Great hack thanks.

I would like to display the Karma in the postbits for everyone to see who has what but I can't work out how to get it to display.

I use VBportals as well.

Can anyone advise.

squawell 02-08-2002 09:16 PM

nice hack  but seems can't work to me:(

i test it on my localhost and it show up this message

see the pic~

i need someone tell me what's wrong??

SaintDog 02-08-2002 09:18 PM

You will have to test on it on your actual board or install vBulletin in another directory and install it there at this time on your website because it will not install on your localhost (already tried it).

sleepbirdcyp 02-08-2002 10:40 PM

after installed this hack on my forum (VBB 2.0.1)

everything goes fine on Karma Hack!

but when try to find a user by name at Admin CP

It says (Look at the Attachment)

Help! anyone can make it working on VBB2.0.1
Really need this great hack!!

THX :p

SaintDog 02-08-2002 10:47 PM

I do not believe it will work with any of the 2.0.x version of vBulletin (sorry to say), although I can not confirm this, I would say it will only work with vBulletin 2.2.x.

certify 02-09-2002 02:02 AM

As for the karma to appear in postbit template and other templates I have to make some changes in the code but you guys have to wait until Feb 18 2002 as I will be taking sometime off for holiday.

certify 02-09-2002 02:03 AM

I have only tested karma v1.0 in vb 2.2.2

SaintDog 02-09-2002 02:08 AM

Sounds good to me - how much needs to be edited? I could probably modify it if I knew what file.

Thanks again for a great hack, all that is really left would be maybe some images like OverGrows? :) (where it adds images according to the karma you have).....Maybe for the next release?

certify 02-09-2002 02:52 AM

You have to take a look kpoints.php and install_points.php

I have not seem OverGrows hack, what images?

SaintDog 02-09-2002 02:57 AM

Well at this time he does not have it up as he upgraded from 1.1.6 to 2.2.1 - BIG upgrade :).

Anyway, his went according to how much karma you had. Let's say you have 20 Karma points, you would have 1 green dot under your name in all your posts (the display of the green dots looks like the stars hack).

Such as this

Username
Administrator
* * * * * <-----Karma Dots

Avatar Here

Location: USA
ect...

Something to that effect.

MarkB 02-09-2002 03:00 AM

This is just what I was after! I installed it locally and it works great -- will put it on my online board this weekend :)

certify 02-09-2002 03:12 AM

Ok, Like the stars hack. I get it.

I'll add that in my to do list. :)

SaintDog 02-09-2002 03:23 AM

Cool thanks, I would love to see it like the way I described, of course the admin would need to be able to set the amount of points it required to hit the next "Dot" of karma just like the stars hack.

Thanks for the quick response!

SaintDog

Could u make this hack working on VBB2.0.1

many thanks!

:)

certify 02-09-2002 06:33 AM

Most likely no, I don't have the time. Why not upgrade to 2.2.2 since v2.0.1 contain security issues.

squawell 02-09-2002 02:47 PM

If you are trying to install it on "localhost" such as on your home computer, it probably will not work. I think one person got it to work but I have installed and compiled Apache, PHP, MySQL, Perl, ect on my computer and it will not install on my home computer.

I had to install it on my actual server on the internet, so you may be one of the ones that have to do that also.

If you are not trying to install it on "localhost" on your computer, then I am not sure what could be the problem right off, everyone else seems to have it working (I think) :)

MarkB 02-09-2002 09:25 PM

To install it on your local machine, replace action=$script with action=install_point.php in the install file.

For some reason, when submitting the form, it tries to use /php/php.exe instead of install_point.php.

Sorry if this isn't clear enough, I just woke up :D

squawell 02-10-2002 02:49 AM

TO SaintDog:

i install it on my website and still can't work so i want the txt file

to do by hand!!

TO MarkB:

thankz buddy~~it work very well!!:D:D:D

THanks both of u~~:D:D:D

One thing you may want to look at is the ability for users to give Karma and comments based on posts as the Overgrow hack does. This would make the feature fun for the users and they would have the ability to apply negative/positive Karma with comments.

