Good Job gamingforce...

Koutaru 07-13-2004 05:07 AM

^_^ it would definately be great if you released it but at the end, it's your decision and your code. If you decide to, no doubt I'll be happy but I won't hold anything against you if you don't. However, I'm sure it'll benefit everyone :p

I would say that the interest for a journalsystem is huge!
So release it if you would like to make a lot of people happy! :D

Please contact if you need a non-english beta-tester! :)

spence2 07-13-2004 10:28 PM

Yes, yes, yes, yes, Gamingforce... 'you need us to wax your car? walk your cat? walk your car or wax your cat??...whatever you need to keep coding! We're all here for you.

Gamingforce 07-14-2004 01:41 PM

I have updated the journal system on my end to version 2.65 :). Here's a copy and paste of the changes from my board.

Changes From Version 2.61:

[ Bug Fix ]
Fixed a bug causing negative numbers in public entry counts when you viewed a journal with private entries.

[ Bug Fix ]
Fixed a bug causing journal information to not appear in profiles even when a user has an active journal.

[ New Feature ]
You can now track which journals you or anyone else comments the most in in a graphical format. To access this feature, go to a user's journal and in the information box towards the top, click the line that says "Cats has made 2101 comments". This feature dynamically builds a 3D pie chart PNG on the fly using some complex functions and the GD library. :)

http://www.gamingforce.com/chocobo/c...-265-cjpie.gif

[ New Feature ]
You can now view buddy entries since your last GFF visit (since you logged out or were inactive for more than 15 minutes). Go to the View Buddy Journal Entries page as normal and select "My Last Visit..." from the pulldown menu. The menu conveniently shows you how long it's been since your last visit.

very well done, gf.. looks very nice and seems to be coming along very well..

Polo 07-14-2004 07:12 PM

looking good gamigforce... keep up the good work ;)

Koutaru 07-15-2004 05:36 AM

;) Maybe release a beta sometime soon?

Updated to Version 2.69

Changes from Version 2.65 (copied and pasted from my community)

[ New Feature ]
ChocoJournal journal pages and buddy entry pages NO LONGER BREAK when one entry is larger than your browser width. Now, only THAT entry will be broken off the screen, not everything. This is a huge update for those of you using large images / large formatting code in your journal. Although it is still not recommended to use huge images in your journal, they will no longer break the rest of the entries! Because this is updated in the Buddy Entries page as well, one buddy will no longer make the rest of your buddy entries fall of the screen.

[ New Feature ]
You can now post new entries anywhere from your browser using one click via ChocoPost! ChocoPost! is an easy way to make a ChocoJournal entry without visiting and loading all the Gamingforce Forums pages. Once you add the ChocoPost! link to your browser's toolbar, creating a new entry will be a click away. Clicking ChocoPost! in your browser links list creates a mini-interface to a new entry page. It's a fast and easy way to post your entry from anywhere, anytime!

To access the instructions for this feature, you can either go to the New Journal Entry page and click the button there, or you can click the following link: http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/journal.php?action=chocoposthelp

http://www.gamingforce.com/chocobo/c...-chocopost.gif

[ New Feature ]
The View Latest Buddy Entries feature has been updated to allow you to view more than one entry per buddy. This is useful if you want to check up on your buddy entries and don't want to miss out on some entries. Previously, the page would only select the newest single entry since the time frame selected. Now, it will select up to 10 if the box is checked. If not, it will display only the one newest one just like before.

http://www.gamingforce.com/chocobo/c...uddyupdate.gif

[ Visible Fix ]
The View Journal (and View All Entries) page has extended journal entry width from 90% of your browser window to 95%. This is to allow more content to be displayed on the screen without scrolling and cause less tables to break with larger images.

nexialys 07-16-2004 09:56 AM

With all these features improvements, will we be surprised to have to pay for this script once its released ?!

i've seen some guys asking for suggestion for some updating process and bring a non-free-anymore script at the end... so i hope this is not... bringing a beta or something that we can test would help to know...

Gamingforce 07-16-2004 11:29 AM

[ New Feature ]
A dynamically generated pie chart is now being served to display who's been commenting in a specific journal. It displays the top 12 commenters, then groups the rest in an "Other Commenters" category.

