I just added ReChaptcha, banned the known IP addresses and email servers and made it so that a person has to approve them before posting.

No one knows how/where to change the question/answer verification stuff??

I don't know if the spammers have slowed down or what as I don't have any stats on that, but last night I installed the timezone hack and haven't had a spammer register yet! Let's hope that stays in place.

punchbowl 10-02-2008 12:41 PM

Had maybe two spammers join before yesterday. 53 joined yesterday and they were joining just as fast today. Changed to recapcha about an hour ago - seeing how it goes.

Thamelas 10-02-2008 01:13 PM

They seem to have stopped.

Charlie98902 10-02-2008 01:19 PM

They hit my forum for the first time yesterday. I had about 20 new spammers register yesterday and already going 5 today added some stuff to it in hopes this will stop it. If not then I will start not allowing users to use free email addies. If I was to do so would it tell the registered users they need to change theirs?

cmmguy 10-02-2008 01:49 PM

I switched to ADMIN verify on all new registrations and that keeps the forum clean and delays the legitimate new users but it is better than the mess in the forum.

BUT... that last two registration attempts bypassed the ADMIN verify and when straight to email verification. I checked the setting for ADMIN verify and it is still set... Is there a backdoor to bypass that setting?

some are bypassing th security somehow.

Piper0005 10-02-2008 05:20 PM

Wow according to my vbStopForumSpam log I have had over 100 spammers try to register since yesterday. So far its keeping them out.

cheat-master30 10-02-2008 05:24 PM

vBulletin Options > Human Verification Manager > Add New Question.

bluidkiti 10-02-2008 06:07 PM

They have been to my sites today but can't get in. I also upgraded my No Spam mod yesterday to this one https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=183329 . Hadn't had any problems since. Keeping an eye out though.

rbgrn 10-02-2008 07:34 PM

I found out what has happened. XRumer 5.0 was released which supports advanced Captcha defeat including Gmail. I knew it'd happen eventually but it's pretty obnoxious when you have multiple sites that all start getting nailed.

Here's a slashdot article that talks about it. I switched my forums to recaptcha as it doesn't seem to support that at the moment but I think we're in for a serious cat and mouse game. http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/10/02/1415205

punchbowl 10-02-2008 07:41 PM

yeah recapcha worked for me. From that slashdot page "Soon, the only thing that will be able to read a CAPTCHA will be automated spam bots"

lol

tjpeople 10-02-2008 08:47 PM

About 40 spam account last few days.

Aswell as "Man" in the bio they all seem to use an ICQ number, however it varies.

Have turned on reCaptCha hopefully that will help.

XRumer is a Windows program that posts forum spam with the aim of boosting search engine rankings. It has been claimed that the program is able to bypass techniques commonly used by many websites to deter automated spam, such as account registration, CAPTCHAs, and e-mail activation before posting. The program makes heavy use of a database of known open proxies in an attempt to make it more difficult for administrators to block posts.

In addition, the software can avoid the suspicions of forum administrators by first registering to make a post in the form of a question which mentions the spam product ("Where can I get...?"), before registering another account to post a spam link which mentions the product. The side effect of these innocent-looking posts is that helpful forum visitors may Google for the product and themselves post a link to help out, thus bolstering the product's Google stats without falling afoul of forum posting policies.
So the problem is real, isn't not the imagination of a few forum owners but a treat that must be addressed

GSeybold 10-03-2008 05:16 AM

Is there a link on Vb.org to post known and new spammers as they come in. I think this would be helpful to everyone if it doesn't already exist. Would be nice to check it everyday for new items to pre-ban and ward of any new problems ahead of time. Thank you :)

I was also getting them to all my sites that run vbulletin on them. I just finished upgrading them all to the latest VB and setting them up using recaptcha and that seems to have stopped them dead in their tracks for now.

goshalim 10-03-2008 02:01 PM

Last week I updated my VB from 3.6.8 to 3.7.3
In more that 5 day , I had more than 40 spammer and they stated that they are from CHINA.

How can we prevent this ?
Any good solutions ?

jkcerda 10-03-2008 03:14 PM

I still have many trying to register, I shut down regstrations till I plce some of the hacks recommended here:mad:

noppid 10-03-2008 03:16 PM

None of the bots have beaten my Stop the Registration Bots hack on my forums.

We have not had to deal with any spam and we have collected and the spammer's email addresses in the process to feed to the spam agencies.

Have a good weekend folks.

I coded and use Stop the Registration Bots.

No spam has gotten trough and we can collect the offending email addresses for reporting of spamming.

I coded it when a similar problem like this existed and I saw IsBot which was reported as beaten.

I will support it and update it if it's beaten. I already have a couple of new strategies should that occur.

That's in there. It's a note comprised of phrases.

jkcerda 10-04-2008 02:39 AM

changed registration to question/answer, seems to have worked, i wonder how can i have them answer more than 1 question.

g0dfather1984 10-04-2008 04:23 AM

People from China always come to my board. However, not one has succeeding at registering. And since I put up block the time zone differentia modl, I haven't had one on my site all day.

Afterglow86 10-04-2008 10:00 AM

I seem to go through phases with them. I had a time where I wasn't getting any for a few months, now in the past two days I've had about 6 of them. I might take a look at the Q/A registrations as well.

it would be nice to know if you can have then answer more than 1 question

Digital Jedi 10-04-2008 06:20 PM

If you install the NoSpam! modification, you can have one question (no need to make your legitimate registrations jump though hoops) but you can have it rotate through them AND use ReCAPTCHA at the same time. As I mentioned in another thread just a second ago, it's also useful in that you can add multiple questions in bulk, not one at a time. I have quite a few questions now, and I add more every now and again to keep things fresh and the bots guessing.

greenchicken 10-05-2008 05:19 PM

heres a site to block a whole country

jkcerda 10-05-2008 06:20 PM

so far, so good, many are trying to register, i have 2 questions that rotate, one very simple, what is the name of the forum:D, the other related to the industry we cater to:eek:.

seems to have worked so far:)

yaoren 10-06-2008 05:31 PM

Glad to see I'm not the only one going through this, YIKES! Some serious amount of spamming going on. After ready a few comments I've also turned to ReCAPTCHA in hopes to stop this now before it gets too far out of hand for my forum. Although reading on some replies it's already getting there. Hope this helps!

investasee 10-12-2008 05:46 AM

Happened to our forum and we have closed membership and turned ourselves to private forum :)

Registrations only possible by emailing the administrators

moonbase 01-06-2009 05:35 AM

ReCAPTCHA is a savior with this problem.
