Well, 2 months later and I still haven't done anything with the name. I'm wondering, is anyone interested in buying www.vbulletin.net from me? If you're interested, PM me or e-mail me at dejaray@shaw.ca - I might put it up on eBay if I get enough interest, since I don't have the desire to build anything on it anymore and I don't like to see it go to waste. It would make a nice templates site to go with vb.com and vb.org ;)

Neo 01-21-2003 11:38 PM

I just emailed / PMed you.

nuno 01-22-2003 12:34 AM

What about selling it to Jelsoft?
[high]* nuno thinks you should email John :p[/high]

Erwin 01-22-2003 01:54 AM

vBulletin probably has trademark rights to that domain name in any case... if they decide they want the domain, they will be able to get it since vBulletin is a commercial product... this is based on past and recent WIPO decisions...

http://arbiter.wipo.int/domains/

Boofo 01-22-2003 02:08 AM

Having trademark rights to the name and having it to the domain name are two different things. I think they will have a harder time getting it if they want it than you think they will. I know of a site that used a trademarked name with NET instead of COM and when the COM site tried to stop it, they couldn't even though the name was trademarked. It gets real touchy and confusing with domain names.

SkuZZy 01-22-2003 02:45 AM

I don't think John has any intentions to pursue action against anyone using his "trademark" in domain names unless they are using it to slander his company. Of course, this is just my educated opinion. Seeing as there are many vbulletin domains out there (vbulletinboard.com, vbulletin.org, vbulletinskins.com, ect.) in use, I don't see why John would have motivation to go after this domain name; especially if it was being used to help increase his sales. A community offering free templates and button sets to vbulletin members provides a whole new set of features to attract new customers to the vbulletin software. This is why I want to possibly sell the name, cause right now it's not doing any good with me not having time to develop it ;)

... of course, everything said above is just my opinion. No guarentees that John wouldn't suddenly decide to go after it, but i'd like it if anyone could give me any motive as to why he would out of the blue decide to do that after the domain has been registered for over a year and a half.

SkuZZy 01-22-2003 03:19 AM

I've decided to post this on ebay (infact, I already have). It will start tommorow at 6:45pm PST on ebay and end on Monday, January 27th @ 6:45pm. I will post the URL here tommorow. There is no reserve and whatever it sells for, it sells for..... I mainly just want to see it become a big big site like vb.org ;)

Tony G 01-22-2003 10:22 AM

Official-ness would be the key to more success. :D

Xenon 01-22-2003 11:19 AM

@Erwin and Boofo: It depends on the rigth of the country also.
For example the domain vbulletin.de is not in the hands of jelsoft, it just links to vb.com, but if jelsoft would want the domain, the courts would give it to them, because it's german law here, but for .net its a bit mor complicatet..

Dean C 01-22-2003 03:15 PM

You should post this up on vbulletin.com ;)

I will once it's up on ebay, but I think the vb.com rules are pretty clear on selling stuff on their forums, so I don't think this would be any different.

Dean C 01-22-2003 05:43 PM

I mean put it in the sitefeedback forum or email one of the big dogs there :)

SkuZZy 01-22-2003 06:12 PM

Once it's on ebay, i'll shoot an e-mail to chris and john, but I don't think they will care much or be interested in buying it themselves (why would they?). I e-mailed John before asking him if he cared whether or not I used the domain and I didn't get a response.

Dean C 01-22-2003 07:00 PM

Well just let them know and you can see what they say :)

Neo 01-22-2003 07:01 PM

Thats John for you.

filburt1 01-22-2003 09:22 PM

I e-mailed him a couple months ago about a suggestion in changing how authenticating users as licensed in vB.org/vB.com, and never heard back. Surprised too considering it's supposed to be against pirates

Neo 01-22-2003 09:32 PM

As did I like a year ago. But I figured we arnt able to due that since once we know we can hack it and then be able to manipulate all the members info.. so yeah..

sabret00the 01-22-2003 10:31 PM

ok well on a serious note, someone mentioned vb.tv well i do ineedy think vb is big enough to have a mag, in england football teams have em and and so do certain computer games, yes games not the consoles, including one offs of new release mags which everyeone goes rushing to buy, it could be a hit to be honest, think about it vB

on a less serious not

vb.ew (get it vb.ewwwwwww for ppl for prefer phpBB)

/me rolls around the floor laughing at his own joke

SkuZZy 01-23-2003 12:53 AM

BID.

Erwin 01-23-2003 02:03 AM

We usually will not allow links to ebay auctions here, as it is considered self-promotion... but since you're a regular here SkuZZy we'll let you do this. :) But for the record, we don't usually allow links to ebay auctions here.

mheinemann 01-23-2003 10:47 PM

Wow, $265.00 already and still 4 days left.

Chris Gwynne 01-23-2003 11:22 PM

Yeah, rich +++++! :p

Neo 01-24-2003 12:14 AM

*kicks a-drive in the nuts*

Chris Gwynne 01-24-2003 02:39 AM

...Was the wrong idea selling it this way, it seems rather than just giving the domain to someone for cheap or to someone who would use it well, you're just in for the money of it.

Tony G 01-24-2003 08:50 AM

Woah, thats going for alot of money. Guess it was expected.

Xenon 01-24-2003 11:22 AM

well, i'm really intrested what the buyer will do with the domain :)

Tony G 01-24-2003 11:38 AM

Well something useful I hope considering the amount of money being spent.

Ummm do you have a problem or some kind of prejudice against me Boofo :(?

nuno 01-24-2003 05:49 PM

Since Mist is a regular user and a vB owner, i guess he is trustable.
Or am i wrong?

Erwin 01-24-2003 10:47 PM

Like I said, vBulletin.net is so clearly within the trademarked domain of Jelsoft, that if someone decides to abuse that domain name, Jelsoft will be able to retrieve the domain with no problems.

colicab-d 01-24-2003 11:03 PM

anysite with that pointing to it cant help but do well! id pay the $280 a month for it lol but im against false advertising lol

I don't see how you figure. I know that me putting it on ebay has turned it into a "Whoever has the most money gets it" type of thing, but how else would I sell it? I mean, I got about 20 emails from tons of different people who all say they want the name and I don't doubt that most of them would put it to good use, but how am I supposed to decide between that? I'm not going to deny that i'm in it partially for the money though, but would I rather sell it to an evil person for $500 or a nice person for $400? Probably the 2nd one... but unfortunately, that's not easy to decide without getting to know someone first and especially on ebay... I also have another domain name I am buying with the money earned from vbulletin.net, which hopefully I get more of a chance to develop. It's the never ending circle of domain swapping... It's not like i'm just dieing with greed though, the money from this domain name will help me build my new business and fix my car.

Marzas 01-24-2003 11:20 PM

Well there point on getting the domain is so people can be curious and go there, hope they mihgt register, dont you see, with us speacking about the site, thats the whole point of them buying the domain, lol. or mabye there just greedy trolls
