now i am no vb brain.. matter of fact i suck.lol. but im pretty sure you can change those links so that it wont go back to there site but go to somewhere on your forum instead. :). check into it

Caddyman 09-30-2009 07:04 PM

I installed comet chat today on my Delaware site, it is great, a few tiny bugs i squashed with ease. yes you can customize the links and what not.

usergroup thing, only way i see that as a option is like someone mentioned to wrap the code added to the template with a conditional.

the install is real easy, under 5 minutes and done.

thumbs up

what were the bugs caddy? ive heard that it makes some peoples sites crash. I also heard that slot of people get blocked from work because of it too. What bugs have you seen?

Caddyman 10-01-2009 11:38 AM

sent you a pm back but it was just a error with the autolinker so far.

if something like ....this was typed the script would pick up the .... and link it resulting in a broken link

the fix is on their site, took 2 minutes to do, 1 file edit, and it's fixed.

RedHacker 10-04-2009 10:10 PM

This is worked but not show other languages.....

BucWiLd 10-05-2009 10:33 PM

i hear the beta is released for the newest version.. who is using it> and can share its features and how its working?

bada_bing 10-06-2009 01:17 PM

Please hurry with the new version... cant wait

Brother Malachi 11-05-2009 06:37 PM

Do you guys realize that this will require a ridiculous amount of bandwidth?

rchelifan 11-07-2009 11:54 PM

Just want to add that I also waiting for this as well.

anantgarg 11-08-2009 03:18 AM

@rchelifan The current beta version is going to be the final version. We are also launching a new site next week.

@BucWild you can now customize CometChat to display all online users instead of only friends.

How try us this statment?

anantgarg 11-12-2009 03:46 AM

CometChat is as efficient as any self hosted solution can be (without special hardware or software). We have thousands of customers running CometChat on shared hosts like URLJet etc.

The software uses smart polling (polls depending on user activity) and JSON to ensure that the size of every data packet is as small as possible.

The current beta release is going to be the final version. We are launching our new site very soon and hence the delay in going final.

wtsnake 11-21-2009 08:46 PM

will this work for 4.0?

testbot 12-10-2009 12:02 AM

i'm going to write something similar and give it away for free or for only a few $ just because i think that developer is being greedy. that's way too much to charge.

For vb4.0 too?

I would like to donate few bucks even if u release for free.

testbot 12-14-2009 02:40 PM

it'll be developed on 3.8 but when 4.0 is fully release we will upgrade it accordingly.

i talked to one of my developers this morning and based on the amount of time he told me i think i can have it done this week but would have to charge $19.99. that will cover my development and support costs.

does that seem fair?

Quite fair if it'll work perfact and wont cause much server load.

jthorpe 12-21-2009 01:48 AM

Cometchat was KILLING my servers. I have a vb forum with 90,000 members and around 1100 members on at once. The amount of queries was over the top, and was causing my server load average to go up to 15 from 1-2. Now that I have taken it off, things are good again.

No better solution yet?:(

I would LOVE to see this added, please reply to this thread if/when anyone makes it so that I can be notified of it being ready for download.

I see that cometchat is avaliable but I heard its really hard on the server. I only use a shared server so I don't know if its an option for me.

No matter what, this is more than likely going to kill a server. Unless you set it to refresh every 3 minutes xD But i believe that would ruin it no? I just recommend getting a bigger server ;)

ti07shadow 01-17-2010 04:34 AM

I do believe commet chat shouldnt effect server haul, do to the fact its not refreshign the page its literally refreshing the content itself through ajax. so theres no actual site or frame refreshign at all. I have made soemthign similar to this chat function for a regular shoutbox and theres no sever haul at all. course it be nice to see a free version of comet chat for those who dont want to go out of their way and spend $49.00 USD for it.

DieselTruck 04-27-2010 06:23 PM

Ttt..

Anyone come up with anything else?

jacobskinner811 05-06-2010 04:24 AM

I was thinking about buying cometchat, i dont mind paying 49 bucks but i am worried about how much bandwidth it will use...is it true that it can dramatically effect your bandwidth or has that been fixed?

