actually, even if you do not agree with the terms and definitions, you can't do a thing about it... it is general usage in the code development and in the industry that Beta is for fixing development and RC is for bugs roundup... you would have to argue with the base of the internet to make it change...

In an ideal world all bugs are fixed after the last beta, and then a RC is released without bugs - that RC then goes Gold/RTM and Bob's your cousin's father. Of course in many cases there'll rightly be several RCs just to ensure that all bugs are indeed caught - but when a RC is released with no bugs (or just a couple of minor ones that can be fixed without having an impact elsewhere), then the code is ready to go Gold/RTM.

I know - I need a slap for being so pedantic, but it's happening more and more where RCs are treated like Betas, and final software is treated like RCs, and I think it's healthy just to stop and think about each part of the design/release cycle of software - to set expectations correctly and to back up programmers/coders when users/owners are expecting too much.

Oh, and happily been using 3.7b3 since its release without any issues - will be upgrading to 3.7b5 this weekend!

To clarify things, by saying serious bug finding stage I meant the RCs concentrate on finding the final bugs and that is their main propose, not adding or changing a lot of things anymore.

And the part about me being your cousin's father, I have apologized for that over and over and sent all the support payments. What else do you want? ;)

i just finished the upgrade, the vb upgrade took me about 10minutes, with prepared the changed templates on my localhost, 5 more minutes to write a simple permission plugin for the thread prefixes, after that 2 more hours to switch my site news system from the forum category, to the thread prefix system. 2K Threads moves, thx god it's over.

So its all good.

where is this "view conversation" link? Cant see anything at my visitor messages after the installation...do I have to activate something?

I am running version 3.6.8. Is there any way to install this in a different directory but use the same database to make sure it works first? I'm assuming no but wanted to ask.

you can make a backup of your site and set that up in a test sub-folder, change the db name and everything.

No you can not use the same database (unless you install twice with different table prefix). Installing 3.7 using your production database would upgrade all tables to their 3.7 version, leaving your 3.6.8 installation useless.

seems like the BETA's are running to 1000 :p

Would be good to have a stable full release soon rather than all these BETA's :D

I do understand that they are needed in order to release such a version, but 5??? we are having more? LOL Surely this could be compacted a little but nevermind, keep up the good work vb team!

nexialys 02-19-2008 08:20 PM

hum, actually, as this site is dedicated to development and coding, it is the worst place for the regular public to look at when they are stressed about releases...

if you do not like betas and alphas, do not visit this site... you'll be disapointed all day long

I didnt say I do not like betas or alphas for that matter ;) Plus im no regular public person nor stressed out about releases. Im happy with 3.6.8 actually LOL

I was merely saying that it feels as though we are having so many BETA versions for 3.7. For software I release for my business, I have a max of 3 bug permitting. Ive found developing more BETA versions often wastes more valuable time in releasing or getting closer to the actual full version. Sometimes its better to compact the amount but perfect each BETA before release of another.

I am running 3.6.8 with the latest version of photopost.
In looking at the new features of 3.7 with it's built in
photo gallery and customizable profile pages would it be
wise for me to phase out my photopost? I like photopost
but it's looking as though i may not need it after upgrade.

This is my question as well. I had an unsucceessful implementation of PhotoPost on one of my sites and I am interested to learn more about the photo album features in 3.7.

nexialys 02-27-2008 08:10 PM

there is no link between a album in 3.7 and photopost... the album in vBulletin is a personal list of pictures, not a album made public with a load of features...

Don't even think to replace photo post-gallery hacks with 3.7's album(s).
It has to be improved significantly.

cajunboy2208 02-29-2008 01:04 AM

I really like the new 3.7 features.
My mods are especially loving the delete posts as spam.

Why is vBorg still running 3.6.8?

I wouldnt test it if my forums were this big either. Imaging if vBorg went down due to a 3.7 but for a while

They wouldn't want to upgrade on every beta or RC version :)

the 3.7 profile album is just that - an album - not a gallery, and was not created to, nor was it ever meant to, replace any gallery add-on for vB. These are personal picture albums and will very likely not be given many more features. So if you're running photopost or vBPicgallery or any other gallery add-on and don't want to be without their features, keep 'em. ;)

I've been running TalkOhio on 3.7 since beta3, and just upgraded my designs site to beta5. No problems at all for me.

I understand that there will be a beta 6. Hopefully, it'll be out this coming week.

Ohiosweetheart 03-04-2008 10:40 AM

I didn't like it either, but can't think of another word I like better

sully02 03-06-2008 03:01 PM

Looks like Beta 6 is up and running on vB.com, so I'm guessing it'll be available to the masses real soon.

Shazz 03-06-2008 04:28 PM

A RC1 would be no surprise
