How does one get a "throwaway" number?

blind-eddie 08-17-2006 06:20 PM

This is kinda funny,..I run 2 Americas Army Servers and 1 BF2 Server, I was at work when my cell phone rang , on the line was an Aussie Gentlemen , telling me he was just kicked off one of my servers.I laughed. He says, wth you laughing at, do you know who I am, you don't mess with ppl like me...I laughed harder....By this time this guy was irate. And I was lmao....I said my piece of course.....I to had know idea when I rented my web space that all my info would be displayed publicly. Since then I changed my cell number. He then started sending me emails....alot....Spamming my site like crazy.....I have banned so many emails and ip's on this guy ...And mind you this is all over being kicked from a "game" server.......lol...Gotta go someones at my door....

Protoman 08-17-2006 10:03 PM

I've had people call up my house to insult me for getting banned. As if trolling my site wasn't enough they feel they need to troll my phoneline.. I just switch numbers frequently.

Ntfu2 08-18-2006 12:18 AM

I put my real information down. but i'm hard core like that and dont reccommend anyone do it. Plus i get bored...alot and can only hope for the day someone calls me..hell i'd settle for a email at this point

that and the stupid SSL cert required it

Skype. :) You can buy a number for 3 months at a time.

pds 08-20-2006 03:12 AM

Wack jobs...they are everywhere. I have had numerous threatening emails from banned members. Thank goodness for Miserable Users, you can time out them to death and they just go away. (Of course then I ban them! :D )

Humbe 08-20-2006 03:49 AM

What do you mean by member calls?

mholtum 08-20-2006 04:32 AM

I run a weapons forum. I have never received any calls. Go figure.

AcidX 08-20-2006 11:32 AM

All the time.
Banned users, users having problems logging in... I had a several threats too.
It's not easy running a large forum.

cmartin 08-21-2006 02:46 PM

Nope, I've never had a member call my house. :) The thought, however, is extremely freaky.

thats so god dam funny. if that happened to me I would freak out.

Well I'm quite lucky in that respect as when I bought my domain the server I'm with register it in there name instead. And when you do a WhoIs is shows there address and not mine. Which is cool really.

wtricks 08-24-2006 05:31 PM

Well, hopefully I don't have my members do this. This is mostly because we're from all parts of the world, so I think an international call is not quite something they'd have in mind :D

MentaL 08-26-2006 07:10 PM

This is no word of a lie...

I run a site which is popular, lots of members, lots of kids, lots of hackers, now, it comes a time where they threaten to ddos my servers, (i own three of them) anyways, i get emails and so forth threatening me if i do do this or that , they will flood.. now, allot of these people tend to forget that i can follow their ip and email.. so here is one example.

during a ddos attack one day, i had an email from a member stating along the lines of "you got owned, bla, french own u"... to my surpise, i figured i would google his email, and what do you know, it returns to a websites contact page.. oh he owns a webpage ;)!!

I do a whois on the webpage, get the phone number, i asume its a fake but i call the person, mension who i am, where i am from, and bla bla bla, this french person says sorry, and guess what, DDOS stops.

^__^

As a forum owner you are the FIRST person someone will attempt to call if there is an issue the callers deems needs personalized attention, GET OVER IT. I am not being mean, I am telling you the way of the world. We are basically Business owners, well, me may not make money but we certainly do take risks puting all our info out there for the world to see.
If you are afraid of what could happen you should burn your computer equipment an purchase a whole lot of tin cans and string and HOPE someone hasn't created a hack to intercept TinCANstring Transmissions...
If someone goes to all the trouble to seek you out there are probably 2 different scenarios, 1- The person has no clue 2- There are some legitimate issues that need to be resolved, A or B (you decide what that is). If the individual OR GROUP has the tenacity AND the presence of mind to find your details perhaps they need a listen? You might be surprisedwhat a little, "OK, I understand, let me look into it nd resolve it" will do for a disgruntled member.
Hiding makes you look like an accessory and will oly infuriate.
How do I know all this? Tha's easy, BECAUSE I OWN A FORUM! LOL!
