was never a draw... it was never an attracting feature.
No one came because we had it. It did help add some 'stick' to the forum... but it was never a selling point.

We started it because it was a fun idea. We built it up because it's a useful tool.
It encourages good posting. Good posts are rewarded with points.
Bad ones are rewarded with mocking and derision.

Make good posts, and you can have the perks of the forum... title, avatar... BB Code in your title... even renting your own forum for a month.

Anyone can use the idea. I encourage it, personally... it gets creativity and learning going.
I think it's good overall...

Especially because if everyone does it themselves... then everyone will have a unique store. Mine deals with forum options.
Afterlab's is for RPG items.

Both are stores... but very different.
