my system run through a reseller from theplanet.com they have good rates, $99 for a dedicated system a month. Dual system, 500 gigs bandwidth, 80 gigs space etc. I've never had a down time, cept for ip change.

the tech team I deal with, has been awesome as well. :)

before them I was at rackspace.com, they rock the boat as well however they are 4x more exspensive. And my current box I get all the same level of support but free tech support, where as rackspace for the same stuff was $75 an / 15 mins ... eep

:P

Boofo, you are probably referring to www.rackshack.net which provides unmanaged servers. www.racknine.com provides managed dedicated servers.

In any case, I am no longer with racknine.com but have gone to rackshack.net instead, using their new Dual Xeon 1 terabyte servers. :)

This is what I found on racknine.com's site about dedicated servers. Maybe I'm not understanding it right.

Quote:

Please be aware that very few clients require their own server. Though a dedicated server ensures the maximum level of flexibility for your web presence 99% of websites are much more suited for a RackNine web hosting package as web hosting servers are actively maintained by RackNine technical staff [high]while dedicated servers must be maintained by their respective licensee[/high].

Mmm... they must have changed their policy. When I had my dual PIII server with them, they managed it fully for me. Maybe it wasn't cost-effective for them anymore. Anyway, rackshack.net has better servers for the same price, so go for them, if you are willing to learn how to manage your own servers. :)

Would you be willing to teach an old dog new tricks? ;)

Erwin 05-18-2003 11:26 AM

Managing your own server is heaps of fun. :) I've learnt to set up a firewall, install MRTG, SIM, work CPanel, learn Linux, vii, pico, top, install apache, mysql, php, tweak my.conf, php.ini and httpd.conf, set up my own DNS servers, mail server, chkroot kits, cron jobs, php accelerators, mod_gzip... security stuff like hiding server info...

It's fun to learn... the forums at rackshack.net is a fountain of information. That's where I learnt most of my stuff. :) The main thing with running your own server is SECURITY. Install a firewall straight away, disable Telnet, use only secure logins like SSH, etc.

Sure, if you need help, I am here to help. :) My dual Xeon is flying like the wind, with up to 600 users online with no problems now. :)

Wow, *major bumpage* people always bump threads from months ago at vb.org =/

I'm now at Rackshack and have been for a month, Erwin knows this, as we met on the Rackshack forums :p

Rackshack 0wn. That's all there is to say, for example, look at the price of a Dell Dual Xeon with a 10MBPS unmetered connection...

PixelFx 05-18-2003 01:06 PM

what ever you do make sure you get SSH access, if your on linux ;) I don't know how I lived with out it.

Boofo 05-18-2003 01:25 PM

If I ever even attempted something like a dedicated server, I would have to have help as I know nothing about this kind of stuff. ;)

Chris M 05-18-2003 03:38 PM

Ditto;)

Thats why I am gonna do it in the summer:p

@Erwin - Oh really? I wonder how many vB.org users it can handle;););):p:D:p
