I don't see why you're being so hostile. I was trying to have a simple debate on the uninstaller. :(

That's why, because I'm not willing to have a debate on the uninstaller.

I've explained to you why I haven't added or plan to add an uninstaller for the time being, and yet you continue saying the same thing over and over again.

cybermomcafe 03-07-2004 05:51 PM

mickmel, thank you... I missed where the type of phrase changed on the last two :)

and John, Great Job! No complaints here. ;)

Amzadi 03-07-2004 06:03 PM

Forget the uninstaller, lets get more games! :)

Alzeimer 03-07-2004 06:07 PM

Cool, installed and working ;)

Thanks John. :)

I'm sorry but having read the discussion you've created over the simple issue of uninstalling, I find you extremely ungrateful with your approach to this, John has put a hell of a lot of effort into this arcade and people should be thankful if they get any support at all to be honest as John gives support entirely in his own time and off his own back, that and the fact this is meant to be a site for people who have some capability of running a website properly. Anyone who feels they have enough craft to be running a beta version of Vbulletin in the first place, should at least make the effort to learn the basics of running a website and very basic programs such as phpmyadmin, mysql and vBulletin, etc, rather than basically hounding the developer of an excellent hack over mainly very basic issues and therefore stunting the development of future addons and game releases.

I don't think most people seem to realise that they are getting something that is completely free that a lot of companies would charge for and that any support given by John is as said above, completely off his own back and in his own time.... and when most of the problems people bombard him with are very basic and have mainly been asked and answered several times if people bothered to read through the thread first.

There have been a few hundred successful installs of the arcade hack now, virtually all perfectly first time, or in certain cases after correcting the mistakes the person installing the arcade has made themselves. Virtually every potential problem people may come across has been brought up several times and every single one of these problems has ended up being the error of the installer or their hardware, not the arcade itself. It installs and runs seemlessly every time when done right.

Ok yeah, an uninstaller would be nice, but it takes so little knowledge and effort to delete any redunant tables ("drop table" - not difficult really is it), whereas it would take a lot longer for John to make an uninstaller, which to be honest is completely not needed anyway, as virtually every forum running this hack would suffer a severe decline in users if the arcade was suddenly no longer available.

forum4games - There was a steady flow of games being released, but due to one spiteful nasty person, it's kind of dried up a little at the moment. John is probably very busy at the moment anyway which would explain a slight dry patch, as he is developing addons and the likes for the arcade (besides his r/l work commitments and the likes), so i'd recommend just sitting tight and wait to see what comes next. :) There is also the fact that he has asked other people to convert games and release them for the arcade, with full instructions being in the other arcade thread. :)

I've had a lot of rude emails from people (all of them anonymous, I might add) - a lot of them *demanding" changes, new additions, and new games. That's where things start to annoy me. When people go so far as to make demands (and in one case, a threat) for work to be done, I lose all interest in what I'm doing here.

I would love to convert games, code free addons, etc. for a living - but since that isn't an option, I have to earn money another way. Please be patient, this whole thing is give, give, give. I don't get anything back, and I don't expect to - I'd be happy with just a little more consideration from some people!

fonzerelli_79 03-09-2004 12:27 AM

seriously john, dont listen to any of the halfwits which are giving you abuse

you gave up a lot of time and provided a huge hack which installs perfectly (regardless of what some people have said)

im not a great coder but ill do my best to see if i can convert any games - i think other members should follow suit :)

great hack.

a couple suggestions:

styles with checkboxes on install script, so you can choose which styles will get the arcade templates.

a way to change order of games on the arcade page in acp.

kudos.

When I try to run arcadeupdate.php I get the following error:

Warning: main(./global.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/garza/public_html/forums/includes/cron/arcadeupdate.php on line 14

Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required './global.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/garza/public_html/forums/includes/cron/arcadeupdate.php on line 14

Can anyone help?

mharmon 03-09-2004 10:06 PM

How can I also make it so that usergroups with Arcade privs can only see the Arcade link in the navbar?

I'd rather not have my guests see it.

Thanks.

Right, I wasn't demanding or even really asking. I was requesting, not complaining. If money is an issue, then I'm sure $ could be offered (by myself) for an uninstaller that works.

Dan P. 03-10-2004 05:09 PM

First off cool mod. For those of you who have this working how big of a bandwidth jump have you seen to your board ?

thakikka 03-10-2004 06:08 PM

As there is already counted how long each user is playing ... is there any possibility to limit the total play time every 24 hours / every day to xx minutes by usergroup? so i could offer my premium members and contributers a unlimited play time and the others only can play xx minutes a day.

Leah 03-10-2004 07:12 PM

Is there a way I can make the "on and off switch" for the arcade only available to admins and not supermoderators?

Hey ogden2k,

Some people may not be well versed in phpmyadmin. (its called RTFM)

OR

1. Fork up some "green backs" $40-50$ and I am sure anyone would build you what you need.

OR/AND

2. Try 2nd DEV install were you do hacking. (like everyone else does ?)

OR

3. Don't install it and make your own.

You got a big set of brass balls as do many of the people that "demand" anything @ this site. This site is full of people that take time out of their life to give some love to other "members" that own VB.

Time is money. If you do not like it don't use it.
If I were John, you would get the "finger". (but John is a nice guy)

The swf files arn't that big at all. I don't have a significant b/w increase since the arcade is online... (i guess you can compare it with couple of pics in a gallery)

Go to admincp => usergroups => edit usergroup permissions

you can exclude any group to view/play/add comments/etc...

Martin64 03-11-2004 01:44 AM

I have 2000+ members on my forum and virtually all my members play challanges along side most of the games pretty regularly and to be honest, i've found the bandwidth increase to be minimal. It's gone up by maybe 30-40meg a month for me. The initial burst on your bandwidth will be a lot higher, but once your members get over that initial novelty value and start playng the games when they feel like it rather than because it's shiny and new, it levels out pretty quickly. :)
