Hey bro, can the mod be changed to allow the first x number of posts to be seen versus justt he first one? I have not downloaded the mod yet, but would be willing to go to your site to do so if it can be set to allow another number of posts to show.

Personally, I don't have an issue going to your site, but if an update is released to a mod here, I get an email about it so I can grab the latest version. Not to beat a dead horse, but that is why I prefer to get mods here, but am not against getting them elsewhere as I have done so in the past many times.

Thanks for the time taken creating this mod. I am looking forward to implementing it on our boards.

Don''t lie now. You were the very first one to ask. And after you ,only another user asked about this as well and I was not rude. I simply told him that I wouldn''t upload it here. What is rude about that? Or when doesn''t care to your needs pronto then that is rude. Well, we got different definition about that.

and now for something different...:D, about the mod

I have always been led to believe that if Google indexes your site and adds the posts to their search, if a person clicks on a link in a Google search and get a "You can't see this" on your site then eventually Google will find out and black ban your site...I have heard this happening many times.

I use to use a "Guest first post only mod" on my 3.8 site without spider access and it hurt my Google ranking something chronic. Allowing spiders without allowing the post to be seen by a guest via a search engine link has been discussed many times at VBSEO and here on vb and every time it has resulted in "Don't Do It".

So can you advise why it would be different with this mod...thanks

That is a first I hear about google ban for such a thing. I am using this mod in several forums of my clients who use google adsense and none of them until now has been banned from google adsense.

The thing is that atm I am a little busy and don''t have much free time. But later on when I will have some more free time, I will look into this :)

In the meantime find this part at the mod file:

PHP Code:

!$post['isfirstshown'

And change it to:

PHP Code:

$post['postcount'] -

Replace 2 with whatever number you want. That number represents the number of first posts that will be shown to guests and hide the rest of them.

bah just change your user agent to
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)

BirdOPrey5 09-10-2010 02:30 PM

I hate to be the barer of bad news but what Wilfred1 said is completely correct- this is the definition of "cloaking" - that is sharing different info with google then you do with a regular visitor and it is 100% against Google's most sacred rule. If someone reports your site YOU WILL GET BANNED FROM GOOGLE- and you may never get back on, if you do it will take at least 1 year. There is no appeals process, there is no debate- when Google confirms cloaking you are removed... period... the end.., Honestly everyone would be using this if that wasn't the case. Imagine if you had to register on every site you ever found in google before seeing the info you wanted.

Ask a "SEO Expert" if you don't believe me but this is common knowledge on the 'net.
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...y?answer=66355
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...n&answer=35769

If anyone cares about Google I strongly urge them to read the links above, search for "Google Anti-Cloaking Policy" and stop using the updated version of this mod immediately. You can not show different content to googlebot then you do any other visitor.

So... I can use the 'Download now' version at the bottom of the first post.

but the 'updated one' that I'd have to join his site to download would get me in trouble with Google?

That's what it looks like to me... I'm sure you could use the other version too so long as you don't configure it for googlebot.

FYI- This is how I report sites that use 'cloaking' when I find them:
http://www.dailytechnologytips.com/2...to-google.html

And it's not google "ad sense" you have to worry about. no one gives a hoot what adsense sees- it's googlebot for searches- that is what will get you banned from google search listings. Adsense is not the issue.

Yes, it can be changed. But if you will need help with it please post at the mod thread at my forum as I support all my mods there.

sulasno 09-17-2010 11:58 PM

Should I tease my guests and unregistered users by showing them the first and third post only ? :-)

Well, that is up to you really.

BirdOPrey5 09-28-2010 12:24 PM

Hey I found this about experts-exchange.com, a site that appears to cloak content from Google but in fact it really doesn't:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/...175293ce&hl=en

There's a lot to read but basically it says Exoerts-Exchange puts up a message that makes it looks like you need to be a member to see the answers (posts) but in fact if you scroll down to the bottom of the page the answers are there. So maybe this mod could be adjusted so guests see a message saying they need to register to see posts but in fact still display posts well below that message as most people don't bother looking past such a message but this is still within Google's terms of service.

Also another thing experts-exchange does is only show these answers (posts) if you followed a link from google... if you follow a link (get referred) by any other site the answers (posts) don't display at all...

So if this mod could be changed to:
1) Show all posts if the referring site is Google...
and
2) Add a large obnoxious "You must register to see posts" message above all the additional posts to 'trick' people into registering...

I'm still not sure I agree with the theory behind tricking people into register to see content but at least you wouldn't be de-listed from Google.

can this mod be modified to include registered users with zero post count ?

thanks midnz

thompson 11-06-2010 09:44 AM

how is the registration effect ? more registrations ?

same google ranks as before ?

res6cue 11-30-2010 11:39 AM

This mod has the right idea, but unfortunately it's quite flawed in practice.

For starters, it doesn't seem to actually query the usergroup ID when deciding when to restrict post viewing, instead it seems to check whether or not the vB 'guest message' is being displayed. Ideally it would query the usergroup ID, this way viewing could be definitively restricted by either allowing or denying a list of valid usergroup IDs (i.e. deny the default ID 1 for Unregistered / Not Logged In)

Because it doesn't check the usergroup ID, you can easily bypass it by looking at the print view of the thread, or the archive view if enabled. Even the Threaded/Hybrid view gives you big chunks of the messages.

Hopefully these shortcomings can be addressed, otherwise they should be clearly noted in the description so no one has a false sense of security. As far as registering on your site for support, well it would be nice if your site were actually online so we could do just that.

*Uninstalled*

tried lurking into my forum and found mod working in 4.1.2 but first post of each thread in different pages are shown while the rest are hidden; is this by design ?

I did and I replied to you there as well :)

Stefan118 09-22-2011 12:47 PM

Would it be possible / easy to change it so that guests can see the first 2 or 3 posts...

I realy like this mod, but i think if a guest comes along to search for an answere, he would get more interested in the forum if he saw a few replies.
Most of the time the top 3 replies are questions about the issue in the post of the topic starter.

So my question is: could you (or I with your help) modify this mod in that way?

BCP Hung 09-22-2011 04:30 PM

That is why I never install mods from devs who are requiring a registration just to download and use a "free" mod.. I mean this is a Vbull mod site..Release it here.

Stefan118 05-29-2015 10:15 AM

Any news about updates?
Website referred to does not exist.

I have a problem that my forum is still completely visable in the printable version.
