Yes I have this installed and don't know how you put content in, also in options, the allow user to add content, does that mean any users can put in content for the whole forum to see or is this just for their own blogs, if it for their own blogs this would be great. Also I tried allowing the user to ad content option to see if I could add content through usercp but when I clicked the link in usercp it went to pretty much a page that showed nothing. Also if I got this to work out one day, I would like that it didn't show the 'your custom content' link if it was disabled (not visible) to users would be great, as it looks like they are missing out on something if says you do not have permission to access this link

Hi guys,

I followed the exact installation instructions explained but I can't get the columns to show. Is anyone having the same problem or knows what's going on?

Here's what I exactly did.
  • Uploaded usc_cp.php to the main forum directory.
  • Went to Manage Products (Add/Import Product) and Imported product-ka_ultimate_sidecolumns_2-0.xml
  • Searched for usc_block templates and added a few rows to some of them
  • Went to Ultimate Side Columns Options and made sure left and right columns were enabled (they were).

I don't know why nothing is showing up. I followed the instructions words by word and have never really had problems installing mods in the past.

kinggori 05-09-2008 10:55 PM

Fixed it! turns out I hadn't changed the header template from vb6.4 and therefore $ad_location[ad_header_end] wasn't there.

Well anyway I hope the steps I posted above can come in handy to people having problems installing this modification.

Thanks Kerry-Anne :-)

I am anxious to install but I was waiting for Gold.

Just doing updates now. It will def work when I'm done although it will work now apart from the custom links section (which won't work anyway due to a bug in version 2.0).

Thanks for the update!

Looking into this for version 2.1

The blank page issue is resolved in version 2.1 (I missed a couple of templates from the XML - oooops). Permissions are being investigated at the moment.

Glad you got it sorted :)

Is there a way to make it so that it does not take up the entire forum home, instead just up to the last forum?

peterska2 05-09-2008 11:36 PM

it can be done using manual template edits but it would require that it is set for forumhome only.

Yea, that's what I am looking to do. Would I manually edit the Forumhome template?

peterska2 05-10-2008 12:13 AM

Yeah :)

Hold off for version 2.1 and I'll make sure I include the manual template edit details in the package this time :)

kinggori 05-10-2008 12:18 AM

The collapsible icon pushes the whole column to the right in Firefox but does not in IE7. It's not a big issue but thought I'd let you know.

You can see what I mean by visiting my forum using Firefox:

Info about version 2.1

Version 2.1 is currently being coded and tested. The following items are being addressed in this version:

Bug Fixes
  • Missing template for custom contents page added
  • Manual template edit instructions added
  • Updates to run smoothly with 3.7.0

Changes to functions
  • The list of pages to display/omit the columns are now checkboxes for easy configuration
  • Usergroup permissions added to set if the usergroup can view the left column, view the right column, and use the custom blocks

eXoOutsider 05-10-2008 12:50 AM

Thank you very much for your help. I voted this for MOTM, by the way.

peterska2 05-10-2008 05:32 AM

USC 2.1 has been released

USC 2.1 Change Log:
Fixed blank page caused by missing template in the XML
Added compatibility with 3.7.0 Stable/Gold
Manual Template Edit instructions added to package
Enhanced the display page choices to allow exact selection of the pages where USC is to be displayed
Added usergroup permissions in addition to the global options for viewing the left column, viewing the right column, and using the custom contents block.

Upgrading from USC 2.0
Upload the contents of the upload folder, except the admincp directory, then import the XML.

Go to vBOptions > USC Options and set the display pages using the new options
Go to Usergroups > Usergroup Manager and set the permissions for each usergroup as desired. By default no permissions are given to any usergroups.

The following new screenshots have been added to the first post:

Nice job on 2.1.

You mentioned before, when trying to make a $photopostfeature code work, to

making the code work in a global plugin with an execution of 5 or less.
Anyone have any idea how to do that?

I'm a little lost with this plugin stuff....

peterska2 05-10-2008 05:52 AM

I can't help with photopost code as I don't have a photopost license so do not have access to their code or their modifications. Sorry!

