There are two settings for controlling handling of media files - can_play_musicbox and can_save_musicbox. If you have both switched on, they can launch the inbuild media player and also use the normal link to save the file. You can selectively disable one or both options with these parameters

MissKalunji 03-27-2006 12:43 PM

but if you give alink wont that give an easy access for people to link through your files?

The link is via the LDM script, so it only works if the person who is trying to use it is actually allowed access to the file. If someone tries to paste the link somewhere else, then VB will still be able to determine their username on the board. So, if you deny access to files to people who are not logged on, you prevent leaching.

Andrew, I thought that the fix for files to retain there names was done in 2.1.5? I have 2.1.6 installed, I uploaded a file and it didn't retain it's name?

The file retains its name when it is downloaded again. On your server, it is given a temporary name. This is to stop people finding things...

|oR|Greg 03-27-2006 02:32 PM

I understand that, but that's not the case.

Download the ieSpellChecker tool... and you'll see it gives you some whacked out name...

When did you enter this file? With an earlier version of LDM? In that case, it never tracked the filename in the first place.

If this is a new upload, then there's a problem. Let me know.

Sigh, I don't know man, but I just uploaded something last night after the upgrade, it didn't retain the name. I downloaded the file, renamed it, re-uploaded it, and it's fine. Such is life. Thanks for the great hack.

As you can see on the site, I use it to it's full potential.

I'm bemused by this. If you find out more, I'll gladly take a look.

shiva 03-28-2006 02:44 AM

I upgraded, though had a couple of problems because of my host. Works fine so far, though auto parsing of links will only work on new posts. (No biggie, just re-add them in)

Where's that setting in admin to allow/prohibit duplicates by default? Too many settings... :)

LDM/admin/settings/allow_duplicates (bottom of the first group)

Upon further investigation, my forum halted with javascript errors right after the upgrade as well. I did a reinstallation and now everything is working. Kinda strange, don't know why your hack hosed the javascript for the WYSIWYG editor?

Here's the useless thread I made over at vbulletin.com

Greg, I'm happy to try to track down problems, but I can't do much with words like 'hosed'. You described this hack on vbulletin.com as 'a hack that you were suspect of' - maybe you can explain why so that we can get to the bottoms of this?

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 12:51 PM

I fixed it Andrew, no need to investigate, it was user error on my part. All fixed. Thanks.

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 01:40 PM

I do have a question though Andrew. I want to start making my own templates to use like the links_linkbit_table, ya know, something that I can select that is my own formatting, but I don't want to overwrite your templates.

I went into Styles & Templates, added a new template with the code I want to use, but it doesn't add it to your Links and Downloads of course, just to the Custom Templates section. How do I use that new template in LDM?

You're wanting to have additional templates, rather than just a different style? Easiest approach would be to create a new style and simply customise one of the linkbit templates in that style, and tell LDM to use the new style for those categories of interest (on the edit category/display settings tab)

If you really want to add additional templates, then this is a straightforward edit to the code. Go into local_links_include.php, and about 250 lines in, you'll find an array declaration as follows:

PHP Code:

$linkbitcache = array(

"links_linkbit_short" => array("collapse"=>0"defcol"=>1"maxcol"=>3"altbit"=>"links_linkbit"),

"links_linkbit" => array("collapse"=>"links_linkbit_short""defcol"=>1"maxcol"=>1"altbit"=>"links_linkbit"),

"links_linkbit_table" => array("collapse"=>"links_linkbit_short""defcol"=>1"maxcol"=>2"altbit"=>"links_linkbit_table"),

"links_linkbit_photo" => array("collapse"=>0"defcol"=>$maxpic"maxcol"=>$maxpic"altbit"=>"links_linkbit"),
);

Just add your new template to the end of the array, and it will magically appear on the list of choices.

For example:
PHP Code:

    "mylinks_linkbit_new" => array("collapse"=>"links_linkbit_short""defcol"=>1"maxcol"=>1"altbit"=>"links_linkbit"),

There are a few lines of comment just above the array, explaining the parameters.

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 02:14 PM

I'll try with the code you mentioned. However I'm curious as to what you mean about a new style? How do I add a new style to LDM?

