i remember Lesane saying he would build something like this, if we all chipped in!

Zilvia 03-26-2004 05:02 AM

I know a few people including myself that would be willing to pay.

oly51 03-26-2004 09:35 AM

Add me to that list.......

Hoffi 03-27-2004 08:46 AM

I have this: http://www.calibra.de/forum/gallery.php

I must fix some Bugs. If I upgrade to Gold and it works, I will release this.

glo 03-27-2004 08:52 AM

Hi Hoffi,

Couldnt open it just now! (edit: I can get in now...)

Do you have that for vb2.3.x? Alot of users are still using 2.3.x and waiting till more hacks become available on vb3 beofre switching.

Its really great.

On the webpage you find some examples and there are alreayd vb3 boards using it.

Quiet expansive isnt it?

eob 03-29-2004 01:23 PM

I've designed one of these for YaBB with the aid of another guy doing the hardcore programming, if there's a VB expert out there, I'd be willing to create a CSS based template, the images, some of the code, and the English language file if someone wants to get on board with this and get cracking.

PS. My old garage is at: http://vgarage.eamonnobrien.com

DigitalEclipse 03-31-2004 03:09 PM

This is a great idea. Another message board I post on, a non-vb website has this. its an Invision board. here is the link to their garage: http://www.2gstratus.org/forums/index.php?act=Garage

I dont know if you can view it without being registered.

rockergrrl 03-31-2004 05:53 PM

I would love this for a board that I'm working on (yes, a chick with a car board ;) ) !!

gibgib 04-03-2004 10:34 AM

Yes perfect!!!!

Please save me from having to constantly update this:
http://www.aussiefrogs.com/gallery/usergallery.htm

An extension of the user profile page with the ability for the member to be able to update all info (some fixed drop downs & character text fields) & upload/ update 4 or so images themselves would be great.
All this with a search feature so others can enter a make & model & bring up members with that car.

Revision. So far we have:

corsacrazy
oly51
Optima
alkatraz
Zilvia
BfB
glo
iamwhitey
Envy-UK
Datenpapst
rockergrrl

& now gibgib

wanting/ requesting a very similar in description hack.

If we all were to pay the developer US$20 for a suitable hack, that would translate to $240 into a pay pal account.
Would this suffice a developer?
& is $20 a fair price to pay?

I am upgrading to 3.0.0 gold, currently .7 beta..

ImportPassion 04-03-2004 12:35 PM

i am interested too!

djnoz 04-04-2004 10:10 PM

Hmm.. I'm writing a gallery system for vB3 at the moment, and this definately looks like a potential add-on for it. If I get the time, I might give this challenge a go... :P

eob 04-05-2004 12:38 PM

One of the guys mentioned that the hack (by Hoffi) over @ calibra.de was up for grabs? It works with VB3 too.. any ideas ppl?

magnus 04-07-2004 02:07 AM

Well, just thought I would give you all an update:

vBGarage3 is coming along well! In fact, I'm shooting for a pre-release this weekend if all goes well. So far, it's pretty basic. It's more or less the same thing vBGarage2 for vB2 was, for now (for those who remember vBGarage2 before it was 'yanked' by the vB.org staff). vBGarage3 is a complete 100% rewrite from the ground up. It's quick, and seemingly stable so far. :)

I'm really sorry it's taken so long to get out, but I've been swamped with work these past couple of months, so I haven't had the time to really dedicate to this like I had hoped.

In any event, at the very least I'll try to get some screenshots up before the weekend.

Don't worry guys, it's coming. :)

Dj22 04-07-2004 06:10 AM

i would kill my mother for this hack :o

i cant wait to see it magnus.. if only i had some php skills to help out :(

Envy-UK 04-07-2004 08:34 AM

That's great news, Magnus.

If you're looking for any help along the way, feel free to get in touch.

oly51 04-07-2004 09:26 AM

Cool!!!

ImportPassion 04-07-2004 10:09 AM

can you give us a few comments about what it will be able to do?

gibgib 04-07-2004 10:49 AM

magnus, good stuff.

I'm serious about the 20 bucks too if your hack fullfills the job
I can beta test on my test forum if it helps it's development.

eob 04-07-2004 11:02 AM

I think Hoffi is threatening to release his in the near future too. The thing is, that this hack could work for almost anything.. jetskis, motorbikes, dogs, you name it, so you'll have a lot more takers than you think!

