Agreed. I prefer my modifications merely because I have never installed a third-party modification. No disrespect intended of course, but I do not trust third-party code. That doesn't just go for vBulletin, but it can extend into normal applications and scripts for client-side use like extensions in Firefox. I also generally prefer knowing exactly how something affects my forums rather than knowing it works but not knowing the possible side effects.
I'm also anal as hell about things like code style and design, as you no doubt have guessed. It would irritate the hell out of me to see code suddenly clash with an established style guide. Even when getting examples of Java code from Sun's site and their wacky (lack of) style guide, I use Eclipse to reformat the code blocks before reading them.
Obviously there is high-quality work here, and you'll note that in the golden days of vB2, I released 40-some code modifications here and about that many (maybe more) template modifications at good old vBT, which should now be listed here as well.
However, to satisfy my lameness would require more time analyzing the third-party written code rather than writing it myself.
But I digress. I don't want to get into a big thing here.
