bada_bing, it may be better for you (or other community members) to simply customize the 'post thanks' mod from Abe1 and make it into a "likes" mod.

Not very hard at all by simply making a "likes" button (as opposed to a "thanks" button) and then changing the phrases that state "thanks" to "likes" and you're set :up:

Yeah guys come on. Do a one off vbulletin mod release, even release as a member rather than a staffer.

In large forums, a list of all who liked a post could easily use a lot of screen real estate.

IMHO it would be better if a liked post only contained eg. "Likes: 23", where forum members, as an option, could click on the number and see a list of of those who liked the post.

Agree - the current placement gives user an impression about liking a user (instead of his message).

In this system after several users it will say "and X other people" so you'll never see dozens or even hundreds of usernames listed no matter how many like it.

Fair enough, but IMO even the current solution asks for too much attention - with only one voter: "The following users liked this post: ****** *******".

"Likes: 1" is more elegant. Or just an icon of some sort, and then "1".

I agree .. the heart can be a bit better. Using a PNG image will give much better results than a Gif one.

Maybe I'm just Old School, but I too can't imagine implementing a "Like" without having a "Dislike" next to it. Facebook notwithstanding, life just isn't like that. We might like pepperoni pizza, be indifferent to cheese pizza, but dislike sausage pizza.

There's no way to express these three basic feelings with only two options - press the Like button or don't.

Maybe these guys at vb.org want to keep this site as much simple as possible.

As I've seen every custom mods on this site only made to make this community better in general, not for someone's hobbies or to make it looks more trendy.

From the beginning, "Mark as installed" function is a greatest way to show your support to developers, the nomination thread for every month is no exception, it makes developers feels that people respect and appreciate their works and keep contribute to this community.

Now we have "Likes system" some kind of "Thanks mod" or whatever, is just another, faster, simplier way for you to show your support to each others (like a useful post, a nice quote, well said..whatever). The goal here is make people get more closer not to get people in a race of who is most loved or most hated person.

So just forget the hate (I don't understand why you have to show someone that you hate them that much by clicking a dislike button when talking and discuss is a much better way), enjoy this great community.

In a new age willy frilly way I believe in positive reinforcement(for the most part), I'll leave it at that.

So you are getting Internet Brands dollars only to switch this forum to vb4? Or are dollars being used for development that will not be handy for community leaders?

It would be convenient if Internet Brands funds 3rd party development as their staff seems to lack the ability to keep vBulletin the highest regarded social media platform available. vb4 and vbMobile are a representation of their current ability, many are upset.


Instead of, what I believe, "using" the vb development community to push a buggy product; Internet Brands should be connecting with the community leaders of vBulletin in order to advance the industry's real goals and stability onto the future. Crowdsourcing and supporting the 3rd party community leaders that are successful is the answer to getting things accomplished that we really care about, with developers that prove their success and ability; it's all on display.

It is depressing to me that Brisco wouldn't support developers like Birds of Prey who have been a solid resource for Community Leaders all over the internet. These are the people who advance the product and provide an innovative, hands on approach, to connecting with the community.

Giving us the ability to strengthen our communities through something simple as a refined like system is what keeps community leaders engaged with....their community. This is what makes us successful, and more likely to be a "White Knight" for vBulletin.


From someone looking on the outside, I see Brisco using vBulletin.org as a resource for community leaders to manage their social platform. I've seen high ranking community leaders get involved with the company (internet brands), but little comes out of it in terms of us having something we can provide to users as a home for their content and discussion.

I see forums as THE social media platform that turns 19yr old kids into entrepreneurs. It is the hub for any specific genre for discussion, yet there is very little ability for your content to be shared to the rest of the world, increasing reach through the platform to other social platforms.

For example, a 3,000 page thread of nothing but Youtube Videos.
For example, a 3,000 page thread of nothing but Images.

There are 3rd party mods, sure, but how are you going to package that content to where people will consume it in a user-friendly fashion? How do I separate it by user? Thread? Subforum? Feed? These social platforms have been unique to the internet ever since the 90s and more people than ever are sharing their content.

Brisco should be funding projects like that, instead of a re-write of vbulletin where the majority of the community is more than disappointed with.

Paul M has been developing mods since I was in diapers... (technically true) he knows what the modding community means to vBulletin. It was said he was brought in to help clear bugs in vBulletin 4... I estimate it will take him at least 2 years before he is CEO and able to make the big decisions that would be of use to the vBulletin.org community. :p

That one stumped me too. I went to Google and a majority of the results for "Brisco" come back with music/rap/etc results

There's a huge overlap between this and the reputation system, but I still think it's interesting to see who 'likes' my posts. Getting into dislike is not worth it.

It would be nice to see AJAX though... I was actually surprised when the page reloaded.

Something like this for vBulletin 4 would be a godsend.

The "thank you" mod has been abandoned by its developer and is no longer supported. To keep it working folks are posting their own hacked versions, and you can't be sure of what you're getting.

I tried the DragonByte Thanks mod, and was really turned off by how it drastically it changes the appearance of posts by doubling the solid bars beneath them.

If someone would make something like this available, it would be so great.

I find that the reputation system is better suited as a game for people to rate an individual poster over time.

For example; The reputation I run is where an individual poster can give you +/- internets once. Reputation comments are then showed in that user's profile anonymously so everyone can read & laugh.

The like system is completely different, because you are rating the post, if you like it, and the possibility of extending it to pull out the best posts per thread in some organizational fashion.

From just thinking about it, I would rather enjoy not only for users to mark a post they "like" but those that are "troll", "offtopic", "thanks" or any other describing word that allows further categorization/recognition. This can also branch off into a conscious system where users are labeling another user not only by their "perceived" persona but the actual content they post.

There are NUMEROUS times where people are asking admins to ban someone, yet those kids are the ones drawing the audience/discussion. Point being, there are many instances where what a user posts is more accepted than their persona; two separate entities.

All good things come to those who wait. :) Its a project for later in the year.

I like the member names displayed but I do see that "The following users liked this post" is really wordy and could be shortened.

when I first saw the heart on a he man site I LOL we have severl buttons and are thinking of expanding, I definatly prefer it over the rep system.

LOL lynne i wasn't talking about vb.org , arboristsite.com (Chainsaw hacks)had this exact same configuration when they first turned on the likes, afterward it changed to a word like but for the first week or so it looked just like this.