Yeah, that would totally be a bummer :ermm: but anyways, keep on gamingforce, you are doing a great job... and whatever you end up doing, is up to you.

I'm sure you will choose the best

Ok, this is exactly what I am looking for! IT would look great on my site... PLZ release is ASAP... I don't mind Beta...

I can't wait to see who wins the Journal hack race, LOL. Whoever it is, prepare to be showered with flowers and candy.

spence2 07-17-2004 11:34 AM

Two years...
Total Entries: 30,841
Total Journal Views: 1,392,523
Total Comments: 107,544
Version: 2.69
Total Active Journals: 1617

By most standards, that's quite an extensive beta test.

BTW, for those interested in encouraging a journal hack that seems destined to be released, I'm sure AN-net would appreciate your feedback.

I am sure every hack author or those looking for feedback appreciate encouragement.. So saying something like that in someone elses thread who is working on a hack that is very similar to the one you want everyone to encourage is somewhat rude.. Try and encourage everyone who is doing a hack.. and keep posts/comments like those above to yourself or in a pm.. That only discourages hack authors..

People have a mind of their own.. Allow them to decide which hack they would rather have or encourage..

spence2 07-17-2004 03:38 PM

You will find that I have encouraged this hacker and hack in a previous post, and of course will continue to do so.

If you refer to the original post by Gamingforce, you will see that he wrote that he "might" release this hack. Clearly, that is his decision. I admire his desire for perfection and for excellence.

If you find my post "rude"...so be it. However, since I do not view multiple hacks as competing but rather as co-existent efforts, my intention was to further the support of each in their endeavors.

TRStealth 07-17-2004 07:48 PM

Well, last I spoke to this guy he told me that he will most likely keep it as a GFF (Gamingforce Forums) exlusive, so I wouldn't get my hopes up about this.

AN-net 07-17-2004 08:31 PM

i am glad to see support for my version of this add on but i feel only for the best quality of these hacks to be done is to be patient and not discourage either of us. I also will say this is not a race for anything, i will work on this hack till i find it suitable to my standards and the features in it are is what is needed/wanted. I do hope that gaming force also sees it this way as well. Pleade be patient, as your patience will bring you the best of our works. When both are released there will be a tough decision and you the people will have to choose and i hope you each will choose which ever journal more suitablly(sp?) fits your site and your forums.

Thank you again for your encouragement and please dont make this into a race/battle.

vau7 07-18-2004 05:08 AM

Thumbs up for these wise words.
Don't let it go like the vbPets/ Petzvb.

jamesk 07-18-2004 06:40 PM

I'm really looking forward to seeing this happen. It seems very feature rich. WHoever gets it done first. kudos.

It did seem that I saw a more basic journal for vb3 already released. Can somebody link that here as well. Having difficulties finding it now.

13th_Disciple 07-18-2004 07:45 PM

i think the journal you are refering to is over at http://www.everythingvb.com

Gamingforce 07-30-2004 09:16 AM

Changes From Version 2.69 -> 2.70

(Copied and pasted from my board)

[ New Feature ]
Previously, when you wanted to link someone to a specific entry, you had a link that loaded EVERY entry in your journal causing some long load times for larger journals. Now, the links to individual entries load SINGLE entries! Old links will still work, but all new direct links to entries will now point to this new single entry display.

How do you easily copy the URL to an entry? Check this image below:
http://www.gamingforce.com/chocobo/c...lquicklink.gif

Note that if you link people to a private entry, only your buddies will be able to load it.

[ New Feature ]
The feature that took me many hours tonight to put together is the new Calendar system for journal entries! The Entries Calendar is an easy way to look at entries over months from a calendar perspective and easily bring up entries from a specific date only! It's very cool and required A LOT of clever coding! You can easily jump from month to month using the month selector at the bottom of the calendar. Check out the screenshot for more details.

To access a calendar for any journal, load a journal page and in the top information box, click the link (next to entries) that says "[view entry calendar]".

http://www.gamingforce.com/chocobo/c...lendardemo.gif

Oblivion Knight 07-30-2004 09:52 AM

That calendar feature is very impressive, great work.

TheComputerGuy 07-30-2004 11:23 AM

I agree! Very impressive to say the least!