I agree with that fully :)

Bane 02-11-2002 08:49 AM

Not to seem overcritical but what exactly does this hack have to do with Karma at all? This is a very nice point system but I'm not really understanding where it is a Karma system.

When I think Karma I think Postive awards for Positive things, Negative awards for negative things? This is just points per post and reply etc.. There is no interaction with the rest of the community above this.

I was actually quite excited when I saw this, however it's not at all what I was expecting, perhaps I am missing something (I hope so) But where (other than the title) is karma involved here?

I would like to point out its not that I dont like the hack, I'm actually quite taken with it. Just think the name is very misleading.

Guichi 02-11-2002 10:55 AM

luckily for us
1. the hack is free unlike overgrows
2. the author seems to be very opened-minded about adding features that members want

i think this this a great start towards an exellent freeware karma hack. Thanks certify for a great hack, im going to install it either today or tommorow.

also, how about an auto-ban feature like the old UBB ones, this you can set the amount of negative karma so that the person is automatically banned for ex: -5 karma points.

pgowder 02-11-2002 01:33 PM

Is there a way for another user to see the karma of everyone else??

SaintDog 02-11-2002 02:32 PM

I would have to agree with Bane, although it is a nice hack, the name is a little misleading since almost everyone (even if they have not used it personally on their board) is acustom to Overgrow's hack, such as the look & feel of it.

Certify does seem open minded about the hack, so I would hope he will try to replicate the hack that Overgrow has produced, or have something close :).

pgowder: At this time, no, other users can not view other users karma. I as well as some others have mentioned it should be included in the postbit template, which would allow others to view it, but at this time, only you can view it.

cdcopyworld 02-12-2002 08:25 AM

Hi. nice hack

i was wondering if its possible just to have the points system to work in one forum and not all of them?

thanks

Does it not display in profile/memberlist?

certify 02-12-2002 01:47 PM

Ok...Ok..... gees.. :D

I will work on those features next week :
  • Ability for users to give Karma and comments based on posts
  • Auto-ban feature

No, but it will be just wait for next week release.

SaintDog 02-12-2002 09:52 PM

Don't forget the images, I think, imo, images such as those that Overgrow was using better represents the karma, more than points do.

If you can, images based on the amount of karma you have would be nice (admin should be able to edit this in the admin cp such as that in the stars hack).

certify 02-13-2002 08:38 AM

Yes that is also in my todo list.

intellected 02-15-2002 01:50 PM

Excellent hack!

If karma exists in real life, you sure did gain a lot of it by creating (and developing) this hack.

Don't pay too much attention the the "misleading name" posts - I'm quite sure you will make this hack much better than overgrows ever was.

Kudos to you, sir!

intellected 02-15-2002 01:53 PM

Oh, and methinks that it would be a very good idea to be able to turn off this system in certain forums. For instance, I don't want people to give karma in the "Religious and Political discussion" forums.

For those of you who blame him for asking too many details, indirect spam blah blah... note that certify uses oscommerce out-of-the-box script, not his intention to ask too much details like that. Playing around with oscommerce script and you will know what I meant. Besides, eventhough it's annoying, but just put fake address and that's it.

certify, thanks for great hack, and disregard username John on your site since can download it here.

certify 02-16-2002 12:07 PM

Thanks, we will try to do whatever overgrows has done. What feature is in his karma hack anyway, besides the one the is in my to do list?

intellected, good idea for "turning off the karma for certain forums". But this had to be on the next next release v1.2. :)

SaintDog 02-16-2002 09:17 PM

I may have missed it but do you plan to include the ability for users to leave good/bad comments on users? That is a big part of the Karma hack, allowing users to leave comments on them.

Freddie Bingham 02-16-2002 09:55 PM

Did I mention that Overgrow donated his Karma to vb3?

talon3dhq 02-16-2002 10:26 PM

Um, no...you forgot to mention that...

Wow. Overgrow wins!

Anyway, in that case, I have a (somewhat offtopic) suggestion for the future implementation of karma in vb3:

Option to replace thread rating with average karma
This is a very simple, but very useful, modification. Essentially, instead of using thread ratings, the script calculates the average karma per post in the thread, and displays that instead of rating.

A bit more smooth than using both karma and thread ratings at the same time.
