How can we make snowflakes bigger?

HUMMERh3 12-03-2006 11:38 PM

Yes I would like to know how to make more flakes...I tried adjusting the variable up to 8000 but didn't notice any difference in the number of flakes please help...I told my members that there was going to be a big snow storm at our forums :)
Quote:

var num = 40; //Number of flakes
var timer = 30; //setTimeout speed. Varies on different comps

thpoul 12-04-2006 07:57 PM

Quote:

if (d.documentElement.style &&
typeof d.documentElement.style.MozOpacity == "string")
num = 12;
Change that 12 into what you want to have more flakes....

Quote:

for (i = 0; i < num; i++){
sfs[i] = Math.round(1 + Math.random() * 1);
() * 3 to have some thicker flakes

BUT....this will make your site go REALLY slow so I don't suggest it..

extremebetas 12-04-2006 08:23 PM

Not if you have fast server LOL

TIA

put the snow.js in the folder where your forums are installed

most likely "/forums" or "/forum"

I don't see how this hack could be causing your problem...

i think its something in the movement of the snow coz when the snow changes its diraction from right to left this thing happens

thpoul 12-06-2006 10:49 AM

The problem is at the X direction of the snow since it keeps on changing every (30 by default) seconds.

It does the same thing to me too cause I have pasted it above the header but it doesn't bother me at all :p

so can't we fix the problem?
any java scripter here?

Betablocker 12-06-2006 06:05 PM

Problem i have found is....

I run StonyArc's vbgooglemap Hotspot Edtion and when you add this script then all but 3 of the flags (hotspots) dissapear and if you stay with either firefox or ie open at the hotspot page then the cpu process will be 99%

Take it off then all is well

Other than that works fine.

Any ideas?

vb 3.6.4
1.4 hotspot
CMPS v2.2.1

Does anyone know how to make it show on the vBadvanced CMPS portal?

Add to the "adv_portal" template under head. Make sure the file is in the right place too.

jndeakin 12-07-2006 12:25 PM

Hi Ernie,
just tried looking at your site as given in the snow.js file (ie http://www.btinternet.com/~kurt.grigg/javascript ) All I got was a BT login screen. Have you moved it and forgotten to update your file?

Set it up today. Nicely seasonal :) Are you going to do another with falling Easter-Eggs next Spring? lol

wobbly 12-08-2006 10:12 AM

Great stuff. However some users are complaining of CPU usage upto 100% when I have this script on my forums. Is thare anything I can do to reduce this as its actually interfering with them typing a post, for example: Missing characters out as they type.

For those with white background forums, you may wish to change this line:

+sfs[i]+'px;height:'+sfs[i]+'px;background-color:#ffffff;font-size:'+sfs[i]+'px"><\/div>');

TO

+sfs[i]+'px;height:'+sfs[i]+'px;background-color:#a9a9a9;font-size:'+sfs[i]+'px"><\/div>');

This makes the flakes visible yet not intrusive!

Great modification!

thanks this will look good with my holiday style

I tested the demo in Safari (for Mac) and it appears to work fine as well, FWIW.

Works just fine for me! Thanks

Wanted to make more snow, and made changes as such in the java script:

var num = 100; //Number of flakes
var timer = 30; //setTimeout speed. Varies on different comps

But nothing changed. Any suggestions as to get more flakes? Size is fine.
Thanks

I have a complete template that I'll be releasing in the next month with snowflakes on the header. It's not Java, it's actually an HTML marquee and is completely editable to make as much snow as you want.

Check back for it :D
