I thought Firefox was already or near the web standard with Firefox 2. Plus Firefox 3 beta has been out a while before IE8 beta was released.

again, Web 2.0 is not a protocol or a standard or compliance, it's a way to navigate, it's a philosophy of viewing the web pages...

CSS3, XHTML2, XML are protocols that require compliance...

like Internet Explorer ALL versions is using 72.41 dpi instead of the other browsers which use 72.0 dpi for displaying pictures on their webpages... 72.0 is a standard for displaying regular flux of images, but Bill Gates twisted it a little in 1992 with his version... because he had a strange Kaypro monitor...

Buzzword or not, I believe it will develop into something more than it is eventually.

so if you download IE8 beta, and you see stuff messed up, don't be scared, just Emulate back to IE7 and restart the browser and you will see everything ok.

No site is compatible with IE8.. Or actually IE 8 is not compatible with any site at this time. Even if you visit some of Microsoft's sites they advise not using IE8. The first "Developer's Preview Beta" is just that a preview. It isn't meant for general browsing purposes. You need to use IE7 emulation mode to actually use the web in the software. It still has a long way to go before its street ready.

As far as "Web 2.0" it is a passing design style. Read the style blogs out there on the Internet. The new look is distressed Grunge, not the glossy look of Web 2.0.
