pheroman 11-23-2007 11:51 PM

Look nice

nokturno 11-24-2007 12:27 AM

I'm already waiting 3.7

gbml4u 11-24-2007 02:47 AM

so..Continues using 3.6.x with fully great mods and support or try this totally new version 3.7.x ?

I had the same question for myself when VBB updated 3.5.x to 3.6.x...

but Great news ;)

CarlitoBrigante 11-24-2007 03:38 AM

Terrific news! Scary for a developer, but great news indeed. They have added a lot of flashy features, but also a lot of truly necessary features that will make life of moderators and administrators much, much easier. Great job!

donnacha 11-24-2007 04:47 AM

Sorry, but could someone post a rough estimate of when 3.7 will be released?

I realize that this question will have been asked many times on other threads but I don't visit vb.org as often as I used to and don't have time to trawl through all the threads I've missed.

Any hints or guesstimates would be much appreciated.

As always: When it is ready

Please don't ask about release dates. Once they are known they will be announced at vBulletin.com

I realize that, when most of the people who hang out at this forum worship the VB team as gods, it must be hard for you to remember that, in the real world, it is just not acceptable to be that rude to paying customers. That sort of attitude is more appropriate to ego-fueled FOSS projects.

I specifically asked for a "rough estimate", "a hint", a "guesstimate" and, as such, it should be possible for someone to throw us something along the lines of "possibly in Spring" or whatever without feeling that they have written anything in stone.

It was a reasonably questions and I am sure I am not the only person wondering the same thing.

Again, sarcastic answers such as "when it is ready" do not make you appear intelligent, they make you appear rude.

Marco van Herwaarden 11-24-2007 05:43 AM

You might see it as sarcastic, but it is not. It is the most realistic answer i can give.

donnacha 11-24-2007 05:57 AM

Fair enough, cultural misunderstanding.

Kier has said there is no back end change but yes the ajax addons may need updating.

3.7.0 will be released before the new year or maybe just after depending on beta/rc stages :).

Me: My guess is this year is the beta/rc year. Stable will be out next year I would imagine.
Kier: No, sooner than that.

the plan is to upgrade vBulletin.com to run on vBulletin 3.7.0 on Monday (November 26th) and to let it run for a few days in order to get some feedback and bug reports before releasing the first public beta.
--------------------------------------------

I really like the look of 3.7.

My main gripe is that it really should be possible to let us have at least a very basic list of features about a month before the announcement.
Being cautious Ive been checking out every other social networking option there is zoints drupal socialengine madebymary ... if it exists Ive checked it. I felt I had to do that because I had no idea how much this vb3.7 would meet my needs so if it was inadequate I wanted to have a backup option ready to go.
So an announcement that said 3.7 was INTENDED to come in beta before December (there was an anticipation thread but the news was pretty vague)
and a list like Profile changes incl Gallery, Groups, Colour customising.
Not detail just headings.
This should be possible. We do need to be treated like adult partners, albeit junior partners in the project. It's not just the devs who have pressures on when and how. As admins we also have pressure of deadlines, demands from our users, needs to PLAN our work not just hang around like small kids or wartime rationing shops! waiting for the doors to open.
For example my work means I have a substantial window of slow time over the midwinter academic holidays. So one way or the other I need to get my social networking choice set up then. If I'd had definite notice that the AIM was to get the beta out by end of November I could have cut a lot of stress and hours of checking other options as backups in case vb3.7 didn't have any of the stuff I need, or wasn't arriving till January..

---------------------------------------------------------

Like others I'm nervous how much 3.7 is going to smash my custom templates. But it's worth it. Would MUCH rather be doing the customisation over the quiet period of the xmas period so I hope the release will be just before xmas. Once we get into January my frontline work will get busy and hard to find time for admin jobs.

I'm particularly pleased with the social networking stuff. User changing colours is great and the gallery looks good.
We need a hack to put descriptions on gallery pics?

Would have been nice to have an admin GUI to move the profile blocks up /down. It'll mean experimentally moving code blocks and prob getting it wrong so a block disappears and I'm up half the night going back to default and redoing it. <sigh> Any chance of a hack there?

I have written to the person who does Profile tags (linked keywords in interests, so you can click link to see who has same interest) to alert them we'll need a 3.7 compatibility check.

Finally what about blogs? It makes sense for user blogs to link off their profile. So a block that admin can enable if they've installed blogs required.

