Cool hack but can "This hack added one query to every page on your forum a member goes to." this one query be eliminated with a code change somehow?

adrianne 07-27-2007 07:00 PM

I seem to be having an issue with this now since the upgrade. When we select a thread to force users to read, and when the member clicks the thread they are being required to read, it doesn't take them to the thread. Instead it just stays on the message telling them there is a message for them to read.

I'm not sure if this issue is due to the recent upgrade or because I had 2 threads selected for members to read.

Nathan2006 07-28-2007 03:46 AM

This hack HERE is not working since I installed your hack :(

Is there anyway to have it working?

Thanks for any help :)

chikkoo 07-28-2007 08:34 AM

Nice trick to force new members to read rules, I need to test this soon.

If I had an easy way, I would have done it. It is not a big query and runs fast. All parts of it are indexed.

No clue. It should not affect the other. If you read one, then the other should not bother him until he has read the first one.

Can you tell me what does not work or have a fix for it. I dont ready want to start playing around with someone else's hack. Maybe try changing the order in which plug-ins run.

Bro_Joey_Gowdy 07-31-2007 08:18 PM

Suggestion:

I have the welcome thread mod installed that creates a new welcome thread when a new user registers... it would be interresting to have that new user to be unable to view anything else until they few the welcome thread created for them.

You want this hack to go down to the user option on who has to view a thread.

You are better off with a new hack made just for it. I do create custom hacks for users for a price. I have an idea on where to start.

ozmazdaclub 08-01-2007 01:52 PM

doesn't appear to work with vbadvanced even though the settings are set correctly. Please advise.

You have to elaborate what does not work. The whole hack? The force reading? Just be more clear.

If I think you mean the force reading part, vbadvanced does not use global.php unfortunately.

Zaiaku 08-01-2007 02:02 PM

Awesome idea.

ozmazdaclub 08-01-2007 02:26 PM

yeah the force read i get the same issue as Invalid ID gets

Hi Abe,

After installing your hack when going to thread tools and move a thread to the recycle bin forum it says that thread has no forum selected in the recycle bin options but there is.

Once I uninstall your hack it works fine :(

Thanks for any help :)

Try changing the order in which the plug-ins execute.

dethfire 08-02-2007 12:56 PM

hmm it forced my users to read all threads, no matter what forum they were looking in. FOr example if I set 1 force read threads in 6 different forums, if a user visits one forum they must read through 6 threads. It nearly causes a riot, people very annoyed!

rpainter 08-02-2007 01:27 PM

Great Mod!!!!

Very useful

Sorry, no setting yet for it only to show in some forums.

PixelFx 08-03-2007 01:26 PM

*Pokes head into chat* you know this is pretty cool hack, thanks for making it :D, I marked it installed, although I haven't used it yet. But I have a site where this will help a lot.

Veer 08-03-2007 02:23 PM

I Installed it and works good, thanks.

But I have a suggestion..
when we add many threads (up to 5, 10 or more) users may not understand what happens to forum, why are they getting same error again and again..

Can you add some details on error page to show All Forced Threads List with their Titles n Links to visit forced threads?

Thanks.

dc3dreamer 08-04-2007 12:54 AM

This is exactly what I needed to force my lazy customers to read about new releases, critical bugz, etc. THANKS!!! A very clever idea.

foulplay 08-04-2007 12:04 PM

Is it possible to allow certain forums to trigger an alert? I want certain members to view specific rules before they proceed.

No option for that yet. Right now it is all or nothing.

inciarco 08-05-2007 04:28 AM

Great Hack Abe1!!

It'd be Great that in Future Versions of it you could include a List of the Forums that are being Forced to Read by Users!! ;)

It'd be Great too to Manage a Cookie Based Control for Guests for them to be forced to Read the Threads Too?? (In this Version Guests are not Being forced to Read a Thread). (Sometimes is Very Important to Show Guests the Rules of the Forums, and the Guides to Navigate in Them and Use Them, and Forcing them to Read a Thread or Threads could be a Great Idea) ;)

I hope you could Implement those little Ideas Abe1!! :p

My Best Regards To You!! ;)

:)

Tralala 08-05-2007 05:04 AM

Great idea, Abe1! I love it! I am also a happy user of your Forms Hack.

Would there be any way to integrate this with that one? To force users to go to the form before doing anything else? I'd love it if that were possible.

Coders Shack 08-05-2007 03:16 PM

haha, what a great fukin idea!

Tralala 08-05-2007 04:06 PM

And the good news is, Abe1 wrote both of 'em, so if there's anyone out there that can integrate them, he's the one. :) :)

Dont think I'll do it right now. Try my edit new thread button if you want them to use the form to create a new thread.

henners 08-07-2007 10:51 AM

Great hack, simple implementation. Much appreciated buddy!

Foxtrotelite 08-10-2007 12:37 AM

Can this be used in different ways? By this I mean, lets say that I have a a forum with several boards on it such as "Join the Clan" and "lobby" Could it be set to make users read the forced topic only if they try to go into the "join the clan" area? and allow them not to have to read it if they just go to the "lobby" area?

dellow 08-10-2007 08:47 AM

Great idea, installed.

but i need only admin to force users to read, so if at least need something just to enable it and disable it.

Thank you again.

Working on both features.

Ava-Kyrillos 08-10-2007 01:27 PM

Hello

This is greet hack I installed it,
But I want to make this option to Admins only not for mods. ,
Please tell me how to nake this?

Thanks a lot
George

clockwor305 08-10-2007 05:04 PM

Just installed on 3.6.8, haven't seen any problems.

How would that help? Every time they went to create a new thread, it would take them to the form? That's overkill and would prevent users from creating normal threads.

In my case, this is a one-time form, soliciting their feedback for volunteer time shifts (for a charity.) If there was a way to "force" them to visit it, I wouldn't have to keep reminding them of our deadline.

Thanks anyway...

Megatr0n 08-15-2007 09:29 PM

What happens if we delete the thread that we forced the users to read? Will the affect of redirecting users to read that thread be uplifted? Will users who login later be directed to the homepage as usual? Cuz some users have reported they get the forceread message when they login but then when the thread is deleted it doesn't enable them to browse the forum and post. It's like their banned? :S

aslan 08-15-2007 10:23 PM

Very good hack. Installed and working w/o any problem.

MiahBeSmokin420 08-16-2007 12:54 AM

ya i had reports of people getting stuck at that message

not being able to go past it no matter what

and trust me they are not dumb kids either

is there a reason for that?

TTG 08-17-2007 11:29 AM

Had this installed and recently tested my registration procedure :-

When I register, the first thing I get is the pop up window with 'forced thread warning'.
When I click on it to read the thread it tells me that I do not have permission to read the thread, I have quite a few forums where members must make at least one post to view content, I tried to close the window and the only way I can close it it by using the 'x' on the top right. It then gives me another warning pop up with the same message because I had done a few forced readings for members.
It sure was a hassle to get into the forum itself that way. And this all happened before activation.
So if newly registered members encounter this before even activating their account????

I would have to look at your forum.

I'm going to try to make it that they need permission to view the thread for this error message to come up. For now, dont delete theads before removing this feature and dont force users to read a thread if they dont have permission.
