Equal/Nutrasweet is also unhealthy for the cats.

This isn't true. These chemicals leave residue, sometimes days and weeks. If the dogs and especially cats get in contact with the chemical and clean themselves they will get sick and often die. Plus, the fumes alone can leave harmful affects on any animal for that matter.

Again, gas solutions are the better and safer route.

I checked the website about raid and it said not safe to use if you have pets, so it is a no-go I'm afraid.

Equal/Nutrasweet is also unhealthy for healthy humans to consume. For a proper diet unprocessed sugar is better. Not to say that you'll lick the floor, counter tops, ground or etc., however. :D

There are alternative solutions, peterska2, so don't despair. I give you mega props for being conscious about your cats. There are many people who do not consider the well being of their pets.

:( Google doesn't know of any pet safe ant killers that are available here in the UK. I feel let down that google doesn't know, I've come to rely on him for everything. (Yes, I know, I refer to google like it's a person :p )

Hehe. I'm an MSN user myself. :)

Since the ants are congregating in your kitchen have you considered getting dish washing solutions such as Dawn? It is safe for animals. Vets use Dawn to clean marine life that gets in contact with oil and other harmful chemicals.

Wipe your kitchen (top to bottom) clean with Dawn/water to remove scent and food residue. Any stain or crumb left behind will welcome ants. If you have any food around your countertop place them on a cup and at the bottom of the cup add a plate/dish with some water in it. Ants won't bother with the water. If you have cat food do the same by placing a plate under it and fill it with water.

Seasonal ants do come and go, even in clean houses. If this is an infestation, however, then try the above, clean regularly and go from there. :)

and be happy it isn't roaches :D

Raid may not be safe but it can be used around cats, my buddy have 13 cats not and they still use raid from time to time because they have roaches (it's so bad they come out in the day time!).

I wouldn't use it though, at least not on the floor or anywhere the cat can get to. It's harmful to people aswell, think of it like using glue/paint in a room without proper airflow...it'll get you sick fast.

Freesteyelz 05-29-2006 03:06 AM

Hey Brad, do you have the 2-inch+ flying (bomber) roaches there in NC?

Brad 05-29-2006 04:27 AM

We have them, and the smaller German type. The german type are the only ones you see in houses most of the time, the bigger ones tend to stay outdoors.

Freesteyelz 05-29-2006 05:52 AM

Yeah. We have those too in Hawaii. Nasty little creatures.

Combat Ant Killing Gel works better than anything. You can put it on a 3x5 card and slip it behind something where the cats can't get to it. They will be gone in days. They love the stuff and take it back to their nest. You might see the next generation come get the boddies, but then that's it. GONE
