That has happened to me also... and I got a call from a famous person too! :)

I run a Musclecar website and most of my users aren't into the Import scene.. They like American Musclecars with big V8s. Anyway, one day I got a call from someone named "Lisa Kubo".. She said that while searching google she found a thread on my forum that was insulting her and she wanted it removed. At the time, I had no idea who she was or what she was talking about but I promised to delete this thread if that would make her happy. When I finally saw the thread in question I knew exactly who she was.. She is a very famous import drag racer ( http://womensracingjournal.com/nov2002/kubo.php )! In the thread, a couple of my members were making fun of her "pink" honda Civic and one of them made a rude remark about her being a little overweight (this is what was offending her).

Anyway, I deleted the thread and never heard anything from her again. When I figured out how she got my number (from whois) I removed it (I had no idea it was even listed).

Group,

Even though nobody has made a reply to this post in the past 3 years, and I know sometimes people freak out for posting to an "inactive" post, I really cant see why, but anyway I would like to add to this post the following information.

I myself have never had any site members call me up from the whois database like some of you have, but I have had domain registration companies and web hosting companies call me up shortly after registering a domain name trying to sell me their services. From what I could tell it was like they get sent a notification alert right after you register, because it was usually less than 48 hours they would be calling me.

After about 3 or 4 of those phone calls I finally change the number on my whois information and the calls stopped.

I've had this happen before! :(

What I do these days is keep a pre-paid cell phone around for this kind of stuff. I keep maybe 20 minutes on it and give that number to anyone I don't want calling my house or *real* cell phone. I think I've switched pre-paid numbers about 4 times to date (the free phones they give you last about 3 months if you're lucky).

god it's so easy to get someone's personal info like phone # and address just by doing a google search. It's happened to me

I do have a throwaway phone number in the Seattle area I got for free (even has "spam" or "junk" in the numbers). I use it now for virtually everything.

Just as there are visual captchas, there should be audio ones to verify a person is calling, not a machine; for example, it says "Repeat this number: 147" and if the person does, they're believed to be human.