You add a new style to VBulletin (admincp/styles and templates/style manager/add new style). It will pick up all the standard templates, including all those for LDM.

Then in LDM, either per category on the add/edit category, display settings tab, (or globally on the admin/settings if you want the change everywhere), set default_style to the new style you've created. That way you can customise the standard LDM templates for just part of your database.

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 02:33 PM

Oh, I get it, so it's just a much easier way of adding a new "template" really, but sort of cheating by adding a new style, then editing the templates in that new style. I like that, but I prefer just adding 1 template and updating the .php file. It's not hard, and has less clutter on the site in my opinion. I've done what you suggested with the .php file, works great! :) Thanks... Once I get some new templates up and running I'll shoot them up here, and if you like them, use them. Thanks again for a great hack/support.

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 04:34 PM

Well, I got my new template up and running, very simple and linked to our vBPicGallery now! Only for 4 of my guys that have updated the vBPicGallery, but it's a start!

Here is the VERY BASIC template I made...

Code:

<tr id="linkid$linkid">

<td width="105" align="$stylevar[left]">$linkimgjump</td>

<td align="left">
$linkurljump <if condition="$linknew">$linknew</if>
</td>

<td width="15%">
<span class="smallfont">
$linkeditbit
<if condition="$links_permissions[can_view_names]"><a href="member.php?u=$linkuserid">$linkusername</a></if>
<if condition="$links_permissions[can_set_display_order]">[$thisorder]</if><br />
$linkdate
<if condition="$links_permissions[can_view_hits]">$vbphrase[ll_hits] $linkhits</if>
<if condition="$links_permissions[can_moderate_links] and $linkstatus==$LINK_HIDDEN"><br />[$vbphrase[ll_hidden]]</if>
</span>
</td>

</tr>

Woot! LOVE the new additions!!
:D

but for doing my part...
I think I found some Bugs and/or minor issues in 2.1.6rc2. :confused:
(some of these may not be due to LDM, I realize...but I don't know program stuff well enough to tell the difference. :( so apologies if so.)
  1. If you have a title with "quotes" in it....the title gets chopped off at the quote when you go back and edit the link.

  2. if bbcode in title... profile bit of "recent hits" ...just show the code not the actual bbcode output (ie: [ b ] instead of actually showing bold type. )

  3. Auto thread creation in forums bugs:
    • the LINK (that goes to the file/link that was uploaded) that is generated from the auto-thread creation plugin..... results in a "Unfortunately, you do not have sufficient permission to access this entry, as it is reserved for another usergroup. Please contact us for more information if necessary". this is either a bug or I just can't find out where to change the permissions (I'm Admin and all the permissions are set correctly as far as I can tell :confused: ). edit: ahh it only seems to happen when change category. see next.

    • I think it related to this bug: The link is wrong. It lists the wrong category! eg: add link from "whatever" category >> changed category when filling out form (parent category) >> result is that it upload to correct category...but link in new thread created shows file in the original whatever category.

    • need some kind of explanation for users. Like update explanation text for choosing a "Parent Forum" when this plugin is install.

      Since there is no text or explanation of what is happening from a user perspective.... Users will have NO IDEA where or how the thread is being created when adding links. took me a bit to figure it out actually :( (granted...I'm a dope a lot of the times but.... so are most users. :p).
  4. an image on the links_linkbit is now broken. dunno why and it wasn't broken before 2.1.6rc2. problem is I can't fix it because I dunno what the image is supposed to be cause the path is weird:
    Quote:

    htt p:/ /www.MYSITE.net/image.php?u=2&dateline=1142819619
    :confused: what is that? ugh! to broken images. :( see attached image.

  5. Featured sites need to display same as the template_linkbit format chosen. Don't know if this is intentional, but seems like a bug (forgot to add) kinda thing. I was gunna use the table format, but when I do the featured sites still come out as default linkbit, so it looks weird/inconsistent on the page.

  6. edit link >> expand/collapse buttons in Parent Categories are... misplaced? or not working right? eitherway...when you actually click the expand collapse button...you get craziness. see attached pics.

