Why am I a jerk? Because I refuse to own a Mac?

I actually happen to like Windows and Switched from Macintoshes to a Windows Platform years ago. I got tired of not being able to swap hardware, find programs that I wanted or play a lot of games. I don't have an Apple store near me. The closest one is 60 miles away in Los Angeles which I avoid. Exactly one computer store in town sells Macs and they will only deal with you if your buying ten units or more.

Every single computer in the local schools are Windows-based PCs (thanks to Microsoft and Lockheed-Martin). My son is required to have a Windows-based PC for his homework. I could go on.

I, personally, know exactly one person who has a Mac as her personal computer. She is always having problems with it. I never have problems with my Vista computer. I never had problems with XP. Windows 98 and 95 were shaky but that isn't an issue these days.

please, population, consider this comment as a non-standard among Mac users... this is just a pathetic attack from someone without any idea what the word jerk means... neither elitist if i understand right...

Calling Jerk to one of the staff?

Hey! I have won infractions for less than that!

when I had a PC I had millions of problrms with them. Vista is just a failure operating system. XP was good but the problems I had were stupid.

So now I have a mac I have not got in to any problems so far...

Why do threads like these always turn into debates on which is better? Can't it just be put down to personal preference?

nexialys 12-28-2008 02:57 PM

personal preferences are related to the better... someone told me to stop starting debates... close the thread if you are not happy...(i talk about the moderator side of view here, not you personally) when people compare what they have and what they don't it is ALWAYS a comparaison... not difficult to understand the statement.

though, i gave facts on why i personally prefer a Mac vs Windows... some are just "i heard that"... this is not related to the topic... as the starter asked YOU... not "others"... this is when the point is not made and where people are going off-topic just to say their word...

though, a community lounge have its rage of debates, usually they are locked down because of some insults... this thread did not go there yet

King Kovifor 12-28-2008 03:09 PM

Friendly debate is fine. Personally, I am a Mac user. I despise windows only because I have real experience with it at school and -- trust me on this one -- any body would hate it. Can't do anything and half the operating system is locked and it's just a pain in the ass.

nexialys 12-28-2008 03:24 PM

how can you despise Windows that much ?!...

[high]* nexialys like to read about your story... ;)[/high]

oh, and if i remember right, there was never a horror film with a Mac involved... a lot of Maniac Computers were run the nix way, or like Collossus, driven by DOS... killed millions. lol the only Mac based adventure i know about is an old version of Flubber... :)

TheLastSuperman 12-28-2008 03:47 PM

PC IMO and what I use but like I said... IMO ;)

Hatred philosophies?

besides it's easily for Mac users to have 'pains in the ass' since they love sooo much their mac that spend more hours seated :D

Michael, you can stop searching on youtube for the PC/Mac ads... they are all in HD on Apple.com

and yes, i would sit 3 times more time on my chair if i own a PC -- always trying to figure out how to debug it...

Are you comparing laptops or desktops, or both? If laptops are included, can I ask where you're finding these prices? Just curious since I recently got a new Dell XSP laptop, and my girlfriend got a Macbook Pro. Similar specs, though mine has a LED display, HDMI port, fingerprint reader, and memory card reader. I think she has 1 more USB port than I do. Mine was roughly 60% the cost of hers.

smacklan 12-28-2008 05:13 PM

I own both but prefer my iMac over anything PC wise I've ever owned or built...yes, I've crossed over to the dark side never to return lol.

for the gadgets, sure you pay less, but are they useful ?!... fingerprint reader ?!... NASA player ? just as comparaison, i just did the work, and you are right, the Mac is like 10% higher in price... here is my exercice:
compare Dell XPS M1330 with a MacBook:

13 inches
Official OS OS-X 10.5 vs Vista Ultimate -- we compare full OS here
RAM: 4Gb (Mac is 1066mhz DDR3, Dell is lower, at 667Mhz DDR2)
HD: 128Gb solid-state
Wireless: 802.11a/g both

Mac: 2250$
Dell: 2040$

... for the difference of price, i would consider the RAM de-valuation of DDR2 used by Dell to make a choice of performance.
though that did not contain the Windows Vista license i have to buy with my Mac if i want to use Vista on it -- 250$ more... way more costly than a XPS like you say...

GSeybold 12-28-2008 05:46 PM

Amen Sister.

I just really want to know which one breaks down less and preference, nothing in between.

actually, the one which breaks less do not depend on the OS you use but on the company you rely on... Dell, Hewlett Packard and some others have great support, so they can help you when your computer break... if you buy your PC at Walmart, good luck... if you buy your Mac at Walmart, even gooder luck... lol

if you have an unballanced power source, even for a PC or a Mac, you will have problems with your powersupply in your computer and that may lead to power surges, destruction of your circuits, motherboard etc, overheating, blah blah... there is no difference between a PC and a Mac on that part... if the environment of your computer is a risk, the life of the machine is in danger.

Apple had for a long time a monopole that was absurd... no reseller, you had to buy your computer in one of the 500 Apple Store on the globe... now they resell, like at FutureShop and BestBuy, so you can check there.. .but there is no change in prices... a PC can be sold in a wide variety of prices and models... a Mac have one model of each, same price around the globe -- like a BigMac.

Guarantees and support are comparable between big companies... but do not buy your computer in a small unrelated shop or you may loose these guarantees... a custom PC?!... anytime at big companies like Dell etc... for a Mac, forget it... but you can do it on your own.

