Hi,

Just a word of caution of implementing Google Adsense for Mobile Content on an actual iPhone app - The Google license agreement stated that the usage of Adsense for Mobile Content should be limited to mobile web-site, not mobile application. There is a risk of Google banning your entire Adsense account if they found you are violating the agreement, although we haven't heard of any incident of it.

We strongly advise all the forum owners to evaluate this risk before attempting to inserting Adsense for Mobile Content Advertisement into any iPhone or Android native application.

Here you can find the Google Adsense for Mobile Content license agreement:
https://www.google.com/adsense/suppo...y?answer=71600

And more discussion related to this topic:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/...7baa6821&hl=en

This is the exact reason that at Tapatalk we have not yet ready of inserting this kind of banner into the app until we received more clarification from Google.

Good looking out (except for the product plug ;) ), it looks like a grey area right now. Forum Runner adheres to all of the:

* Only one AdSense for mobile ad unit may be displayed per mobile webpage.
* A "double" ad unit can only be placed on the bottom of the page, but may appear above the page's footer (e.g. navigational links, copyright messages, etc.).
* Google ads displayed on a publisher's mobile-compliant webpage may not be modified or obscured in any way.
* After a user click, display of the advertiser's landing page may not be interrupted or prevented in any way. For instance, publishers may not display their own interstitial pages before taking users to the advertiser's website.

Since the actual forum webpages that are indexed are HTML, and since the AdSense code is hosted from the forum's website, the crawler has no problem indexing and categorizing the website.

I will attempt to get more clarification from Google on this, but nowhere in the terms do I see "cannot be in an application".

ClemsonJeeper 05-04-2010 09:17 PM

New feature! Push notification time periods! Now, you can modify your push notification account to only send you notices during a specified period. So, if you don't care about getting notifications at 3AM that someone has sent you a PM, you can now specify when you want push notifications sent to you during the day.

To configure this, log in with your push notification credentials at http://www.forumrunner.net/?p=push and modify the settings.

Just wanting to clarify how this works...

We have our forum running on mobiles with a specifically designed mobile skin that allows us to place ad units and things like google analytics in the header and footer templates (that we can customise).

Can we do this with the forumrunner app?

hilaryl 05-04-2010 10:28 PM

More questions...

Our viewers are asking for the following features - are these available on forum runner:
  • view signatures & tickers
  • use/view smilies
  • see view post count
  • delete pms
thx

* Signatures - we can add support for that. Look for it in the next version.
* Tickers - What is a ticker? :)
* Smilies - We have a small technical hurdle to overcome but are almost there.
* Post count - On the threads, or in the profile?
* Delete PMs - You can do that now. Swipe to delete (or hit Edit and tap Delete)

Not currently, but if you send me a PM with how you would want this to work - we could add it in a future revision for you. It might be useful to other forum owners as well.

hilaryl 05-05-2010 03:36 AM

Will send you a PM about the customisations for header and footer

Hi,

Yes it is a grey area but we can't put innocent forum owners who are not aware of this risk and empower them to do it without knowing it can be potentially troublesome. The issue here is you are making a fake webpage with the some thread content inside with the web-based banner within your app. Google site made it clear that it has to be a "mobile site".

The issue here is Google regularly shut-down accounts that violate their agreement and has robot in place to check it. It can close the forum owners who are using this feature for no reason and there is no way for them to dispute it. A lot of forum owners are living on Google Adsense and a account shut-down can really take down their entire website with zero revenue stream.

Please think twice before you push out this feature. It's fine it is your own app and your own adsense account but not wise to step into Google grey area at the cost of other forum owner.

And google also defines a "mobile site" as being:

Mobile Webpage Markup Languages:

* wml (WAP 1.x.)
* xhtml (WAP 2.0)
* chtml (imode, etc.)
* html (high-end ad units only)

Which is exactly what the remote forum is based on. Like I said, I have contacted google and am awaiting a response. We do not wish to violate any of Google's ToS with Adsense. If it turns out that Google responds back with a negative answer, then the feature will be removed in leiu of another revenue generating method (embedded banners perhaps?)

Thanks again for the response. We appreciate all feedback here at Forum Runner.

Yes, this is correct. There is no real way to get around the forum being Closed because vBulletin intercepts this before any of our code is executed.

I'd recommend taking advantage of the "Publish Forum as Private" feature of the Forum Manager. It will keep your forum off "New Arrivals" and "Popular" until you are ready to come out of closed status.

ClemsonJeeper 05-13-2010 02:30 PM

I forgot to post this up here, if you are using push notifications, you can now configure what push notifications you want to receive (private message, subscription) as well as configure what time during the day you want these notifications sent to you.

So if you don't want to be notified at 3AM that someone posted in a thread you are subscribed to, you can now specify which hours you want notifications sent to you!

You can do this by logging into the Push Notification manager at:

http://www.forumrunner.net/?p=push

and look at the bottom of the page. The settings are there.