  7. edit link >> highlight should UNhighlight when choosing new category. it doesn't. makes it seem like both are chosen or the new chosen category "doesn't take". see attached pic

  8. is it just me?..... or does LDM get majorly stuck at 100% for like ...eternity....before finishing when upload larger files? Mine sits at 100% for literally a full few minutes most of the time when uploading anything but the smallest of files.

hmmmm... I think that's it for now. :) hope that is clear and actually helps.
(and not just create more work for you. :()

again this hack and Andrew pwn!

THanks - that's really helpful.

On the 'stuck at 100%' - are you uploading large images and creating thumbnails - the php routine that does that cleanly is a REAL cpu hog.

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 05:35 PM

Thanks Andrew, wouldn't have been possible without you.

Hey, maybe you want to try and tackle this other idea I had, maybe not.

A checkbox to the right of a threads title when you're creating a new thread. The checkbox, if checked, disabled/Hides EVERYTHING other then the Submit New Thread button.

The purpose of the checkbox would be to turn the title of the new thread into a link. So for example, if in the title I made it www.eirma.org, in the Forum Display, it would get a different statusicon, and the title would be parsed as <a href, etc...

Essentially allowing any forum to have links embedded amongst the threads. An edit button would have to be added because you wouldn't be able to go inside the thread to edit it, since the link went off-site. Maybe even add an extra column to the forumdisplay for click tracking. Put dashes in the Replies and Views columns, or maybe change Views to Views/Clicks and track it that way.

Let me think about it ... I've got eight hours on aircraft tomorrow...

|oR|Greg 03-28-2006 06:59 PM

Enjoy your flight, think about the wonders of AJAX and making threads into links. Think even about making it so veratile that you can charge for it! Except me of course :)

GrendelKhan{TSU 03-28-2006 09:42 PM

Is there any way to control the column widths for the Title, Description, and number of entries?

My title is all smooshed up while the description takes up waaaaaaay too much width unneccessarily.

I don't want to change the templates either just to have it wiped out with next update. (but I will cause it looks fugly as is. :() where would I go to change that anyway?

(along the same line: is there a way or how would go about controlling how the subforum categories links are displayed?)

hmmm.....

future suggestion:

need to make so you can exclude Featured Site from appearing in categories (of choice)....it can be confusing or sometimes...just not appropriate to appear.

shiva 03-29-2006 06:09 AM

here's a strange idea that occured to me...

If you remove the need to have a file/url/image uploaded, and just have a post, what you have is a very simple article system (with a good template done up for it).

Maybe a little checkbox to turn off the need for a file/url?

I haven't checked through this thread, so this may already have been brought up:

Someone submitted a link to my site, and it always fails checking, and shows as broken, but the link does work fine - the only way around getting it to work correctly was to go in to the database and manually change it from a zero to a one.

Is this just an isolated issue or something pretty usual?

Great hack, thanks so much :)

now i get all sorts of problems....come to think of it i didn't have vbadvance on here b4....

my add link is all messed up

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: param_upload() in /home/content/T/y/e/Tyegurl/html/vBulletin/local_links.php on line 608

okay i reallize that vbadvance likes full urls so is this my problem and where do i correct and with what lol

and this is line 608

Code:

        param_upload($maxupload, $mimetypes, $space_used, $space_max);

The fatal call to param_upload is the give away. You have not uploaded all the code - specifically, you have not uploaded the new local_links_include.php, as the param_upload routine changed name between some of the recent releases.

Just upload all the code, rerun the product installer (probably best to tell it to uninstall then to install) and you should be ok.

There are some urls that do work fine but do not respond to LDM's validation check. This is because the site has blocked the use of the piece of code that is used to validate the link. Sometimes, if you use the cURL interface rather than the fopen() interface, it works better - if you don't understand this, then perhaps not worth trying, but if you do understand, then check to see if your php installation includes the curl library.

If you remove the need to have a file/url/image uploaded, and just have a post, what you have is a very simple article system (with a good template done up for it).

Maybe a little checkbox to turn off the need for a file/url?

Aha - there already is one - ldm/admin/settings/allow_null_links
