RIP Boofo :(

It's sad that "good" people get taken away from us all too early.

RIP Boofo

My condolences to the friends and family of Rob. It is such a shame, he was so young. Cancer is one hell of a fight, and it sounds like he fought it as hard as he could. My mother had cancer a few years ago, and it was rough on all of us. I could only imagine how it was for him and his family, especially since it led to him passing away.

I've chatted with Rob a few times, and he seemed to be such a genuine person. He struck me as a kind of 'matter-of-fact' person who would tell you like it is, often rather bluntly. Which never bothered me; I appreciate people who do not sugarcoat things.

He will surely be missed.

He Will defiantly be remembered and missed, he has help me in a few occasions. If anybody is going to try to fill in , remember he wore Massively huge boots.

But I am certain he would appreciate the attempt

Boofo was a nice and helpful man. This is a sad loss for the community.

peterska2 07-19-2012 03:52 PM

Bob, I'm gonna miss you :( Birthday buddies and many a happy hour spent over the years coding something or other together. A very sad loss indeed :( My thoughts are with your friends and family at this time

-=Leb=- 07-19-2012 06:44 PM

I'm shocked. This is very sad month for us all . Boofo, you will never be forgetting :( I'm sure you are in a better place now.
Rest In Peace

I first spoke to Boofo quite a number of years ago, about code naturally, we were helping eachother with various mods - I was quite new to vB back then.

He also told me a little bit about his service in the military, and that conversation had a lot of impact on me as I had never spoken to a bona-fide veteran before.

Not too long after that I said something stupid and immature, something I'm too ashamed of to repeat here, that caused him to cut ties with me until he PM'ed us out of the blue on this account to discuss a mod conflict. We patched things up and got the conflict resolved, and chatted every now and then since then.

He was a top bloke, I'll always expect to randomly wake up to a message from him regarding some code snippet he's working on.

I'd like to share my favourite poem in his honour: Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star-shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

R.I.P. good sir, you've earned it.

Condolences to his family and friends. What a good man he was. Helpful, funny, sometimes grumpy. I knew that he had health problems from some long chats we had, but not that it was so serious. Very sad.

You will be missed Rob!

Azucar 07-19-2012 07:27 PM

I never had direct contact with him, but I did use some of his mods throughout the years.

RIP.

dlewisr 07-19-2012 08:08 PM

Very sad news. A truly larger than life character, helpful, knowledgeable, witty and always on hand. I won't pretend to have know the fella, but I certainly got to know who he was and it will be strange not to have him around.

Best wishes to his family and his friends too, he will be missed by all. My thoughts are with you.

Gio~Logist 07-19-2012 09:21 PM

I couldn't agree more with Michael. Boofo had the wisdom of an old man with the passion of a geeky teenager for the world wide web. He always had a great sense of humor and the ability to lighten a mood with his wit back in the days when things with get hectic over on the org. He always spoke his mind and was respectful to others. I've spoken to him a few times on IM and here on the org but never had the pleasure of meeting with him. He will be missed nonetheless.

It's hard to put into words the feelings a person has for another.

I spent 5-7 years on-line in instant messenger trouble shooting miles of code and 100's of projects with Bob. He loved to help people. We would chat back and forth like old ladies about everything for hours. His distinctiveness will be missed.

Peace Bob, I'll see ya on the flip side.

klaush 07-20-2012 04:57 AM

I just saw this sad message on the portal!

We will miss you! Rest in peace Rob.

RIP bob. :(

merk_aus 07-22-2012 08:49 PM

Rob was one of these type of blokes that wouldn't spoon feed you when you had an issue. Instead of just telling you the answer he would "guide" you to the answer.

Rob was always kind hearted and would always be willing to assist you if you had an issue, and he sure as hell hated it more than you when his modifications wouldn't work on your website.

I remember there were a couple times when I mis-read what his modification would do and would mention it in the posts and he would always be more than willing to pop up and change some code around to make it work how I had originally thought it would.

