This can't be done with subscriptions and usergroups to work universally?

i'm not sure what you mean. if you mean remove permissions from the default registered group, create a new group with appropriate permissions and then use the subscriptions to promote them then, yes, it can be done that way. you just don't have the modified registration page and any other modifications such as forwarding them to the subscription page after registration is completed.

i've done about five people's sites and they all wanted something slightly different so it's custom for each person based on their needs.

i hope someone will release it for vb 4.0

once i get time i will try to make something that can be easily installed and doesn't require my assistance.
