Example, if a non registered user subscribes to my forum's feed and they continue to browse until getting locked down. Will this non registered user still receive the feed. I'm thinking yes, but I am not 100% sure.

This does not impact RSS at all.

Installed an working for the most part... but in Chrome with 20 other tabs open in testing sometimes the "Please Register" message would go away and never come back no matter how many threads I clicked on... but it might very well be a Chrome issue... when I clear the cookies it works as expected again.

I only use it to show a please register message with an additional google adsense ad in it.

I also added another plugin so the message also shows on "forumdisplay" instead of just threads and posts.

Thanks for this.

Installed in 3.8.6 PL1, working fine! Thanks...

azn_romeo_4u 11-12-2010 05:30 PM

Is the 3.7 the same for the 3.8 becuase when I unzip only the 3.7 is in the zip folder.

azn_romeo_4u 11-12-2010 05:55 PM

This doesn't seem to work for me...installing the 3.7 version that was included in the file. Opening up 20 tabs, delete all cookies.

BirdOPrey5 11-20-2010 01:18 AM

OK there is definitely an issue... I thought this might have been a problem with cookies and Chrome but it happens in every browser I've tried (Chrome, IE, Firefox, Opera AND Safari)

When I go to the site as a guest after the 3 thread views (which I set) the "Please Register" message shows as expected... But after 5 to 10 more views the nag message goes away completely and never comes back unless I clear the cookies and start over again.

Obviously this kind of defeats the whole purpose. Curious if anyone else has had this issue- or has kept trying after seeing the message to see if it does eventually go away?

I'm running 3.8.6 PL1.

Simon Lloyd 11-20-2010 02:06 AM

Joe, do you have BOTH messages set to 3 threads?

BirdOPrey5 11-20-2010 03:28 AM

I have "Register Take-Over Message Count" set to 3. I have the "Register Block Page Count" set to 10 but also it's disabled... I don't block anyone just show the "nag" message (and an extra ad.)

BirdOPrey5 11-20-2010 03:36 AM

You know I think even though it was disabled the "Block Page Count" was still counting and when it reached 10 it turned off the whole system instead of just keeping the "nag" message on. I changed the value from 10 to 1000 and have tried it like 20 times and it's still working now.

Thanks... Wouldn't have thought to even try that.

Simon Lloyd 11-20-2010 08:03 PM

Glad thats sorted :)

Lynne says this is Cloaking if your website shows up different for the user than the bot. Can this get my website banned from Google? Also, I can't find the table with the db logging =/

Simon Lloyd 12-10-2011 05:54 AM

Did you read the mod description properly???

I used this mod for a long time whilst my site ranking rose, so in my experience NO!

As Simon said, you really should read the thread description first... but since no ever does...

Let's define cloaking: showing a bot one thing and a user something else in an attempt to trick the search engine.

Out of the box this mod does nothing of the sort [you can tweak things to get more aggressive, but that's your call, not the mods]. For several views everyone sees your website and then, depending on your settings, they get a message or block page. There's nothing unique about the bot's experience except that it's treated like a new visitor every time, nothing is cloaked.

Not much different than a website which personalizes the experience as you click around is it?

There's a few news sites that get pretty aggressive with this sort of approach, like the WSJ. Engines get through to the full story and users always have to login to see more than a preview. Still, they rank... Why? Because search engines know that a membership site isn't gaming them by letting them see what people who pay can see. Heck, there's been programs over the last few years to let bots login to sites. The more Google or Bing or anyone else can slurp up, the better informed they are.

Can this get your site banned from Google? Anything is possible and I don't work for Google to say otherwise. But I'm going to theorize that this mod has far lower risk than the endless backlinks and swaps everyone seems to want to try with their forums these days.

What do you mean you can't find it?

Do you not know what it's called?

Was it not created?

Is it not getting used?

Be specific and you save yourself a post and many hours of waiting.

Looks like you've enabled features without configuring their values. The addon should default around these but setting a value will fix it just the same.

Thanks Ted S.

Sorry Simon ;-)

If you use the database option, it queries the database. If you do not use the database option, it does not have to query it. A simple read to check an an insert/update to save. Nothing giant but certainly something to consider.

Cookies are computed with just a couple quick if/then statements using a previously loaded library and module call. Pretty light but every addon is adding something.
