Shoutbox is getting too much lag after one day of install - too many shouts. How do I clear it?

Also, how do I remove the date/time stamp to the left of the username in the shoutbox??

beansbaxter 12-13-2005 04:30 AM

I uninstalled it - too much server load and no way to slow down the unlimited amount of shouts in there.

I'm getting like 1000 shouts a day, I can't delete them one at a time.... and if I can't delet them they're really going to build up fast.

ooops I mean just my case :( others work well :(

mindcry 12-14-2005 10:23 PM

I was wondering about size, speed, and when to prune. My site makes it to about 20k shouts usually witin a couple days depending. I was wondering when was a good point to prune the shoutbox and maybe if there was an automated way to do it.

+1 ..

Bump

TygerTyger 12-15-2005 06:48 AM

Well you can prune it when you think you need to. I do it frequently just as I happen to be passing by, nobody ever looks at the archive or cares that it gets pruned. An automated feature would be nice, yes.

I use it on a shared hosting account, although it's a premium quality hosting account. What did you want to know? It does put my bandwidth up a lot (block search engines from vbshout.php via robots.txt, helps a fair bit) but my server resource use is fine (Dual Xeons though, you might find budget hosts will get upset about things like Shoutboxes).

midnightwalker 12-15-2005 08:27 AM

anyone here support to the posting "in progress error"?

everytime I type unicode message (in vietnamese) it's take forever to load and can't post any message more

Beermonster 12-15-2005 09:38 AM

I'm admin on a doberman forum and they want it to be called a Bark Box where can I change the title of the box? I've looked through the phrases but can't find the right one.

TIA :)

Oh I own my own box so I wasnt too worried about that part of it. Just maybe a slow response from vbshout itself. My members seem to use it as its a chatroom so I didnt know if there was a point where it would just slow down due to a larger database query.

errm.. is there a way to actually _prune_ the history? or do you mean the delete each shout method?

Thanks..

Lenny :)

Man, this is a bummer.. I just looked thru 65 pages . I had to uninstall this. It worked GREAT when it was just the forum mods on the test site, but the day we went live, with only about 25 users, load got so bad that no one could get a page rerfresh...

Yes, I know, there are solutions in the 65 pages here for some of that stuff.. but I just had to uninstall it for now. I have other fish to fry from the upgrade.

@ mainframe - Thanks for the tip. I also saw a post in here somewhere to put it into it's own window... perhaps I will try that too.

But I really think there needs to be some caveats in the top post about possible issues peeps might have rather than make some one read this much to find out they have known issues. just my opine, and we all have one.

Happy Holidays.

Rob Action 12-18-2005 07:14 AM

I know this issue has been posted about in this thread, but I'm going to see if maybe I can still get some help or someone knows something

I understand that people get "Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /vbshout.php on line 288" when they are in a banned group

The shoutbox doesnt load for one of my users. He can view the vbshout.php file when he types it in maually. When he clicks on the link to vbshout.php?do=archive he gets that 288 error

Every other non-banned usergroup user it works fine for

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks :)

Revan 12-18-2005 03:16 PM

Bug:
  • fetch_musername() calls in vbshout.php doesn't pull from the correct Usergroup ID.

It pulls from user.usergroupid when in fact it should pull from user.displaygroupid, in the event of secondary usergroups overriding or adding Username Markup.

Fix:
  • Open ./vbshout.php

    Find (all instances of):
    Code:

    , u.usergroupid
    Add after (all instances):
    Code:

    , u.displaygroupid
    Find (all instances of):
    Code:

    , 'usergroupid');
    Replace (all instances) with:
    Code:

    , 'displaygroupid');

Martin CX 12-18-2005 08:31 PM

Thanks for the fix, Revan. That'll save me literally thousands of error-emails in my inbox.

divided_by_fear 12-18-2005 08:56 PM

thanks Revan

id suggest you double check all template and file edits necessary .. usually the case after upgrading..
if youve tried that .. uninstall and reinstall the product

Clanshosting 12-20-2005 08:58 PM

How do you make it show more shouts on the archive page? I'm on page 107 after one day of it installed.

yellowchaser 12-20-2005 09:27 PM

When you get past a certain number of pages in the archive instead of wrapping the page numbers, it just keeps extending on out until your page is huge in width.. any way to fix this, other than deleting shouts in the archive?

LBSources 12-21-2005 06:58 PM

anyway to stop the shout counting? seems like some members just have to be number one and will hit the [enter] key to whatever it takes to get #1 ..

Thanks..

Lenny :)

Toky0 12-22-2005 12:07 AM

Sorry if this has been asked before. But how do you stop people from using HTML in the shoutbox?

You can turn off "Show Top Shouters" in the Shoutbox Options in your AdminCP... maybe they wont be so inclined to be "number one" if there is no competition.

lol - I did that once too... it wasn't a Shoutbox variable that you need to change, but a global variable in vBulletin in the General Settings, called "Number of Pages Visible in Page Navigator" - if thats set to "0", it will show all the page numbers - mine's set to "5"

Arghh... I was looking at the remnants of our old shoutbox, not vBShout... sorry about that.

LBSources 12-22-2005 12:54 PM

Just upgraded thinking i was out of date and i still dont get that option.. strange..

Kacela 12-22-2005 01:07 PM

If anybody is experiencing an increased server load due to vBShout, we found on our site that it was being caused by the overuse of smilies in the shoutbox - for real! We implemented a new rule telling our users that they can only use one smilie per shout, and so far, so good. There is also an option in vBshout that will let you turn off the smilies for the shoutbox - but it hasn't come to that for us yet. Just thought I'd pass the results of our little experiment along...

LBSources 12-22-2005 01:40 PM

ahh, ok .. thanks for trying :)

wtrk 12-23-2005 02:02 AM

is there any kind of usergroups permissions besides just if guest can see it or not?