You can build much better for less if you check their deals page and go from there. They also offer 20% coupons on the XPS quite frequently, so it would be closer to $1,600 for the Dell. ;)

nexialys 12-28-2008 10:03 PM

sure, deals... everybody get deals... btw, these deals do not represent a single thing regarding which is better fit for you... once you have the computer paid and on your desk, do you prefer the design of the Mac OS, or the Vista one ?!

i like the new Vista... but the more you add to the desktop, like transparent navs and animated backgrounds, the slower is your computer even when these details are not displayed.

I can stand windows most of the time when it's NOT a school computer. I am just not a complete fan -- I have grown against it from school. I actually help people fix their Windows machines....

KevinL 12-29-2008 02:45 AM

They used to have MACs/apples at my school when I was younger. Don't ever remember seeing a windows box except for maybe a teachers computer...and even then I don't think they had them.

Most of the local schools had Apple II's until about 2000 when Microsoft (through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) and Lockheed-Martin came in and donated 7,000 Windows NT machines to the local school districts. They also set up a purchase program where every teacher qualified to purchase a new laptop every year for about 1/3rd of the retail price. Now the local schools get about 1000 machines a year to replace old and worn out machines.

Kinneas 12-29-2008 12:45 PM

I recently replaced my desktop PC with a Mac. But I still have a Windows (XP) laptop and use Windows at work.

I have to say I prefer Macs so far though, OSX is very easy to get used to and a breath of fresh air after years of faffing around with Windows.

Oyobiia 12-30-2008 03:06 PM

Mac OS X is easy to use. Thats a good thing to go toward Mac

nexialys 12-30-2008 10:30 PM

Windows is also easy to use, if your goal is to have only one task... play games, or business, or design... once you do more than one task, you mess the engine and boom

Digital Jedi 12-30-2008 10:33 PM

I'm a "whatever's on sale".

iBardia 12-30-2008 10:44 PM

I have all PC's. I made my PC look like a Mac though.

Cost is still a pretty significant factor for most people, especially these days. That's why I asked about where you're getting your Macs from since you said they're about the same prices as Dell. When I can get a PC for less than 2/3 the cost of a Mac though, I'm going to choose the PC. Not that I have anything against Macs, other than their cost.
A lot of the Vista goodies are pretty pointless, which is why I've turned them off.

I know the LED screen I have uses less energy, puts out a better/brighter picture, and should last much longer. The media reader, while not a necessity, has come in handy more than once.
The fingerprint reader on the other hand has been pretty useless for me. Either I need to re-scan my prints, or it just doesn't like my fingers since I can never get it to work for me. Of course it reads my girlfriend's on the first try every time.

If MAC would support windows, i'd get one too.
But since it doesn't, the PC will be for me.

Hum, actually Mac support Windows... it's the opposite which is not right...

After you run Boot Camp, simply insert the Leopard DVD to install the necessary drivers. Everything you need to make your Mac work with Windows is right there.
Well, that's something new...
Right now i'm so broke that i can't even afford a PC.
But if i were to afford a MAC, i might use one, now that i know.

nexialys 01-02-2009 12:28 PM

actually you do not need to "run bootcamp"... if you have a seperate HD or a partition, simply restart using your Vista/XP install disk, format the HD you want to use, and tada... the Bootcamp driver can be installed once you have setup your Windows, so you insert Leopard CD and the installer will load itself. It is actually used to setup the Ethernet and Sound drivers, nothing else... or you have specific keyboards and some other things on your Mac. You can also restart from Windows to Leopard then...

hum, btw, what about the PC version of the Mac-OS, Darwin installed on a PC... never tested... someone played with it?... i know it's more like a Gnome or another Linux interface, so it do not render the usability of the Mac-OS, but i suppose it can be fun to play with.. :)

Mac or PC, I guess you can't blame either for that one. ;)

GSeybold 01-08-2009 12:00 AM

Stupid question I supposed but do most tech help companies such as Geek Squad know as much about Mac as they do about Windows? I really want to try a Mac but worried about the support issues as it relates to availability and ability since I'm such a computer knob. All of my company's tech support is currently hired out.

Thanks

Gabby

nexialys 01-08-2009 10:47 AM

Support for a Mac ?!... why ?!...

GeekSquad exists because Windows is full of bugs and non-senses... GeekSquad exists because most of the Windows users have problems with their configurations or setups... people who know about their PC will have no need of GeekSquad because they know how to install a HD and how to download its driver on the net. on a Mac, there is no driver -- so why ask for help if you install a HD on your Mac?!

a Mac do not need any driver that is not already provided in the OS
a Mac do not need specific configuration for each feature of the OS
a Mac do not have security levels across its OS, it is safe already
the reason why a Mac have a firewall is to prevent the PCs from its network to get visited
the reason why a Mac have an Anti-Virus is to prevent the PCs from its network to get infected

...other than that, you have nothing to setup when you install a Mac on your desktop... you can install most of the same softwares if there is no replacement within the OS (iWork replace MS Office -- and there is OpenOffice as a free solution)

You will have to take 2 or 3 hours to be aquinted to the new display and how the functions are set, but it's like changing a car from a manual to an automatic... :)

kiksilog 01-08-2009 10:51 AM

I'm a Mac since 2006 and I don't plan to back to using Windows anytime soon.
