i dont like the look of vb3 i prefer 2.29 tba
You do know that it's been said over a thousand times that the style there isn't the final one, right?

Erwin 06-12-2003 02:51 AM

Friday, here we come!

And I have an exam this weekend too!!! :(

Xenon 06-12-2003 04:55 AM

Rose, i just meant you sounded as excited as a girl before her real first practical experience in sexual things ;)
it's nice to see someone can be as excited :)

oh part two:
You know Mark Twain:
"There is nothing more awful to see, than an young pessimistic.
Except an old optimistic"
(I don't know the exact quote, as i have retransletet it from the german translation ;))

@ Chris : I don't know exactly ... but I only will discover vb3 on saturday (wednesday, I'll go out in Belgium :-/ )

I think the first thing I'll do is, first of all, to look at the new code used for vb3, understand good how it works ... and then to convert some of my hacks from vb2 to vb3 ... and after I'll see if I have good hacks ideas :)

trafix 06-12-2003 06:33 AM

Erwin .... i presume that they are talking firday their time which means that we will get it on Saturday..... lol .... You realise that we will have to wait a bit longer

insanctus 06-12-2003 06:37 AM

I would have been excited over this if it would have come out before all the hacks I added in.

All those little goodies users and admin get used to playing with daily.

I plan do download vb3 then install it on a test section. Once all hacks back in then I will convert over.

Erwin 06-12-2003 07:17 AM

Yeah, Saturday. LOL! :)

Erwin 06-12-2003 07:18 AM

I merged both the vB3 threads - please keep discussion to this one thread. :)

Dean C 06-12-2003 08:46 AM

I'm not excited either. vb3 for me will signal a lot of problems. Many other surrounding boards in the same genre as my board will upgrade as they are barely hacked and want to jump on the vb3 bandwaggon. Then there's me with my feature-packed and custom-hacked board that is going to have to wait for all the hacks to be ported over... only thing that excites me right now is the thought of getting waster all summer after i finish my exams ;)

As we decided together with the devs:

It is a BETA release. Also if it's for public it's beta, so there won't be official hack support on vb.org until it's in RC state.
No vb3 hacks will be released here during this beta stage.

does this mean that any hacks created/converted for VB3 Beta cannot be posted on this site so we can all try them out ?

if not, anyone plan to set something up so hack can be released to us ?

i know beta is beta and changes can come fast, but there should still be a place for us to get them even if they are not supported ?

lets wait and find out :0

@supernut: it's the wish of the developers that they could get real beta related bugs and not hack releated bugreports.
That's why we decided not to allow hack posting of vb3 hacks while it's in Beta stage.
The vb3 hacking forums will be opened in the second the first RC can be downloaded but no second before

i never ment anything bad from my comments, but as your not going to allow any VB3 Hacks posted until RC release, i am just wondering if someone is going set something up until then so people that do want to install hacks onto a beta version can

Xenon 06-12-2003 05:10 PM

i never intended you meant anything bad :)

as for your question: i haven't heard of one.
there won't be (of course) any official hack sites for vb3 beta hacks, and i think most good hackers won't make the live of the devs harder than it is, so i think everyone will just prepare it's hack and wait until vb3 goes rc :)

Chris M 06-12-2003 05:28 PM

Too right too;)

It's bad enough for poor old John and co when they get bug reports for vB2 when hacks have caused the problems - Let them be, and let vB3 reach RC before hacking becomes an element;)

i know its abit of one of those things last on there list, but i would maybe finish up a few of the images for the defualt vb3 style before giving it out.. me i dont mind im gonna see what kinda style i can make with it from the box, will make my own images etc, but what about folk who are anxious to upgrade ?

DrkFusion 06-13-2003 01:52 AM

I am excited, coming from a Phpbb background, transitioning to VB (with a bit of oral advice :p) its members and vB has progressed alot, and vB3 will be a new landmark that will be placed in the centre of the village that will mark the history of vB and its members, its progress, its achievements and much more. The release of vB3 in my opinion has much significance.

Lets all hope the vB3 release is a smooth one, their servers for sure will be loaded with users trying to download, maybe some of us won't even get a chance to download it this month, if all their bandwidth runs out :p

N!ck 06-13-2003 02:04 AM

I'm sure they host their own site.

Erwin 06-13-2003 02:43 AM

Another reason why we do not want to release vB3 Beta hacks, and prefer to wait till at least vB3 RC.

A post by DJE on vB.com which explains it well:

Quote:

in vb2, all the text is directly in the templates, and to translate the forum, you have to edit each and every template manually.

in vb3, the developpers thought it might be easier to develop a "language system". This system is pretty simple. In the admin CP of the forum, you'll have a bunch of words and phrases that you will be able to translate, without relation to where they appear on the forum (stuff such as "Edit", "View", "Send a P.M.", etc.) These tidbits of text will be used through all the templates, using php code. So if you translate "View" in the admin CP, it will translate it everywhere in the templates where the php code linked to "View" is.

but now there is a catch: since the style has not been developped yet for vb3, the old vb2 templates are still used for the beta, which means that they still contain all the text directly instead of the php code that works with the language system. editing those templates would be useless, as they will be modified for the gold release. However, translating the stuff in the "language system" in the admin CP is usefull, cause this stuff will be used in the final style. So you can start translating this stuff right away, and when the gold is released, all you will have to do is translate the new words/phrases added to the language system that were not added already.

Hope this helps you understand the difference between the language system and the templates
As you can see, the templates are still hardcoded in vB3 Beta, which uses the ugly template being used at vB.com. The "real" language system (which is revolutionary) will not truly be working until vB3 RC. At least that is my understanding. So don't be too quick to hack the Beta - best wait for RC. :)

Absolutely no where did we say that there would be a release at midnight or 9am or any other specific time.

A release will be made today but we have no set time that I can tell you just now!

This has probably been discussed a thousand times before, but with all the crazy vb3 talk I'm having a hard time lately filtering out the good stuff.

Is there a thread or document on the methods used for converting over a hack?

I have a custom made hack that a guy built for me. Very small, but unique and necessary to my site. At the very least I want to start playing around to find what it will take on my part to get it to work with vb3 (even in beta)

I'm assuming there are a few major change necessary to each hack, then probably minor things to watch for (db changes, etc.)

Could someone point me in that general direction? Much appreciated.
