Sorry but some of the other registration Mods I've tried mess up everything.

I realize this has been asked and answered, but I have to stick my two cents in here.

With NoSpam!, you get to do a question and an CAPTCHA at the same time. With default vB 3.7.x, you get one or the other, not both.

No, this is not reinventing the wheel. This is putting an extra wheel on your unicycle and making it a bike.

End rant.

I'd like to chime in as well... Before Jelsoft aka vBulletin copied the principle of NoSpam - there was CAPTCHA and nothing else - It wasn't a viable premise to keep Spammers from registering. Then NoSpam! was introduced = Simply brilliant modification that cut out 99.9% of all spam posts & registrations my Forum had once attracted...

So... Thanx again ANTIALIASIS - I had installed NoSpam on 3.6 series and it was absolutely fabulous. It's a pleasure to install again on 3.7 so thanx for sharing! Wonderful modification!

Jacquii.

Great hack,

Have you ever considered having an option for multiple questions on the registration page? ie the user has to get 3-5 questions right before being able to register?

Same here. One very simple question and I went down from an average of 8 to 14 spammers a day to nothing!

I believe that option is already there. However, two, three or more questions to register is a bit of over kill don't you think?! It's just there to deter human assisted bots and not meant to scare possible well intended registrants away! After all, it's not intended as a college entrance exam! :)

goforex 09-06-2008 04:54 AM

I've had this mod installed since it was released and it was working fine up until a few days ago. All of a sudden the old problem returned so it seems as if the spam bots have found their way around this mod!

rapidphim 09-06-2008 05:27 AM

how many queries are used in this mod? Thanks.

also, does it work on 3.7.3?

antialiasis 09-07-2008 12:51 PM

People with problems making the question and answer field appear on registration: Edit the template "register"; odds are if it doesn't work, it does not contain $human_verify in it. Put it in where you want the NoSpam! form to appear.

goforex: What are your questions like? It's impossible for a bot to be programmed to just get around this hack in general unless there is some way I'm not aware of for outside viewers to access your vBulletin options.

rapidphim: This hack does not add any queries. All the data it uses is accessed from the already-available $vbulletin->options array.

Don't forget, not every spammer is a bot. The amount of human spammers is ever growing, as bots find it harder to evade anti-spam technology like this.

@goforex: Try some harder or different questions - if you've kept them the same since you installed, then you're right, they probably have been broken. It doesn't take much to record all your questions, figure out the answers, then program a bot to automatically submit the correct answer. Keep changing them regularly - every month at least.

No method is foolproof, and as mentioned, all one has to do is register an account and send his bot o'spammin'. And there's no method to prevent that, other then being more relentless then the bot.

Thanks Guys.

I have updated my NoSpam! question and added an additional mod for preventing bot registrations.

Thanks heaps for this Mate!! Fingers crossed it totally stops these things! LOL :)

spinifex 09-12-2008 02:13 PM

can somebody please tell me how i enable this hack for registered members also? guests is no good for me since i disabled confirm email address in registration.

i really do not understand why this hack is only for guests? we all know bots register either manually or auto and become registered!? i think enabling no spam questions to your own preffered usergroups would be a really good idea.

i need to have a question or captcha image to stop bot posts upon newreply or similar.

please tell me how to do this easily,
thanks.

Unfortunately this hack is not for you. This hack's main purpose is to disable bots from registration and posting.
Because they cannot register, they are not members, cannot post(provided guest posting is disabled in your ACP).

Hi everyone, I have captcha, email verification and this hack and I still had a bogus registration - one of those ipod / Sony stuff sales. How are they getting through? could someone actually being registering manually? I doubt it.

Thoughts?

Frank

As a matter of fact, that's most likely what happened. A person will register and send his bot in to post, or he'll just post it himself. That's why no method is 100%, without barring registrations altogether. You just have to do the best with what you've got.

canadianrodder 09-17-2008 02:55 AM

Thanks for the opinion Jedi. It seems incredulous that, with the myriad of forums/boards out there, that, in this case, someone would choose a hot rod enthusiasts site. This isn't the first time...............Frank

Digital Jedi 09-17-2008 05:54 PM

I've had people/bots spam my TCG (Trading Card Games) site with adds for Viagra, online pharmacies and electronics. They just pick sites at random and hope someone, anyone will click an ad.

motoxer311 09-18-2008 02:08 PM

I'm getting the error below..

The following dependencies were not met:

1. This product is not compatible with version 3.7.0 Beta 3 of vBulletin. (Compatible starting with 3.7.0)

Digital Jedi 09-18-2008 02:56 PM

This was made for every version of 3.7 Gold and up. I'd recommend you get out of the Beta versions if you can.

Levi75 09-25-2008 10:27 AM

I'm not able to show the question of NoSpam!! I define one question but in the register form i don't see it in any place of it. Any help about this?

not sure on that the only thing I would think is that you pust the question in wrong? I just put this in and just copied the same question to the box and then changed some numbering etc.

barcena 10-02-2008 12:56 AM

I did installed the hack but I have doubts with the following:

Questions and answers for NoSpam!

HTML Code:

Enter questions and answers for NoSpam! in the format Question:answer1:answer2:answer3 etc. You may use any number of possible correct answers. Examples:

2 + 2 equals...:4:four
Please type "blubber" into the following box.:blubber

Enter one set of question and answer(s) in each line. Note that answers are not case sensitive, and that as colons are used to separate questions and answers, the questions/answers themselves must not contain colons.

Please type "blubber" into the following box.:blubber

I'm kind of slow, I need to type some questions in Spanish to be answered in Spanish, however when it comes to numbers is almost the same (ex. 3 + 3 = 6) however can somebody write for me what should i put on the box? and what is a blubber?, do I have to type the word blubber on the box where the questions goes? Don't underestand at all what I'm suppoused to write down on the box, sorry.

Nadeemjp 10-02-2008 01:08 AM

does this work with 3.7.3?