From my research into other options:
---------------------------------------------
I was particularly disappointed with zoints. They call their thingy "local" but IT IS NOT. It 100% forces you to allow access to your community by all the mass of zoints members. And your members have forced access with no admin protected space no admin control over access TO zoints network.
For anyone handling vulnerable people, minors, a professional work project or an education one, this ws useless or high risk of inappropriate contact. Also new communities are at risk of members being bled off by the bigger more developed sub-communities on zoints. Zoints however are totally uninterested in these concerns. Even though they HAVE a truly local script they just withdrew from users a couple of months ago. All I got in repy to request for info and consideration was blah sorry no.
However if you are not handling any younger or vulnerable type members, and your project is established enough you feel you can compete with others similar (or you're really different!) and your members are not working in any way seriously on projects so outsiders crashing in not a problem, then zoints is worth a look.
I just object to it being called "zoints local" when it's a completely open network. It also requires going into the real detail of the demo before you realise what you'd get. There's no warning in the features blurb to tell you.

Otherwise for anyone not wanting to use 3.7 for social networking for some reason I found

MadeByMary mod very good
features and lots of them, support fast and good and friendly (this is the best alternative) No custom colours!;
socialengine good features, fast response for support;
dolphin good features but slightly slow response to query re vb integration which is coming in the next month I think. As long as the bridging works well the features are good.

tschai 11-24-2007 10:27 AM

Look promissing: a lot of features, which are now out of the box, although many of them were in a form available as a hack/mod.

Therefore very little features, which make you go 'WOW' as a regular vb.org visitor...

There it will not be usefull for me to ugrade...mainly because I expect a lot of problems, doing so.

But nice work indeed.
And I support teh fact that it will be released when it it's finsihed...instad of many patches...

I like to see a 'Web 2.0'-ish or another new/original skin as default by now...

PS: Will the YUI/Ajax implementation fix the non-working AjAx-features with non-deault languages?

Fraik 11-24-2007 11:54 AM

This is looking nice. A social network solution is something I would not normally take the trouble to install, but this is looking pretty neat! The anti-spam measures are also great - but Im still hoping for a report function for private messaging, spambots seem to have found out the PM is nice secretive way to send users crap.

The profile template still doesn't look very good :( Looks like this will be a challenge to improve upon. My custom templates are mostly limited to the postbit, forumhome and profile templates. Shouldn't be too much trouble to update :)

I'm hoping this will be available in stable release before Christmas, as I would hate to take down my boards even for a few hours during the holidays.

From what I have seen each of the Right Column blocks is a single line/variable in the MEMBERINFO template. There is also a generous amount of template hooks available for custom blocks.

Not every installation with a non-default language has problems with the AJAX features. Those that do would have to provide feedback during the testing phase.

sundarmobiles 11-24-2007 01:20 PM

hmm lots of features waiting for this one...................

TosaInu 11-24-2007 03:11 PM

Hello,

3.7 looks nice indeed.

We are using the thread-prefixes hack and lots of topics are set. Will they be lost when upgrading to 3.7, do we need to rename tables in the database or will 3.7 use what's already there?

Rajdeep 11-24-2007 03:45 PM

Plz also Add- Most Recent Posts at bottom, just like in SMF...

It helps in seeing the recent post easily and finding the spamed post...

It would be great, if u add it

Thanks

habbworpe 11-24-2007 03:48 PM

This update looks awesome.

csavern 11-24-2007 03:56 PM

One problem IT IS TAKING TO LONG

I seen this post yesterday seems like i been waiting a week already

RvG2 11-24-2007 03:59 PM

vb.org coders have a new toy to play with! :)

I am sure whatever they finds lacking on 3.7 they will definitely fill up the missing ones.

We won't know the answer to that until its released. Here at vbulletin.org, we are very much interested in the answer as we use the prefix modification here, but I'm afraid even we do not get to find out before anyone else.

nexialys 11-24-2007 04:46 PM

Hum, actually, about the prefixes... who released the first version and who released the second one will help to know if we can create a import for it too... insights!

oh, btw, i read in the other page.. someone ask for a request... TOOOOOOO BAAAAAD... this is not a thread for requests.. you had the last year to ask requests for this script.. go to the official website for further support.

Endurer 11-24-2007 05:00 PM

It's far more feature rich than I expected it to be. Great job guys.

AmbitiousOne 11-25-2007 03:41 AM

Are we going to have to upgrade to 3.7 to ensure that our forums are not hackable ? or vulnerable to some vulnerability? Particularly RSS feed which for some reason has been the reason for many 3.6.x updates.

I rather not upgrade right now.

TvForce 11-25-2007 03:47 AM

awesome cant wait :D any beta we can use now ?

You'd think since it's a popular mod. Personally it would have been nice if they had adopted your Who's Read a Thread. Maybe in the 4.0 release they'll add more functionality to the Who's Online or Statistics code.

Tinh.Nhi 11-25-2007 06:59 AM

exellent
