Site name: GeekHack
URL: http://geekhack.org
Description: Computer keyboard enthusiasts community.
Reason for Nomination: #1 English-language computer keyboard community on the Internet. Great custom theme, close-knit community of folks from around the world, helpful wiki.

Elenna 04-28-2009 01:36 PM

Site Name: Grace of the Valar

URL: www.GraceoftheValar.com

Description: Web site for the Grace of the Valar LOTRO Kinship (guild) on the Landroval server (please do not register just to look around).

Most of the features (below) will not be visible to non-guild members, so I apologize. Just need to take my word on it. ;)

Reason for Nomination: Our site is heavily modified from a stock vB install. In addition to our hand-ported theme, we have a rotating header image, and have custom-coded some additions to existing add-ons (obviously unreleased) to automate much of our application process and daily activities (confirmation PMs for each step of the process, helpful reminder notices, etc).

Our member list has been edited to include graphical representation of a few fields, instead of text. The Postbit has been edited to include profile information, and a link to the person's other web site accounts (we allow multiple accounts so people can have multiple members in the guild).

We have also heavily modified the Event Attendance mod to allow for profile fields to display in RSVPs, which help for certain events with gear requirements. We have also added custom Calendar fields to allow the event poster to choose which of those profile fields are displayed in the event RSVPs.

We have also edited our calendar to allow unregistered or regular "Reigstered" accounts (accounts who have not been accepted into the guild) to view the events on the monthly calendar view, but they are unable to view the details of the event.

When viewing a member profile of someone who hasn't logged in for 14 days, a red alert is shown at the top of the page to alert you to that, so you don't attempt to contact someone who might be inactive.

We have also used the profile fields to create an "AFK" system. This way our members can denote when they plan to be away from the game (LOTRO) for a certain period of time. Setting those fields also displays an alert on their profile, and also changes their RSVPs to display their away status. Our event coordinators can then avoid putting inactive people in their events!

We have also themed our EQDKP install to match our web site, and have also modified EQDKP (with massive help) to use the EPGP system (relational DKP).

Our kinship (guild) also boasts some of the best community members around (but I might be biased). HUGE kudos to our members for a relaxing, mature, and professional environment, and for constantly remembering that it's just a game and we're all there to have fun!

Although I know that there are better sites out there than mine, I still would like to nominate mine.

Site Name: The Laclede Forum

URL: www.lacledeforum.com

Description: The Laclede Forum is a site, dedicated to users posting their concerns and applause for our community. People use the forum to stress their concern to the Mayor of our largest city, and in turn our Mayor posts a weekly update to our forum. User like to use our site to share their pictures, videos and blogs.

Reason for Nomination: I nomintated my site, because I would like to have a sense of accomplishment for my work. I know that I have a lot of modifications added from vbulletin.org, but I like the site, and so do my posters.

DobieGillis? 05-03-2009 02:34 PM

Site name: Cooluniverse

url: www.cooluniverse.net

Description: Cooluniverse is a forum dedicated to the Miserable Men radio show which is on Sirius satellite radio every Sunday on Howard 101, 7 PM EST. We are a comedy based forum which is currently locked in warfare thank's to Jaxel's brilliant Conquest game. Most of the users are comedians i.e. Al Rosenberg and Mark Byrnes, who appear on the show. We've just added one of VB.org's coders to our admin staff, Tipoboy, who has graciosuly given his time helping us design a new skin.

Reason for nomination: Albeit, we may not be the prettiest site, we do have a plethora of mods that are geared to entertain our users. We are currently open to new registrants, so no login info is needed. Come by and say Hi!

Site Name - Sin City Sportbikes

URL: http://scsportbikes.com

Description: Motorcycle rides and riders for the Las Vegas, Nevada region.

Reason for Nomination: Please take a moment to look at my site. I have spent a considerable amount of time giving vBulletin a unique, one of a kind, custom look in layout and colors. We have a large community of motorcycle riders in the Las Vegas area, and giving them a unique community to congregate and communicate on has allowed the site to grow and expand which has been beneficial to the area.

K2_02 05-05-2009 10:41 PM

Site Name: X-Runner Underground
URL: http://www.xr-underground.com

Description:
An online community of Toyota Tacoma X-Runner enthusiasts

Reason for Nomination: XRU, as it's passionately known as by our members, was launched with the intention of breaking the "auto forum" mold. We promote a non-bashing, non-flaming community for X-Runner enthusiasts (and others) to not only discuss and learn about the trucks, but also to meet other members. The website was also guaranteed to be 100% free, for all features, for all members - always.

We host two national events annually: X-Fest and X-Fest West. X-Fest will be holding it's third annual event this year and we anticipate a turnout of around 50 trucks.

All of the graphics have been designed from scratch with the exception of a couple remaining buttons and smilies. Each month the header completely changes as the XRU Staff nominates a new member to be the "Top Ride of the Month." I have also integrated custom modules on the vBa homepage as well as custom code that allows users to turn on and off certain parts of the website using PHP code and options in their user profiles.

Actual usage of the site in probably easily in the millions of users, but they don't require forum registration to download addons, so the forum stats don't reflect that.

Reason for Nonination: Wow (no pun intended) the artwork is fantasic, the interface is fantastic, the search and organization of World of Warcraft mods in amazing, the forum is well laid out and friendly. I can't think of a reason not to nominate this site. It's amazing.

Description: The forum for Blues Brothers Central, based on the Soul Food Cafe in the Blues Brothers Movie
Reason for Nomination: The forum has a heavily customized theme (created by myself), with original artwork/graphics. It completely fits in with the topic of the site ("The Blues Brothers"), and it's instantly recognizable by fans.

The forum uses vBSEO to boost loading speed, it gets a lot of traffic from Google searches looking for information from the movie. It's important that those people can get the information they need without being forced to register, or wait for a slow page covered in advertising to load.

It has customized icons for each forum, as well as a Games Arcade and Chatroom ("Bob's Country Bunker"). The forum is well moderated and maintained, and there has always been a great sense of community amongst the members.

The advertising is relatively low, and much of it only displays to unregistered members.

There's still plenty of work to be done, the main website is 95% rebuilt (from scratch) and will integrate much closer with the forum. The last 5 threads will be displayed on the homepage, and related threads will display on other pages throughout the site (ie Dan Aykroyd's page will show the last 5 threads in the Dan Aykroyd forum, and so on).

+1 cool site