DieselTruck 05-13-2010 05:16 AM

It's definitely going to increase your bandwidth but not to the point where you should notice it...

I've just purchased and installed Comet Chat and initially had issues with load with around 200 people online concurrently. I got help from other Comet Chat users and staff and tweaked some settings and now it's back to an acceptable level.

Would definitely recommend, but don't underestimate the load it's going to put on your DB in it's default setup.

Trek 06-11-2010 08:48 PM

I just purchased this and the vB integration is minimal at best. There's no way to set what usergroups can use it, no profile settings for members to set if they want to display it or not, etc.

There's also no adminCP integration at all.

Granted most of this can be code custom (which I'll do this weekend) but it's pretty thin as far as integration goes.

While while it DOES work and still is pretty cool, make sure you do more research than I did before spending the cash on it.

Yeah, the integration is miminal, but the "coding" to limit what usergroups can use it is easy. It works great for me and the author is responsive to help requests.

Yeah, I added that in just now. Basically limiting to specific usergroups and also allowing members to turn it on/off.

Were you able to get a full list of online users though? It only lists friends by default and I'd rather it listed all online users instead. I've asked in their support forums, but if you've already done it, that'd help speed things up as the mod is really only useful to me if it shows online users.

Ideally I'd like to see it display online friends at the top of the list, then the rest of the online users under it. I'm not that good with SQL and/or vB4's user tables though.

Nevermind, I found a post on their forums with the code I needed, thanks!

DieselMinded 06-28-2010 03:54 PM

been working on this cometchat for the past week and decided to drop it like it was hot!!

Quote:

i want a refund , this software is not as advertised , games only work half ass , the bar reloads on every page load , it slows my site down big time ! the online list has no relevance at all to who really is online , i have 20 hrs into integrating this to my site and now im taking it off because support here sucks and the forums are worst, not to mention the software is over priced and full of ads that prevent it from working.

i was told there is a money back guarantee , well im taking it off my site and i would like a refund
now i need an alternative ?

The who's online has different queries on their forums for different software to get what you want (I cut and pasted one for vB4 to get all of my users, not just friends to be listed).

There are no Ads (other than a link back to comet chat).

If it took someone 20 hours to only get it screwed up, they... It took me about an hour to get it working and integrated the way I wanted it. Including the time searching their forums for the answer I needed.

Anyway, you can take that quote as gospel, or not. Entirely up to you. =) Hope you find what you're looking for.

Konstantinos 10-23-2010 11:40 AM

cometchat offers a service called comet service (or something) which (as they claim) they take all the server load on their server ..

winlux 11-01-2010 09:17 PM

I guess i could make a mod which is an almost exact replica to facebooks with different skins... let me get back to you guys on this one.

customcolor 11-08-2010 02:33 AM

if you could get ajaxim to log in using vb user library than i want it...i put it up but could not figure out how to make it read from vb user data base ..."log in to vb and it logs you into ajaxim also"

by the way ajaxim is free.

im following this one!!

andrew.lee 12-20-2010 11:43 PM

Hey Guys -
I just put out a plugin that adds chat that looks a lot like facebook's. It's a toolbar. It maintains state when you go from page-to-page (so you can browse while chatting). It lets you have multiple chats, both group and 1 on 1, it does some fancy stuff like real-time-translation. It can do single-sign-on with vBulletin and/or it can do login with Facebook / Twitter (so that your "visitors" can participate in chats too).

It's HOSTED too, so it won't affect load on your server at all, and it won't slow down when you've got 200 users pounding on it. We've worked very hard to make it fast, fast, fast!

The mod is here:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=255443

You can see it working here: (it's the toolbar along the bottom)

What can it do better than CometChat or ArrowChat? From the demo i've seen it has the ability to setup usergroups like 'staff'. But what else since it seems that you want to charge a lot more than they do in the future?

They have just released the first version of new software. Like Arrowchat, their functionality is expanding.
You can request functionality here:
