Very nice hack.

Would it be possible though to have the usergroup text altered to show "Banned " or something similar while a ban is in force, in the next update ?

Thank you for this hack. Installed. But I have a question:

User has 9 points that have an expiration period of 1 week. I give him 3 more permanent points. As a result, he'll be banned. However, total number of points will not go above 10. So, what will happen after 1 week, when expiration date for those 9 points comes? Will all 3 permanent points remain, or only 1 that was needed to reach maximum of 10 points?

Confirmed, It works on 3.6.5 but it does NOT ban.

The image paths are not correct, make sure you've uploaded them to the right place on your server.
