Yes, TruthElixirX...The Roots are another group but I went with the mainstream. Nice one. :)

@Chris-777: You're basing it off of the recordings in 2 Legit 2 Quit (or other songs off of his album). I'm referring to his live performances. Many rap performances (especially underground) use live musicians. Also, I've met Dr. Dre and have heard quite a bit of stuff that he layed down. While he uses a lot of samples in his songs he also composes. BTW...People who produce music are also considered as Musicians. It's defined.

The time signature of 4/4 is not the rapping but the music that's overlayed. Granted, not all rap music follows that beat structure (and rock too) but I was hoping that you'd get the gist of what I was saying. It's actually much more complicated than what you;ve stated above.

"Turntablism" is much more than scratching; far more. In fact, scratching is just one (small) component of it. The art of scratching dates back to Grandmixer D.S.T (DXT) in the early 80's but it is what it is. "Turntablism" is a newer movement that is similar to orchestrating music in real-time, organized or played sessions (similar to that of jazz sessions).

BTW...Scratching can be done using and over Miles Davis. It has already been done. ;)

For someone who is musically trained you have a narrow view point of the art. My comment is not meant to be sarcastic nor am I speaking down to you. It's comments like "to something I could reasonably produce in a week given the time and the finances" that makes me wonder.

I've had this debate a billion times, so I'm gonna just bow out. However:

It's "defined"? By who? Not me. People who produce music are producers. They aren't musicians.

It's speaking in cadence over a time signature. That's pretty simplistic.

Heh, I'm thinking the same thing about you. ;) Let's agree to disagree. Like I said before, it's all about what you like and what makes you happy. My point is that if you give me a month, I can make a rap album. If I give you a month, you can't make a progressive shred-metal album.

Is that a genre? Progressive shred-metal? :P

THe rap thing has been beated ot death, so lets start something new; over categorizing music.

In metal music alone I can listen to:

Death
Viking
Shred
Speed
Thrash
Metalcore
Classic
Black
etc etc etc

I think this getting out of hand. It seems to be the new trend though. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Not for metal but I'd like to add rap styles such as...

:D

Lets get back to the original intent of the question...do you think any music (rap included) has changed society dramtically such as the Summer of Love in 1967 when rock music and the "drop out" crowd changed the societal landscape permanently?

Gio~Logist 06-01-2006 02:50 AM

lol. This is a typical "You're music is not real music" debate. However, i think you'll find yourself looking real stupid when you ask yourself the following question:

"If his music isn't real music, then why did i just call it his music?"

Enough said. I would post more, however, no need for further controversy.
