Can you please tell us how we can help you guys? I think everyone is interested in this feature and also is willing to provide some help. The only problem is that we do not have any clue.

I thought that text messaging is a paid service. Does this cause any costs to the forum owner, the user who wants to sent a text message or the user who receives the text message?

Breathex 06-20-2008 10:40 PM

Adding companies from Turkey would be great;

Turkcell
Vodafone Turkey
Avea

Any chance for them?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I released this as I use it on my site(s) thinking it would be of use, but I'd like to further develop it to be more useful and more customizable.

I realize everybody wants more companies added, and I'm working on that! :) Please be patient while I get a list together. I also need to work on compatibility with other vBulletin versions (i.e. 3.7.0).

So, let me do some work on it, and feel free to post any further suggestions. :) Thanks!

TimberFloorAu 06-20-2008 11:46 PM

Mate judging by the response, this could be hottest mod of the year. I hope suitably qualified and technically adept ppl, assist with this. Wish you loads of luck

I thought that text messaging is a paid service. Does this cause any costs to the forum owner, the user who wants to sent a text message or the user who receives the text message?

The way this works is more or less explained in the description. Most cell phone companies have an email address for their subscribers where if you email it, it will turn the email into a text message and send it to their phone. For example, I have Alltel and their email for this is xxxxxxxxxx@message.alltel.com (xxx being your Alltel phone number). All that's happening here is that your forums are emailing the user at their cell phone company's email address like above, which in turn sends them a text message.

Most all cell phone companies provide this service for free, and the messages sent to your phone through the email address don't cost you anything or count toward your messages. And of course, it's free for your forums to send email. It usually makes it free for everybody, even people who don't have a text messaging plan. Some carriers are different, though... particularly smaller ones outside the U.S., and they may charge for those messages. That's a small chance, though.

How can you help? If you'd like to see a company added that isn't on the list yet, go to their website and do some research to see if they have an email address like the one example I gave above for their subscribers which will send a text message to their phone for free. Then, send me the company name, country of service, an example phone number (so I can program the script for the number's length) and the email address and I'll get it added.

I know you're working like a wild man to get 3.7.0 to work...

I can't wait to use this on my forum...I vote this Mod of the Year!

Excellent! Installed and works great.

How can I get the text "Send a text message to -user-" appear when clicking the username while viewing their post?

Thanks for a great mod!

Tim

I had meant to add this but forgot. I'll add it next release. :) The location of that menu when you click on the username should be in the postbit (or postbit_legacy depending on which you use) template.

bigtime 06-21-2008 01:22 AM

I tried this code in the postbit template but it didn't work:

Code:

<if condition="$userinfo['smscontact'] == '1' AND $userinfo['cellemail']">
                <tr><td class="vbmenu_option">
                <a href="sendmessage.php?$session[sessionurl]do=mailmember&amp;type=sms&amp;u=$prepared[userid]" rel="nofollow">
                <phrase 1="$prepared[username]">$vbphrase[send_message_via_sms_to_x]</phrase></a></td></tr>
        </if>

If it's not too much trouble, could you post the correct code?

Thanks,

Tim

I plan to update with the next release either tonight or tomorrow night at the latest. I'll include this change then. :) I'll have to look into it after getting vB 3.7.0 compatibility.

SALIMUS 06-21-2008 01:28 AM

robwoelich 06-21-2008 02:14 AM

I have to say, I'm quite excited about my plans for this. :D I've been working on the 3.7.0 compatibility and have thought of some other cool features to add along the way.

I'm working hard on getting the next release ready to go by tonight, but it may not be until tomorrow... just FYI. I do have to sleep before work in the morning. :p

SaltyOnionBalls 06-21-2008 05:01 AM

Are there future plans to be able to reply? Would be nice if it replied in a PM or something.

SaltyOnionBalls 06-21-2008 05:07 AM

Also the Edit SMS Options link is not showing up, the template was modified and I can clearly see the coding in the template.

Thank you for the detailed explaination! But I think I have to disappoint some of you.

I know that in Germany all companies charge the (email) text message receiver for this service. Moreover that person has to activate that kind of service, otherwise he will not receive anything. The price is very expensive, each text message costs its receiver at least 19 Cents. I don' t know of any plan which provides this for free or for a flat rate.

Therefore the only way to provide text message service is to pay for sms gateways and charge your forum users. This reduces the costs of an sms to 7 Cent or even lower. The only problem is that you would need to charge the text message sender, if you don' t want to loose money.

