Oh, finally a real question :)

You may add another banner with click tracking enabled, which however never shows up (choose a location which isn't shown at your forums). Then, link this banner in your text ad and you are done. The link looks like: http://www.domain.tld/[forum/]rbs_banner.php?id=N, where N is the id of your hidden banner.

I've tested this successfully with the banner itself (and no hidden copy):
URL: http://www.domain.tld/
Click Tracking: checked
Text:
HTML Code:

<a href="http://www.domain.tld/forums/rbs_banner.php?id=40"><img border="0" alt="Statistics" src="http://www.domain.tld/stats/maps.png" style="background: url(http://www.domain.tld/forums/images/misc/world.jpg);" /></a>
Works! :)

You don't have to know what they mean, unless you want to change the default behaviour. Left alone, the rotating banner settings just work fine :)

Have you tried to setup a banner with the suggested template change? If not, please watch the movie end read the help. This product is not guessing where you may want to show banners, you decide and make a small change ... that's it :)

bad2dbone 06-06-2011 12:49 AM

Yeah I've watched the video but ill go ahead and take a look @ it again

A directly linked external site reduces the own ranking of page by 1 point, while using rel="nofollow" does not have side effects.

I'm not sure I follow... I have a company paying me to have their link in a text ad. Could you give me an example of how I would write the link to give them the best search results while still using the click counter?

Thanks again

You don't want a text ad for a banner, you want a graphic (.jpg, .png, or .gif). Consider a full banner size of 468X60. Don't fill it with so much tiny text that nobody can read it. You link it to their site in the RBS options.

Don't ever mention to them that you have click tracking. Just sell the ad by telling them it will improve their Search Engine rankings, which it should if you have a busy forum. But you won't get a lot of clicks so you don't want them latching onto that as a measure of success.

This company didn't want a graphic banner, they wanted a text banner. They got what they wanted, I just want to make sure I'm getting them the most for their money.

NovoCiv 06-09-2011 06:08 PM

I can't get this to work at all.

I just want to show random images somewhere that an ad would normally go and no matter what I do I can't get any of the images to show up.

I don't understand this mod and I followed the video...

zackw 06-09-2011 08:49 PM

Hi, we've ran this product for some time but after updating the forum to the latest version the banners aren't showing up. I checked settings that the product is enabled and so forth, but no good. The banners stopped appearing. What can I check or do?

If I have to remove and reinstall the product, can I save all the data? There are about 30 or 40 banners that I don't want to create again!

Verify your banners show up in those spots normally while not using this mod. If you can't get them to show up without RBS, you'll never see them with it.

During the upgrade you probably reverted the templates where the placeholders were. Just place them again, or just put them in the default ad locations and you won't have to worry about that happening again.

Your banners aren't saved in this product, they're in your banners folder. I take it you weren't the person that set this up, but you're going to have to learn it if you want to use it.

You have asked and I have answered. If you don't know what it means, there isn't much I can do. Please Google for nofollow and continue reading with Google documents about SEO. This argument goes far beyond this product, but I felt I needed to tell you about potential side effects ... which are explained in detail by Google :)

Maybe if you tell us what you don't understand, we are able to tell you more about it.

This mod doesn't do any guess-work. It requires you to make changes to your template(s) on your own and most probably you have best results going first with the default banners before starting to think about implementing your own.

Most of the users of this mod first delete the default banners, then try and of course, they don't get the expected results. There is a practical reason for the existance of those banners, and I can only reccomend to use them first, with the simple and plain example shown in the movie and in the help files.

I don't do you any damage with these banners, they are guaranteed to work. Once you have mastered to show those (level: extra-easy), you probably will copy one and change it ... or try your own.

Once you have accepted that the mod needs a little attention and have made a few experimants, you will discover its power ... and never will let it go again :)

I realize my graphical banners are in a folder, I'm talking about the actual data, I wasn't sure if it stores info in the database, or in an XML file somewhere. Just wondering how to back it up.

