pspmaster93 07-24-2008 02:10 AM

UPDATE: I just noticed something i thought id bring to your attention. When i view the archive version of my site it will let guests see unlimited ammount of topics is there a way of stopping it for archive mode aswell or maybe even disable archive mode?

Ted S 07-24-2008 03:53 AM

This addon was not coded to impact the archive although with some hacking you could certainly apply the same logic to it.

Jagsman 08-03-2008 09:30 AM

Is there an update for this for beta 5?

vB 3.7 has long since passed the beta stage... As stated in the addon, this works with the 3.7.x series.

handiyman 08-04-2008 01:41 AM

A great mod and I feel very useful for inactive and people waiting for email confimation. Installed and Nominated.

Welshy2008 08-05-2008 05:46 PM

It sounds like you want a new hack... I would suggest posting to the Mod Request Forum.

juliannova 08-11-2008 01:09 AM

This mod is the bomb! It has doubled my sign ups. I am now trying to figure what # is the tipping point for sign ups? I have it set at 3 it working good. I am not sure about the bots I will post later.

Hi there, i've got this same problem as a couple of posters on here.

I just want to block thread views on 3.7.2 and I have also done the template edit.

If I have thread view block only it does not seem to work.

If I turn on the page block as well then it does work and I get the page block generic error message.

I don't seem to be able to get the thread views error message on it's own.

any ideas from anyone?

You've lost me... this addon stops people from viewing threads in specific forums after a certain number of views, what are you trying to do/ not being able to do with pages?

TimberFloorAu 08-11-2008 10:52 PM

Great little mod, mate.

Havent read every single page, and noticed your readme, mentioned google slurp etc..

Are you aware of any issues regarding spiders?

This is just what we have been looking for !

Good work :)

Thanks for the feedback. All of my comments on spiders are containing in the install file... If there's something specific in that document you'd like clarification on I'd be glad to try and explain but I think that about sums things up.

RobbieZ 08-12-2008 09:31 AM

Hi Ted

Installed but this does not work for me.

it does not show any message after viewing 5 threads and does not block views after 10, both are turned on, and there are no forum variables in the last entry on adminCp

why would it have conflicts with visitor messages 3.7 when these are really only notices.

should i uninstall the 3.7 visitor messages(notices) and re-install the 3.6 visitor messages version?

Hi there Ted, maybe I have got confused but I considered it to have two blocking types.

one with error message when viewing threads which I wanted or another method if a user just views the amount of pages in a forum and not actually viewing the thread details. i must be confused about page block and need to have both options enabled?

I am refering to these two descriptions:-

Register Take-Over Message Count
This option allows you to set the number of threads/ posts a guest may view before receiving seeing the Register Take-Over Message.

Enable Register Block Page
This option allows you to enable or disable the Register Block Page. When enabled, guests will see a message above the posts prompting them to register after they have viewed as many threads as you specify.

Ted S 08-12-2008 03:45 PM

It sounds like you are a bit of, let me explain...

The register take over message doesn't block anything but instead shows a warning message prompting guests to register (or informing them that they can't surf much longer depending on what you customize it to say).

The register block page is a stop page -- once on people can't view threads any longer and must register (or clear cookies) to get around it.

Both messages deal with thread viewing, both at determined by the number of thread views and either one can be used or both.

That make any more sense?

The 3.6 version won't work with 3.7 so downgrading doesn't help. We don't use notices in this addon so that isn't an issue either.

Can you send me the URL to your forum when the system is enabled?

Sorry Ted.. U want me to PM my URL to you ??

*EDIT* When I log out to check that this works.. All my cookies are cleared.. is this a possibility why im not seeing this work ??

Ted S 08-14-2008 06:55 PM

You can post it here or PM me, your preferance.

When you logout you lose your cookies but the LGV cookie will be started up when you visit again as a guest and starts counting down views from that point on.

Javierogo 08-26-2008 09:15 PM

Nice. Thanks!

AzaDiyaR 08-28-2008 11:38 AM

The mod is intentionally built this way... The purpose of the LGV system isn't to stop people from viewing threads entirely but rather to prevent them from doing so easily. There's a lot of ways around any system, IP and database driven ones included and that was not my goal. Furthermore, with the IP system there's a lot of extra queries and load being added which are only necessary for the 0.01% of people who want to avoid registering and take the time to clear cookies to keep browsing for free.

The whole point here is to push people towards signing in/ signing up, not to build a truly unbeatable system.

Your best bet is to try it and find out.

ched999uk 09-17-2008 02:37 PM

This is a great Hack, the previouse owner installed it and its great but I cant get the RSS feeds to work and i was wondering if anyone else had installed the hack and RSS feeds working? I dont think this is the cause but I keep reading that the forum must be open to public viewing and this hack stops that after a number of thread views.

So great hack but does anyone use the hack and RSS feeds?

Cheers

Ted S 09-17-2008 04:22 PM

This addon has no impact on the RSS system, does not change your forum's data or settings and doesn't even know RSS exists. With this addon your site still is open to the public and since no settings change with vBulletin, nothing is there to tell your RSS feeds otherwise. :D

And yes, I use them together on several sites.

ched999uk 09-17-2008 05:05 PM

Ted S thanks very much for your reply. I am very happy to hear that you run your great hack with RSS feeds working. I will have to investigate further to find my problem.
Thanks again for a great hack.

Deimos 10-01-2008 08:26 AM

It definatly does drive up the registration count

From September 1st to 21st, I average anywhere between 1-5 registrations a day
I turned it on for two days, both days had 9 new registrations
Turned it off, it went back down to 2, 3, 5, 6, 2, 3
Turned it on again on September 30th, 13 new registrations.

klyde 10-07-2008 10:47 PM

Hi!

Here it doesn't appear the take-over msg but if i enable the register block page this feature works fine.

I have added $lgvmessage at the end on my navbar template, have enabled the mod and take-over msg option and i haven't excluded any forum (0 at this option)

why doesn't it work correctly to me?

Thanks in advance!!

Btw, it's an awesome mod!

Ted S 10-07-2008 11:08 PM

Double check that $lgvmessage is in all of your modified template styles... sometimes people miss one or two. If it is please PM the url and the number of views it should appear at.

OsideRida06 10-09-2008 10:22 AM

Thanks. I marked this one as installed!

azzaro 10-09-2008 05:35 PM