I think that most messages are not as important that anyone would be willing to spent money on it, but if you allow the sender to input any numbers, so that he can also text message non forum users, this might be of interest. But I really don' t know. There are prepaid sms providers, internet sms providers and discount mobile phone plans, which led to low short message prices in the past years. There are even flat sms plans, so either your forum sms rates would be more expensive or only slightly lower. Overall I think there are still many people who pay at least 15 Cent/sms, so that these people might be willing to pay, if your service works well and is easy to use, eg address book.

I saw that iogames had Germany listed. I think that most messages cannot be received, since 99% will have deactivated email text messages (it is deactivated by default and nowadays with all that spam it is not advisable to activate it). I could not test, because it is not possible to input the full mobile number.

Why are you so eager to implement 3.7.0 compatibility? I think that everyone who has updated from 3.6 to 3.7 should update vb to the latest version anyway.

succo 06-21-2008 07:20 AM

i found this site with many cel companies email addresses, including italians VODAFONE & TIM, but couldn't try that right now (i have neither simms)
even found that sending sms to (italian) TRE would work using cellnumber@tre.it but that needs to be confirmed too
still looking for some email address for WIND and, of course, the other 'new' cell companies, like coop, poste and auchan

would it be possible to add the first three companies? all of them work with 10 digits, as far as i can see on the web

have you tested it? runs?

jerx 06-21-2008 08:20 AM

So, I just tried to email myself to my sms email address. As expected I received an error message:

Quote:

Unfortunately your mail to 123@... couldn't be delivered because the addressee currently doesn't allow mail reception on their mobile phone.
You may send the mail again. However, a successful delivery requires that the addressee allows mail reception.

Yeah, I've seen that it's the case that way with certain companies. That's why I said it's free most of the time. Maybe I can find a way to get cheaper/free messages to those places eventually, without requiring signup for a bunch of crap.

I'm trying to get 3.7.0 to work because some people report they are unable to upgrade from it. However, on my test 3.7.0 forums, the current product installed just fine. I've changed the installation method but haven't released it, like I said, until I get some more work done with this first.

Boofo 06-21-2008 10:54 AM

I have unlimited messaging with my plan so it is no biggie to me.

Hurry! I can't wait ;-)

That issue is driving me NUTS.

Boofo 06-22-2008 07:53 AM

If you are using Princeton's GTUserCP - Enhanced USERCP Interface + USERCP Menu hack, you will have to manually add the link to the GTPM_USERCP_SHELL template as it replaces the GTPM_USERCP_SHELL template. Most likely, that is the cause of the links not showing in the USER CP. Also, you have to have Receive Email from Other Members checked for the links to show up to send the SMS messages.

robwoelich 06-22-2008 10:26 AM

Update released. Fixes a problem with the User CP Icons hack, but I see there's possibly another one with the GTUserCP so I'll take care of that next time. :) Thanks for pointing that out.

I spaced out the thing with the Receive Email from Other Members, I'll fix that next time as well. I figured the companies and the notes on the User CP issue were enough to at least get this working for everyone. How's that list for companies and countries? :p

Baldilocks 06-22-2008 10:53 AM

I see you have Cingular on the list, but Cingular is now AT&T. The settings still work, but is there anyway to change the phrase Cingular??

I didn't even think about it, to be honest. I had to type all those companies and emails myself. >.< It was lots of fun. But yeah, I'll get it changed next time. :) Sorry about that.

Baldilocks 06-22-2008 10:59 AM

No problem. :) At least it works now.

Boofo 06-22-2008 11:08 AM

I don't have TMS installed. Will the new version still work? Also, it might be good to have an option to disable the auto template replaces in case they don't work (skin issues, etc.) and we have to do manual edits.

Do we just overwrite for the new version or does it need top be a fresh install?

Boofo 06-22-2008 11:11 AM

I see that you only do the template edits with TMS now. I'll stay with ht old version then.

vietdjclub 06-22-2008 11:53 AM

I need some vietname companies as:

1. mobile phone
2. Viettel

it's possible?

thanks

chatzworld 06-22-2008 12:32 PM

when using a uk mobile number it will not work, i have to miss out the first 0 to fit the whole of the number into the system as UK mobile numbers have 11 numbers in them :(

And the message dose not send

Boofo 06-22-2008 12:33 PM

Did you remove USA AT&T (txt.att.net) from the new version? I didn't see it in there anywhere.

EDIT: Yes, it was removed. I can't use this as I use AT&T. Uninstalling.