Videx 06-11-2011 01:12 AM

It's in the db and will be in your regular db backups. It would be nice if products erased all traces of themselves upon uninstallation including db stuff, but I've never seen that to be the case. Still, I wouldn't remove or reinstall except as a last resort since that seems unlikely to fix the issue. Have you checked the templates for the placeholder as I suggested?

If you have uninstalled the product, it has cleaned up after itself and deleted banners and the rbs_banners and rbs_hits tables.

This would explain why banners have gone. However, since you have surely (have you?) a backup of your forums, made as reccomended by vBulletin Solutions before any upgrade, you should be able to restore the rbs_banners and rbs_hits tables easily :)

First, assure us the banner appears fine when placed in the default ad spots (not using this mod). And give us a link so we can see it.

I can't see why it should not work. It looks like a standard style and if you can show an 'X' on it, you can also show a banner.

Please try to show an 'X' first :)

WendM 06-17-2011 10:22 PM

got it working fine in my header now here: http://yourghost.co.uk/forum.php

would be great if the Rotating Banner system were Ajax based so the banners would change without the need to refresh the page...any chance of this, plz? :)

What is rbs_iframe.php in the new version in a folder called addons?

It's a pretty old addition (but unsupported) for all those who asked how to rotate a banner in-place or show a banner outside vBulletin. If I recall right, the discussion was about post 800.

Problem:

For banner positions greater than 10 it does not work. Either the code don't even show at all when I try to put it in my blog OR the raw code shows in the page source but not the ad. Has the >10 mode been tested at all?

dmm2020 06-20-2011 10:36 PM

With the latest upgrade, the following text in the rbs configuration UI should be changed since the limit really does not apply - might be confusing for some otherwise.

Quote:

Allows to specify up to 10 banner locations. The %d parameter replaces the numeric location in your template, e.g.: <!--@vbbanners:0@--> will insert the standard horizontal banner from the previous versions. Currently, only placeholders from 0 to 9 are allowed, where 0 and 1 cover the previous horizontal and vertical banner locations.

LordDB 06-20-2011 11:01 PM

Thx, y2ksw! With that Addon, it now does what I want, it autorefreshes! :) Just got to tweak it a little!

Have you changed the relative option in vbulletin options?

Yes I have. The input fields to place the ad changes when I made the adjustments, but when I put <!--@vbbanners:10@--> in an ad spot, nothing appears. If I put <!--@vbbanners:0@-->, my header ads appear in that spot.

The option for <> 10 locations is unsupported.

Thus it may be confusing, but most users will not try to go over the top 10 anyway. The option allows you, as a perfect insider, to override an inbuilt and suggested value with one you retain necessary no matter what, and since you know what you are doing, the help would not make any sense to you anyway :)

However, if you have a suggestion how to change the advice, I will happily include it into the documentation and user interface.

Ok, I see what probably happened. Having inserted the maximum count you haven't taken in account that the banner locations start from 0, and thus go from 0...(n-1). Since 10 locations are the default, they go from 0...9.

Here we go with testing. If I set 11 postions, I may cover location 10, since that would be perfectly legal. When I later fall back to 10, because I feel I have already enough positions, the side effects begin to show.

1. Set your max locations, e.g. 20: Attachment 130257
2. Setup your template: Attachment 130258
3. Setup a banner
3. Test: Attachment 130259

For me, it worked both for 10 and for 19, and of course with the other banner on top of the map, at position 1 :)

oddmud 06-21-2011 03:06 PM

What does the star (*) mean next to a banner detail in the list of banners? I can't find the answer here or in the .PDF.

EDIT: I'm guessing it mean's expired, but it's still shows them in the "Enabled" list.

EDIT: I'm an idiot.

dmm2020 06-21-2011 04:45 PM

Did you do it in the CMS or blog area? Where it is failing for me is in the blog sidebar, but if I used the default ad manager for vB it comes through just fine.