ClemsonJeeper 05-19-2010 03:37 PM

1.3.3 has been released:

* Fix issues with "Cyb - Advanced Permissions Based on Post Count" add-on and posting new threads/replies/private messages
* Fix issue with thumbnail display when gd/gd2 is not installed, but imagemagick is
* Fix issue with forums with threads that haven't been updated in a while not showing up
* Fix issue with polling for updates from Home Page updating your last login time
* Add support for different configurable Google AdSense locations

ClemsonJeeper 05-23-2010 06:30 PM

iPhone App Version 1.1.4 has been submitted to Apple with the following changes:

* Add support for making subforums Favorite - to use, simply drill down to the subforum you wish to make a favorite, hit the "Action" button in the upper right corner, and choose "Add to Favorites"
* Added "Help" tab for online help - this will be updated as questions come in.
* Fix various UI Issues
* Add setting "Show Thread Preview" which will allow you to disable thread previews and display more threads per page
* Fix issue with people who declined push notifications just getting a black screen on launch

So if say 10.000 of my users get this iPhone app, you will earn $1.900.00
How much will you pay to my board? Can any % flow back to the site and be used to support the site?

Or you could pay the $249 branding option per year which pays for the work that goes into the app. It gives your community better accessibility also so your community is benefiting from potentially more usage . I think that is payment enough ;)

You can see their branding option here : http://www.forumrunner.net/?p=branding

That's a fair option! Is there an option for forum owners to make money on a branded app?

Thanks.

Im not sure to be honest , best to ask ClemsonJeeper, although that would be an extremely good way to compensate for the yearly costs involved.

ClemsonJeeper 05-24-2010 04:14 PM

Currently, we have Google AdSense support which is a way that forum owners can generate revenue through the app using existing measures.

The branded app is a way for forum owners who don't want their users to have to pay 1.99$ to access their forum (along with all the other Forum Runner forums) to be able to have a custom free app for their users dedicated to their forum.

If you want to charge for your dedicated app, that is your choice, and we can discuss some sort of revenue sharing if you like - you would be the first forum to want a dedicated app that charges their users.

Shoot me a private message if you want to discuss this further!

Thanks for showing an interest in Forum Runner!

Lynk 05-25-2010 07:32 PM

Clemson, I just installed the app support on my site. The $2 for the app seemed like a reasonable fee, so I didn't even bother with installing the freebie on my phone. Gotta say that you've got a great start!

I posted a couple of comments on your own support forums. Please bring Social Group support. Everything else seems to be covered.

BTW, how much is the push service?

ClemsonJeeper 05-27-2010 12:21 AM

Version 1.3.5 has been released:

* Fix a few more issues with Arabic forums
* Fix image thumbnail generation issues on forums without libgd/libgd2 installed

Any plans for an iPad native app?

ClemsonJeeper 06-16-2010 07:52 PM

Version 1.3.6 has been released with the following fixes/enhancements:

* Fix a few more issues with internationalization
* Add support for in-app forum/thread linking (does not punt you to the internal browser when a user links a forum/thread in your forum)
* Fix issue with forum owners who link to another forum on their site using "Forum Manager->Forum Link"
* Fix issue with editing a post removes your thread subscription
* Fix issue with "Subscribed" badge showing incorrect values with forums not using databsae threadmarking

ClemsonJeeper 07-01-2010 02:42 PM

Version 1.3.7 has been released with the following fixes:

* Fix issue with replying to threads sometimes unsubscribing you from the thread
* Fix issue with push notification badge being incorrect in certain situations
* Add some fields for iPad support

ClemsonJeeper 07-01-2010 02:45 PM

The latest version of the client also supports the iPad natively!

ClemsonJeeper 07-15-2010 01:43 AM

Version 1.3.8 has been released which contains the fix:

* Fix issue with URLs posted via Forum Runner not being parsed/clickable

ClemsonJeeper 07-22-2010 04:33 PM

Just a FYI, we've decided not to charge for push notifications - ever.

So when you create a push notification account, ignore the expiration date. A future revision of the app will remove this altogether. :-)

ClemsonJeeper 07-24-2010 02:50 PM

Forum Runner client v1.2.1 was released yesterday with full iOS 4 multitasking support as well as multiquote support!

ClemsonJeeper 08-03-2010 05:40 PM

Version 1.3.9 of the add-on has been released with the following changes:

* Fix issue with some push notifications not being sent out for thread subscriptions
* Fix issue with ignored users showing up in Forum Runner threads
* Fix conflict with Cyb - Forum Rules add-on
* Add support for various moderation tasks through Forum Runner (open/close thread, move thread, delete posts, stick/unstick thread) for your moderators
* Add support for viewing and voting on polls through Forum Runner

combs 08-09-2010 03:27 PM

Just installed and dled the app. Anyway you can display the "What's New" button somewhere? So I can just view recent posts/threads instead of having to go through all the forums? or does that already exist and i'm missing it?
