What you need to do is set the forum permissions for each forum for the Unregistered/Not Logged In usergroup as follows:

Can View Forum Yes
Can View Thread Content No
Can View Others' Threads Yes

vB can't tell who the guest is (whether or not they have posted in the forum before) and so all threads are by someone else. But they are still not allowed to view the content.

Hope that helps. :)

This hack isn't really good if you want your forums to get good SERPS. A spider has the same privileges as a guest :knockedout:

Just a quick question: Will this make the thread titles show up in the today's post to guest? Will this hack achieve this?

I currently have the vB default set to do this, but the threads are not showing up in the "today's post" shown to guest.

Thanks in advance

I read earlier that you were wondering how vBulletin has this feature installed as default. I looked into this and discovered that if you set the usergroup to view the forum and other's thread (set to yes) then set view thread content to (no) then it'll let guests view the thread titles without getting access to the content itself. As for the nice message, one way to fix that would be to look up phrases that contain a part of the default message, then changing that message to make it more pleasing to the eye.

But thanks for the hack anyway, although I learned it's not needed, if it wasn't for this hack, I wouldn't have thought about giving guests this option.

This is a simple but great hack- it's just what I needed to let guests know the forums weren't empty, and give them "teasers" to encourage registration! great job!!

Moya,

I had the same problem trying to get what I wanted to work. However I think I have found the way to achieve it through normal settings.

In the forum permissions for those usergroups that I want to be able to see the forum and the thread titles but NOT the thread content, what I have done is this:
- Set Can View Forum to Yes
- Set Can View Thread Content to No
- Set Can View Others' Threads to Yes

It's the last option there that changes the Thread Title from Private to the actual thread title on the forum home.

This DOES give the usergroup access to the forum. So they can see every thread in the forum, they just cannot see any of the content. Was this the same thing your mod does? If you are even more restrictive (i.e. can see Forum Name, but cannot enter Forum) then I may be very interested in your mod.

Took me awhile to find this again!

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