Scooterpig 05-10-2008 06:03 AM

Thanks for the update Kerry-Anne looks great now and just for your info the new .xml isn't an .xml file, you have it in the zip as a .txt. Easily saved as an .xml but just for your info in case others ask..:)

Also if you do another update down the track, any chance you can add - Select All - for the Display Pages options?...:)

peterska2 05-10-2008 06:08 AM

argh! that's because I noticed a typo when I had exported it and edited it manually. I'll fix it now. Thanks :)

[edit] fixed and new zip uploaded.

docvader 05-10-2008 06:13 AM

Understand. I think, LOL. This plugin stuff throws me.

JBLdesign mentioned above, a similar thing. He wanted to know what "global variables" would work in the side columns. I guess not all of these variables will operate in the UCS areas. (I'm assuming this $photopostfeature code is a variable that doesn't work).

Is there a list somewhere of what we can put in the UCS boxes? I'm currently just using HTML code, and it works great (www.russbo.org/vb/index.php), but has anyone figured out how to put other stuff in here? Like Last Posts, Statistics, Random Photo, etc??? Do we have to change any of the plugin stuff in vbulletin to make this usual forumhome stuff work in the side columns? Again, I apologize for my ignorance; I just don't fully understand the plugin system yet.

You might need a new area just for mods for the UCS columns. :)

Thanks!

Sure, I'll add an all pages too as I know there are a handful of pages that have been missed out. :)

I've got 2.2 planned, it just will need some serious coding to do what I want to do with it so it wasn't put into 2.1. Every time I change something I think of something else. It's taking on a life of it's own now but it is fun coding it especially as I am learning so much while doing it.

I'm not letting on what will be in 2.2 yet though as the chances are that it will change again before I start and morph into something else again by the time I have finished it.

Standard forumhome variables are not global. They would need to be made into plugins in either the global_start or global_complete hook location to allow them to be used.

Things that do come up more than a couple of times are being considered for inclusion in future releases.

If people start making UCS addons then that would be really cool! :D

Anne Lise 05-10-2008 06:50 AM

Thanks a lot for fixing this :)

Wow thank Kerry-Anne it work....;)

dancue 05-10-2008 07:12 PM

The read me file is for 2.0 still. Just thought I'd let you know.

Chadi 05-11-2008 03:24 AM

I just installed this and I'm getting nothing at all showing up on the forum home.

I've done the following
- uploaded files
- imported xml (overwrite)
- enabled forum home right column / edit templates manual in vbulletin options
- manually edited forumhome template accordingly

Now, Out of the 20+ templates USC creates, I'm baffled which one to edit.

The manual edit shows "usc_right", yet not one of the USC templates shows this. I see usc_sidecolumn_right which already has pre-filled content.

shlomot 05-11-2008 03:45 AM

Thanks for great job well done, for being attuned to our needs, and for making our wishes come true.

I see absolutely nothing regarding USC on this in usergroup manager.

Chadi 05-11-2008 11:50 AM

To top it off, after reinstalling this to try again I now get this in vboptions

ShadowOne 05-11-2008 12:14 PM

I'm getting this same error in the options, though it isn't telling me anything useful. I've tried several times, have disabled all plug-ins and am using default 3.7 templates... still get the error and columns aren't showing up on any of the forum pages.

Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Try the 3.6 one...i think its better...doesnt have the ability for users to add their own, buti think its much cleaner....

Thank you for upgrading

slmoney 05-11-2008 04:22 PM

I had the same so unistalled the product from product manager and reinstalled the xml file. then it worked fine.

karnevil 05-11-2008 05:35 PM

I am however ending up with two left columns - identical except one is positioned higher than the other? any ideas?

karnevil 05-11-2008 06:27 PM

Seems to have something to do with this

Code:

<!-- USC header edit start -->
<table width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0">
<tr>
$usc_left
<td valign="top">
<!-- USC header edit end -->

If I change USC Options to ''I'll edit my own templates thanks'' and have this in it works okay.

But if I take that out and change USC Options to ''under navbar and notices'' everything goes squiffy.

Also I have to have the similar part from the footer taken out else my forum expands with the right side bar copied below the page across 100% width.

Sorry I'm not a programmer and am getting a bit lost.

Baldilocks 05-11-2008 08:45 PM

The .zip file is corrupt. At least its showing as empty when I try to extract aything.

Baldilocks 05-11-2008 10:47 PM

I can't get the columns to show up at all.. :( <sigh>