Wonder who'll release it first ;D

magnus 04-07-2004 07:59 PM

Hey, if Hoffi get's his out first, good for him. I don't see releasing hacks as a 'competition', lol.

In any event, the soon-to-be-released version will contain:

* The ability for a user to upload an admin-defined amount of photos
* Either the ability to input vBCode text, sort of a "psuedo-webpage" deal or to build a generic page by "filling in the blanks" per se, which can be defined by the admin. I haven't really decided which way to go yet.
* Ease of access, http://url/vbgarage.php?userid={x}
* User control panel. User can add/remove photos at any time, as well as change/update text.
* Usergroup control. Can deny/grant access for specific usergroups.

This version will NOT contain GD or Imagemagick support. Future versions might, though. All files are stored in the SQL database.

If you guys have any ideas, let's hear them. :)

Envy-UK 04-07-2004 09:46 PM

Magnus,

It looks to me as if you have everything covered that I'm personally looking for.

If you need me to test the hack, I'll gladly do so.

Two comments/questions, Magnus:
Can members enter vehicle data for several cars?
Will an admin/mod be able to add vehicle data for non-members cars? (or be able to approve data submitted by non-members)

At the moment, this version only supports 1 car per user. I can work on making it for multiple cars though, shouldn't be too hard.

Garage moderation is planned for release, but not with this version. This initial version is pretty stripped down in term of Admin features. I have a whole moderation queue system planned for the next release. :)

Attached are screenshots, as promised. I've included the end user view, and the user edit page. Let's hear what you think. :)

I'm thinking I may need a couple beta testers. I'm looking to get a beta version out tomorrow, to see how it holds up on another forum. I see a few people were interested. If you're still interested, shoot me a PM. I'd like to try and get forums with large userbases. Preferably with 100 or so active users, so they can beat on it to death.

gibgib 04-08-2004 10:38 AM

Looks really great!

With your subsequent releases, do you think they will be upgradable upon the version you are about to release so users don't have to re-enter everything again?
It seems your future releases will have very useful features.

I'll send you a PM about beta testing :)

Skipsoutdoors 04-08-2004 01:07 PM

I for one will be glad when you get your hack done. I was one of the lucky ones who downloaded the one for vB2 before they canned it for whatever reason. I've been using it as a trophy room on a hunting and fishing web site. It seems to work great for that. Admittedly, we haven't advertised it much due to saving bandwidth, but it does do what I want it to do.

Some things that would be nice would be a wholesale way to make it available to members. For example, I want to allow members with a minimum of 50 posts have a trophy room with maybe 5 pictures. Members with 100 posts would get an additional 5 or so pictures in theirs. It can be done now, but it has to be done on an individual basis and is time consuming. Maybe there's some way to set a conditional to give access???

One other minor thing is the part that's in the registration form that asks for their car make and model and such. I really don't want that information there. I've half heartedly tried to find it and change it to trophy type and stats like Deer- 8 pointer -200 lb.

This hack and Logican's Web templates are my 2 hold ups from switching to vB3. The others, I can live with or without.

eob 04-08-2004 02:01 PM

I haven't migrated to my new site yet from YaBB, but I should be doing at the end of this month, and then I can test any Garage hack that comes out. With your hack, I think it's suitable to almost anything, like Skip mentions, fishing etc. What a lot of the 'Garage' orientated people will be looking for, will be a set list of data per car, eg:

BHP: [formfield]
Weight: [formfield]

..etc. This also means that it's very easy to compare the different vehicles stored, ie, draw up a garage homepage and print up the top ten cars, or fastest, or lightest, etc.

There's also the fact that, as knowledgeable about cars as my members are, they know nothing about VB code, so they would find it hard to build a page about their cars that way.

Nonetheless, awesome hack! You'll find a lot of takers for this!

magnus has indicated that user group control can be used with his/ her first release. You could tweak vb garage to work with your criteria using the usergroups already built into vbulletin.
I will also only allow the "regulars" to take up space on the server, 50 posts & at least a few months of rego.

magnus 04-09-2004 05:31 PM

Well guys, I've got good news and I've got bad news..

The bad news is, I'm not going to be releasing a beta. The good news is, I'm just going to go ahead and release it to the public. :)

Enjoy!