Ghostsuit 07-30-2004 12:15 PM

Very impressive but since you posted saying your not intending to release it (Pretty sure you deleted the post ;)) I hate the fact you keep teasing us. Still good PR for getting people to join the site to see it :p

Now I'm off to start thinking about how to improve the Journal system thats was at vbEverything.

The Coldwood 07-30-2004 12:20 PM

Looks awesome, you have done a great job!

Gamingforce 07-31-2004 03:28 AM

Oh, I never said I wasn't going to release it. It's still up in the air!

At the very least, I hope my work inspires other people to get new ideas for their journal systems and speed up development.

Ghostsuit 07-31-2004 02:27 PM

Well it's working your inspiring me to expand a little on what I've got currently :)

Gamingforce 08-02-2004 02:27 AM

This is a direct paste from my board:

Closely following the tracks of the ChocoJournal 2.70 released a couple of days ago, ChocoJournal's been updated to version 2.75 with a major feature update! I've realized that other than the 10 Latest Entries listing on the main page, it's hard for less known members to get journal recognition. I was browsing through old entries and noticed that there are a lot of great journals that get little traffic. So I thought, what can I do to allow people to discover new journals? I came up with a bunch of ideas and put it under a new feature called ChocoJournal Discovery!

Changes From Version 2.70 (2.70 -> 2.75)

[ New Feature ]
ChocoJournal Discovery is a collection of (currently) 3 tools that allow you to discover new journals. It can be accessed by the graphic on the main Journal page.

http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/images/jd-keyword.gif

Discover By Keywords is a natural language search engine that searches through tens of thousands of journal entries and then ranks the results in real time by relevancy scores. Because it is natural language and not exact phrase matching, you can type stuff like "I love going to to the beach in the summer." and it will bring journals that most match that sentence. Explaining how it works exactly is pretty complex, but the algorithm that matches your query works pretty well. How do I know? I did a search for "masturbate" and Jessykin's journal appears as the first result with her relevancy score of 32(much higher than second place which has 6) . Use this to find new journals by typing in stuff of similar interest. Maybe you'll find a few new journals and make a few new buddies!

http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/images/jd-music.gif

The similar music interests feature is much simpler in that it looks only in the stuff entered into the "Now Playing" section to find people who like the bands / type of music you do. It's not going to solve world peace, but having one thing in common is better than having nothing in common. The search engine automatically strips out "the" out of any band name and does exact phrase partial matching. Type use into the engine will match stuff like Muse and Fuse. Journals that have the highest number of entries that match your query will be listed on top.

http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/images/jd-active.gif

The Active Journals feature lists the 20 most active journals. Active being, the amount of comments a journal has received in the past 24 hours. It's amazing from a technical look because it gets the entire list with just one query to the database server. If you know any SQL, here's the query that I'm using to get this information:

Code:

SELECT journal.userid,user.username,COUNT(journaldiscussion.commentid) AS count FROM journal LEFT JOIN journaldiscussion USING (entryid) LEFT JOIN user ON (journal.userid=user.userid) WHERE journaldiscussion.dateline > (UNIX_TIMESTAMP() - (86400 * $dayrange)) GROUP BY journal.userid ORDER BY count DESC LIMIT 20
It's amazing how flexible database servers are, but most of you are probably falling asleep by all this technical garbage. The entire goal of this new feature is to help people find new journals and ultimately, new buddies. I think the keyword feature is more real than something like Match.com because it looks through content that you've written about yourself, not some static profile that you decide to come up with on any given day. Let me know if there are any other discovery methods I can add to the discover page or if there is any way I can optimise these results.

[ Feature Update ]
The comment and entry search engines now link directly to single posts rather than the entire page.

[ Bug Fix ]
Fixed a bug in the comment search engine that resulted in occasional duplicate search results.

AN-net 08-02-2004 02:50 AM

not to be a party crasher:( but isnt natural language matching only available in certain versions of mysql, i think its 4.1.1 and up maybe>_> i just wanted to bring this up incase others may not have mysql at that version but i really love the idea of using the match function;)

How about allowing the journal owner to select a category for his/her entry? The categories would be different for every site, but would correspond to the major topics found in the boards. For example, in my health community the categories would include specific diseases.

This would allow a function to be built to browse journal entries by category.

how about releasing the dang thing instead of teasing us :nervous:
