This does not look right unless you have the same number of forums in each category.

OldSchoolDSL 12-09-2011 12:08 AM

Request

It would be nice to be able to pick which themes this would apply to.... Just a thought

Sforums 12-09-2011 05:41 AM

Tested on 4.1.0 pl2
Only left column appears, right is totally blank. I m using custom skin btw.

RellecT, can you look into this?

Second, can you give as a posibility to chose what categories to use? I really don't want entire forum page split in 2 columns.

Kraxell 12-09-2011 08:25 AM

I test it now but it dont works very good for costums themes and alot of subforums. Iam sad :(

thedarkroom 12-09-2011 08:34 AM

doesnt work in my forum :( http://www.megaportes.com/foro/foro.php it looks like this:

http://snpr.cm/JPlW23.png and this http://snpr.cm/3taaGO.png T_T running on vb 4.1.8

You can reorder the categories so categories with same number of forums will be side by side.
Currently I have no other solution..
If I will have other idea I will implement it in the next versions.

I can look into this, but I need you to send me a link to your forum so I can check what cause to the problem.

About the posibility to chose what categories to use,
It's complicated because the categories are arranged in LI lists..
so it a problem to split some of the categories.
I'm still trying find a solution for this..

Just incase any one has not got this to work you need to make sure you have a the main forum of each section set 'Act as Forum ' as NO.

This will then make the 2 columns on the main page.

I had all my forums and sub forums set as Act as Forum so did not show up untill i just added main forum headers for each section in my forum

Yes which means this is how it looks from a top level down perspective:

- Main Category (One single category of forums)
-- Forum within ^ the Main Category
--- Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.
--- Another Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.

- Second Category (This would be separate, normally below the one above depending on how you have them "ordered" in the admincp. In the case of this modification if you have it setup properly i.e. this was in fact a category it will now try to place this directly beside the other category listed above but each will have it's own "wrapper" per say.)
-- Forum within ^ the Second Category
--- Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.
--- Another Sub-forum ^ inside of the forum above only.

One issue I am noticing with this update, is that the forum descriptions, some of them are underneath the RSS logo image.

If you see my forums http://forums.millenniumcapitalcorp.com, you can see what I mean.

Yes I see what you mean.
this bug caused not by the mod, but from the way vb have built the category templates.
This mod just split them to two categories, it does not make changes in the templates..

anyway, I already work on a fix for that..
But it can take some time because I am quite busy these days.

Pirate45 12-11-2011 08:47 PM

There's a lot that I like about this but some categories on my site have so many different number of forums that it causes a lot of blank space. Uninstalled for now because of that but this is a good idea and something I like as far as the idea of shortening the index page.

thedarkroom 12-12-2011 02:23 AM

installed version 1.4 on my forum but still doesnt work -.-

4.1.2
Best viewed in firefox > http://animeappeal.com/forum.php?styleid=70

I LIKE IT!!!

setishock 12-13-2011 11:39 PM

Now if some one would tackle pulling this trick off on the forumdisplay page. That's the thread list page for those that don't know.
2 or even 3 columns on that would make going though the list a lot quicker. Hint hint...

usuyusu 12-15-2011 06:41 PM

I like it, but it does not work for me.

vBSuite 4.1.8, vBAdvanced 4.1.2 and vBSeo 3.6.0

Any idea?

In the next version I'll change the way I split the categories..
currently I use in a css trick to do that, As I see it doesn't work in some cases..
I've tried fix it but it still not work in some cases..
I have to think of a new way to do that.

It works on all my themes :)

But I wish there was some way to close in the gap (see screen shot)

For now I suggest to reorganize the categories, and set side by side categories which have the same amount of forums..
I'm working on better solution but it will take time..

Thank you for your reply, RellecT :)

I know developers here often are under appreciated for the hard work they put into their modifications and I just wanted to thank you for your willingness to improve on this.

Happy Holidays

Good work, but disabling specific forums feature didn't work for me, that's why I disabled the hack for now. What can be the reason?

I use 4.1.7 btw.

The option is for disable in specific styles/skins, not in specific forums.
if it doesn't work for you, send me a URL to your forum, I'll check it.

Sorry, my mistake, I wanted to say style of course.

My forum version is 4.1.9 now and it's still same, Forum URL sent via pm.

zeus_r6 12-31-2011 03:55 PM

very cool...may install this one

Speedy131 12-31-2011 04:37 PM

would be cool if it could make 2 columns of forums inside each category

so keeping the category 100%, but list the forums in that category in two columns :)

RaSa 01-03-2012 11:29 AM

You should ask Lynne for a little Support:

Same issue here. I have installed it and marked it, it's a great mod, but if you could fix that it would be appreciated. For now I'll leave it up to our members to decide.

VBUsers 01-04-2012 07:53 AM

hope to see the future updates coming soon. Choosing the category instead of the whole forum is what i need.

Anyway, Lynne's guide is for split forums, not categories.

My best suggestion to avoid the problem for now is set change the order of the categories and set side by side categories which have the same or close number of forums. That will reduce the blank spaces.

I've been busy lately so I didn't have much time to continue the development of this mod but I already thought of a way to fix it.
I'll try to release update as soon as possible.

I want to thank all the users who suggested my mod for MOTM and for all users who actually voted, thanks :)

rellect 01-05-2012 07:04 PM

I just want let you know that in few days I will release a new version (1.5), change log:
  • optimization of the code
  • no more one column with 50% width - fixed completely
  • the hack works now with categories which act as forum
  • rss / subscribe icons no more overflow the text
  • due to the css changes, the new version doesn't support IE 7 and lower (the mod will automatically disabled in those versions) - will be fixed in next version
Maybe will be include in this version
  • option to disable the mod automatically in low resolutions
Unfortunately, the gap "bug" still not fixed.
As I suggest before, for now re-order the categories and set side by side categories which have similar amount of forums to avoid the gap.
I hope find a better solution.

About the the option choose which categories to split instead of all categories,
It will not be included in this version. I already start working on it, hope to finish soon and release it in the next version which will be 2.0 .

If you have a feature request, feel free to ask.

TheLastSuperman 01-05-2012 08:42 PM

Hmm maybe some should consider creating a blank forum per say or a Sponsor forum and simply use image code to show their ad or ad code from your software of choice? It can be a work around for a few that use ads I know and anyone else all you need to do is think... "What can I display there to rid our site of the gap yet will be helpful or beneficial at the same time?" it could be current products for example if you have a store, show a popular product such as a shirt, coffee mug or other heck whatever you can think of your all creative in different ways .

If users don't like the ads remind them they pay the bills in a nice way OR that there's plenty of software albeit add-ons for Firefox or other that can rid them of ads on all sites heck there's even a GreaseMonkey script that lets you hide all vBulletin signatures on any and every forum if you wish.

Just thought it might spark some ideas so brainstorm everyone!