This came as a complete shock to me, as it did many, and just wanted to share my thoughts publically in wishing him peace and happiness in death.

DivisionByZero 07-23-2012 11:57 AM

Boofo was a very kind and helpful man who was known to never lose patience with those who asked a lot of questions. He was a great contributor to the vBulletin community in every way.

Footman 07-23-2012 04:16 PM

Very sad news... RIP Boofo :(

R.I.P buddy, may you be at the embrace of angels!

Dean C 07-26-2012 02:14 PM

So sad to hear this news. I don't visit this place anymore, and just happened to stumble across the news on vBulletin.com.

I haven't spoken to Bob in a few years, but we used to speak regularly for a number of years when we both frequented these forums and ended up moderating together in the early days.

RIP Bob.

Bounce 07-26-2012 05:53 PM

Sad to hear this news, I used a few of his add ons and he was always very helpful with everything, my thought go out to his family.

My fav was his /me hack, brilliant and fooled my users one april fools day!

RIP Boofo

vbenhancer 07-26-2012 11:06 PM

Looks like that News brought a lot of the older coders back here... it's a sad reason to do so, but we all did it in a way of respect, thanks guys...

when i came back here 4 months ago, it was because Robert asked me to, as he was asking me to takeover his work... he was aware of his own end, and as we were friends and actual pals, we discussed this and we thought it was a good way to complete the circle... so yes, i'm taking over the development and support of Boofo's work, but in a different way, as i am not in the same situation as he was... our tools are competing in a lot of ways, they will be merged as planned with him... this is for the next autumn, as i am not to rush that part now...

again, everybody, thanks for the thoughts!

DirtRider 07-27-2012 04:21 AM

vbenhancer thanks for doing this as there are a number of us that were friends with Rob and we would really like to see his work continue in his memory

SuperTaz 07-30-2012 12:55 AM

R.I.P. Boofo. Thank you for the few times you helped me out. You will be missed.

Fergal C 07-31-2012 06:45 AM

Boofo has helped me in the past and I use one of his mods on my forum. I just saw this today and was saddened by the news. Life is too short.

RIP Boofo and my sympathies to your friends and family.

XiTCLUB 08-11-2012 10:08 AM

Ohh GOD, its really sad news, he was ar great man, and VB developer too.. :(

TheComputerGuy 08-18-2012 03:03 AM

Bob was a great guy. We used to chat a long time ago. He was going through a divorce unfortunately, when I think vBulletin got him through it. Got him learning code, etc.

Really sad to hear it. He will be missed.

TECK 08-22-2012 09:26 PM

I just learned about this today, truly saddened. RIP Rob, you will be missed for sure.

brtev 08-30-2012 04:52 AM

I was just searching for my details about an Old vbulletin 3.8 mod that I had done in February 2012 by someone and trying to figure who. Saw it was boofo. Then the RIP in his profile. Quick search lead me here.

The last thing he said to me by PM was:
"Well? What do you think of the mod? Do you have any questions? Thank you, Rob"

And I never replied back. Argh!

The mod worked great, man. Thank you so much for getting it done so quickly and seeing my thread. I'm sorry I never told you, but I hope you're in a better place now. :(

AuroraStorm 08-31-2012 02:25 AM

Rest in peace, Boofo...you were well loved...

EvilLS1 12-27-2012 07:12 PM

Sorry to bump this thread but I just stumbled onto it. I had no idea that my buddy had passed away. :(

Bob and I became friends in 2004. We worked on countless hacks together, and at one point I was even his co-admin on a website that he had started (Bear Facts). We had lost touch over the past few years but I had no idea that he had passed away.

Boofo was an awesome guy and this just makes me so sad. We lost a great one for sure.

RIP Buddy.

Von Halen 09-05-2013 07:26 PM

Damn. Just clicked on one of his old PM's to me from 2004, and saw the R.I.P. next to his username. Sorry to see this. Boofo helped me a lot back in '04.
