Woops, I also can't see them with IE!!

Lea Verou 11-04-2005 04:07 PM

The only thing I can think of right now is that because your forum is fixed with, IE somehow "hides" the images cause they don't fit in the table cells... However the other person that had this problem doesn't have a fixed with website...
I should think about it more... It should be easy to fix...

Lea Verou 11-04-2005 04:17 PM

@Nuclion: I also can't see yours in IE.
I took a look at yor html code and it's different from the one in the template... Have you changed the template? Please re-install the template.

Same with Gizmo5h1t3. The html code is different in you guys than in the other members that don't have the problem. See for example an img tag from Allan's module:

<img src="http://www.phylosophia.com/forum/images/smilies/e-steki_smilie_creator/eyes/6.png" alt="" border="0">

And one from Gizmo5h1t3:
<img src="http://www.gobshites.org/board/images/spacer.png" style="width: 0; height: 0; filter: progid:D
XImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader
(src='http://www.gobshites.org/board/images/smilies/e-steki_smilie_creator/eyes/6.png',
sizingMethod=scale);" alt="" border="0">

Can you see the difference? ;)

Gizmo5h1t3 11-04-2005 05:23 PM

yeah, i see it, so the solution would be???...lol

seriously mate, i hope someone comes up with something here, coz im totally stumped with it...

I have, but I only made a slight change in looks.
Anyway, why don't you try downloading again?
It's really strange, things get added in it for no reason...
Btw do you have windows or linux in your server? I only tested it in mine that has linux...

Gizmo5h1t3 11-04-2005 05:36 PM

windows xp, and i edited my above post....
no change mate, nothing...just a load of dots, as before.....

Gizmo, by any chance do have that that "Transparent PNG files in IE" hack installed?

I was about to ask something like that! It appears that another hack is changing the source code.
Btw these images are 8-bit png files that do not have that problem with IE. The IE problem is only encountered in 24-bit png files. :)

Snake 11-04-2005 07:37 PM

Awesome! That is great! Thanks man.

- We could limit each user to having 5-10 custom smilies stored for their account. If on average every user had 3 smilies, even if 1000 users used the smilie maker it wouldn't be so bad.

- The idea behind having a different smilie panel per user would be due to users probably not wanting to have other peoples' smilies cluttering their edit window.

These are just suggestions, but I think that this modification has a lot of potential. Currently it isn't *really* integrated into vbulletin.

<- like my new "real name" ?

Lea Verou 11-04-2005 11:38 PM

Zachariah I didn't understand what you mean with "* Zachariah cries no <3 U.N.C.L.E. Boofo make her stop.". Is it supposed to be an inside joke?

Btw, currently I'm working on a new version which will include:
1. Random smilie feature
2. Shorter URL
3. BBcode to use custom smilies in posts and an editbox to copy that code from :)

Stay tuned :)

michaelbenson 11-05-2005 06:42 AM

How come whenever i press the Create button nothing actually happens?
I would wait for a minute or so with no avail.

The smiley creator works with Transparent PNG files in IE (server side solution). I've just tested it.

Nice hack :) But are we forced to attach a created smiley to use it in a message ? Can't it be save in the server with telling user the link to get it ?

If you saw my above post, the new version will include new features and one of them will be a bbcode installed via a plugin which would enable the users to use custom smilies in their posts. Also, a link will be displayed in the smilie popup window to the smilie maker so that if the user doesn't find a suitable image there he can just create one and copy the bbcode from the editbox ;)
And since I'll make that plugin I'll also probably add the phrases at this point and make it all a product :)
btw the vba version will be discontinued. There is no point having it as it can be made as a page anyway, with the classic vba way ;)

PS: sorry for my english, I make lots of mistakes when I get too exited :p

cclaerhout 11-05-2005 11:21 AM

Thanks for your quick and complete answer :)

Fun mod, installed!

I tried installing it on my local dev box, but it didn't want to work there, my dev box is a clone of my coloed box so that's strange, because on the online box it works just fine, but not on localhost.

Thanks, this can be endless fun.

Oh just an idea, but if there was an admincp part where we could add our own 'eyes/lips/face' images, imagine the possibillities hehe.

Thanks for your kind words :)
I've seen before that it doesn't work in the localhost, no clue why
You can always replace some of the images with yours. Also if you know how to handle templates you can easily add more eyes/mouths/faces without altering a single thing in the php code or in the javascript. It just needs basic html skills and observation. :)

Lea Verou 11-05-2005 04:17 PM

Guys, I'm quite stuck in the bbcode plugin. When this matter gets sorted out, the new version will be out in a few hours afterwards... ;)
I've done almost everything apart from the BBcode, so I'd appreciate any help with those damned regular expressions :nervous:

For the BB code, make sure that people understand that by generating the image on the fly every time the page loads that their server could take a performance hit if the forum is a high-volume site. That's one of the reasons why I resisted doing that for the sign maker version and instead started exploring ways of saving the image to the server first and then linking to the saved version instead of generating a new one every time. ... For vBa, the original thought process behind that one was to make it easier to manager which usergroups had access to it. :)

Well, I can't save 6000 smilies on the server!
Anyway, how heavy for the server would that be? Especially if I make the browser cache the smilie as someone suggested (not here) :)

KW802, do you by any chance have an idea about my regular expression question? I have a trip tomorrow so if the new version is not teleased in the next 12 hours it will take some days :(

Oh, and if you have created additional eyes/mouths/faces why wouldn't you share so they are in the package for the others? It's a community effort after all :)

KW802 I just tested dynamic smilies in my forum. It seems very ok, no delay at all :)
